Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Race and Other Sermons When his many friends heard that he was about to resign the See of Liverpool, they urged him to publish a volume of his sermons as a memorial of his sixty years' ministry. The Bishop kindly consented to do so, and invited me to make a selection from his mss. And to prepare the sermons for the press. I need hardly say that I willingly undertook the task as a labour of love for my aged Bishop. The selection I have made for publication sets forth the great doctrines of our F aith - Sin, Redemption, Regeneration, and Sanctifi cation. I have also added sermons which call attention to the Practical side of Christianity, and which especially emphasise the duties of the Christian life. The closing sermons proclaim the coming of our Lord; the Reward of His Saints; and the Rest of Heaven. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: ALTHOUGH the Bishop of Liverpool has published many books--Commentaries, Biographies, and Theological Dissertations--he has never published a volume of sermons. When his many friends heard that he was about to resign the See of Liverpool, they urged him to publish a volume of his sermons as a "memorial" of his sixty years' ministry. The Bishop kindly consented to do so, and invited me to make a selection from his MSS. and to prepare the sermons for the press. I need hardly say that I willingly undertook the task as a "labour of love" for my aged Bishop. I have also added sermons which call attention to the Practical side of Christianity, and which especially emphasise the "Duties" of the Christian life. The closing sermons proclaim the coming of our Lord; the Reward of His Saints; and the Rest of Heaven.Friends, who knew of the preparation of these sermons for the press, have been praying that the "message of God" which they contain may bring blessing to many thousands. In the sure and certain hope that His Word will not return unto Him void I have prepared this volume of sermons by the first Bishop of Liverpool--and in this hope it is sent forth.T. J. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons, Vol. 2 of 2 And every man that Striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. The text is a comparison between the worldly combatant and the spiritual, - between the wrestler of this world and the wrestler with it, - between him that strives for the "mastery" over others, and him that strives for the "mastery" over himself, - between the contenders in the Olympic games and the contender in the Christian race. And it is an apt and fit comparison. Olympus in the heathen poets is commonly used for heaven; so the Olympic exercises may well be used to resemble those for heaven, and the heavenly crown likened to the Olympic garland, without any offence, though with all advantage. And it is as seasonable as fit. This holy time of Lent is a time of striving for the "mastery" with our corruptions, with our "corruptible" for God's "incorruptible;" a time of holy exercises upon the "corruptible " earth to obtain a crown "incorruptible" in the heavens. And it is somewhat more accommodate and easy to our natures, as much as temperance is than fasting, as partial abstinence from inordinacy and excess than abstaining altogether. I have felt that such a study will not only, at this day, have a fresh interest for us as devout scholars, but will bear in the truest way on the work of your Society. There has been, I may well say, no time in the history of our faith when we were abler than now to Open with all the lights of Older and newer learning this wonderful book of the Hebrew Revelation. It is in this domain that the keenest questions Of a critical age have been raised, and unbelief has sought to under mine the whole fabric. But in proportion as a Christian science has explored the record with fearless honesty, while it has given up many fancies of past interpreters, the supernatural truth has stood forth clearer and stronger. It is thus we will study it. As we pass in review this Divine history, we shall see it linked with the whole plan of God in the training of the race; we shall see its faith, its worship, its social movements pointing to Christ, the fullness of times; and in that central light we shall know our spiritual heritage, our perfect law of liberty. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... unless they fictitiously adopt the language they hear, they are painfully conscious that they know nothing of them as yet. They hear of a depression for sin which they certainly have never experienced--a joy in God, making His service and His house the gate of heaven; and they know that it is excessively irksome to them--a confidence, trust, and assurance, of which they know nothing--till they take for granted what has been told them, that they are not God's children. Taught that they are as yet of the world, they live as the world--they carry out their education, which has dealt with them as children of the devil, to be converted: and children of the devil they become. Of these two views, the last is by far the most certain to undermine Christianity in every Protestant country. The first at least assumes God's badge, an universal one; and in education is so far right, practically: only wrong in the decision of the question how the child was created a child of God. But the second assumes a false, partial, party-badge--election, views, feelings. No wonder that the children of such religionists proverbially turn out ill. III. We pass to the doctrine of the Bible and (I believe) of the Church. Christ came to reveal a Name--the Father. He abolished the exclusive "my," and He taught us to pray "our Father." He proclaimed God the Father--man the Son: revealed that the Son of Man is also the Son of God. Man--as man, God's child. He came to redeem the world from that ignorance of the relationship which had left them in heart aliens and unregenerate. Human nature, therefore, became, viewed in Christ, a holy thing and divine. The Revelation is a common humanity, sanctified in God. The appearance of the Son of God is the sanctification of the human...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Triumphant Certainties: And Other Sermons Then there is a further step to be taken, and that is that this sonship of God, which is the result of being born agam, Is mediated and received by us through our faith. Remember the prologue of John's gospel, where, as a great musician will hint all his subsequent themes in his overture, he gathers up in one all the main threads and points of his teaching. There he says, To as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God. Long years afterwards, when an old man in Ephesus, he writes down in this last chapter of his first epistle the same truth which he there set blazing in the forefront of his gospel when he says, in the first verse of this chapter, Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. On condition, then, of a man's faith in Jesus Christ, there is communicated to him a new life direct from God, kindred with the Divine, and which dwells in him, and works in him precisely in the measure of his personal faith. That is the first point that I desire to establish. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Message of Peace, and Other Christians Sermons The Song of the Angels was the first public preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Its advent had been announced privately to those who were elected to be its instrument, in dream and vision, in angelic salutation, in inspirations of the Holy Ghost. To Zacharias in the Temple, to Mary in the secret chamber, in the night watches to Joseph, in the joy of her unborn child to Elisabeth, the assurance of its approach had been given. It had been recognized and welcomed in words such as had never yet burst from the hearts of men, from human gladness, from human hope My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ and His Friends: A Series of Revival Sermons The sermons in this volume were delivered in Hanson Place M. E. Church, Brooklyn, N. Y., during the month of January, 1895, in a series of revival meetings. It will be noted that the texts and themes are all selected from St. John's Gospel. The themes were selected some months prior to the delivery of the discourses, and such time as could be spared from the regular work of my ministry was devoted to the work of outline, Scriptural study, and the gathering of illustrative material from all sources open to me. When the time arrived, after a few hours' study during the morning of the day in which the sermon was to be delivered, it was first dictated to a stenographer, though it was afterward in the evening preached without notes. The entire thirty-one sermons were thus at last forged and delivered during that earnest campaign. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ Our Life: Sermons The wisdom mentioned in our text does not relate to the extent of our knowledge, but to its kind. It is not an expansion of learning already gained, but attention to the sphere of life and conduct which is demanded. It is that wisdom of which the fear of the Lord is the beginning. It has its seat in the heart. This is the repeated declaration of the Word of God. Not only is it distinctly stated in the book from which our text is taken, but we find it in the Book of Psalms. And in Job we read, Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To Solomon, indeed, there was one living illustration of the truth Of his teaching to which he could recur, the mem ory of a father Whose heart was perfect toward the Lord his God; but the life of David is open to us, as it was to him, and we have further means of apprehending this truth in the history of men who.
