Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Minister and His Duties If a ministry of close on fifty years, during about a score of which it was my duty to lecture to Students of Divinity on their future work, do not plead an apology for the following pages, I fear I have no better one to offer. They would never have seen the light but for the repeatedly expressed desire of former students. In their preparation for the press I have aimed less at the formal completeness of a scientific treatise than at practical utility. I have tried to keep in mind the actual requirements of candidates for sacred office and of the junior clergy, not in one Church only, but in every evangelical communion. For the duties of a Christian Minister are in all Protestant communities fundamentally the same. Even in details they approximate more closely than our superficial divisions might lead us, on a casual survey, to perceive. But, while keeping present-day conditions steadily in view, I have not forgotten that, like every other theological discipline, Practical Theology must draw its guiding principles from the New Testament, and derive illustration from its own past in the Christian centuries. Book excerpt: Every pastor struggles with demands for his time, and how to determine priorities in ministry. Some choose to respond to the most urgent needs, while others seek a more balanced and intentional approach. But what determines these priorities? Where should a busy pastor look for wisdom in making decisions? In the Pastor’s Ministry, pastor and author Brian Croft looks to the Scriptures to determine the top ten priorities for a faithful pastoral ministry. These biblically rooted responsibilities help pastors determine how to spend their time and with greater discernment respond to the demands of the church. Each of these priorities is rooted in a direct command of God’s Word, including: Guarding the Truth Preaching and Teaching the Word Praying for the Flock Setting an Example Visiting the Sick Comforting the Grieving Caring for Widows Confronting Sin Encouraging the Faint-Hearted Identifying and Training Other Leaders To be successful and faithful in pastoral ministry, every pastor needs to understand these core callings and make them part of his regular practice. These ten responsibilities guide how a pastor schedules his time, helping him to lay the foundation for a biblically faithful ministry in his church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If most pastors were pressed to describe an average day of ministry, they'd have trouble doing it. In a single day, a pastor may fill many different roles in quick succession, from counselor to theologian to student to CEO to custodian (well, let's hope there's usually someone else available to perform that last role). Some roles come more naturally than others, but every pastor wants to perform each role to the best of their ability. In The 10 Key Roles of a Pastor, church consultant Gary L. McIntosh shows pastors how to - understand and juggle their many essential roles - prioritize their time and energy - manage their people's expectations of them - and empower others to take up the vital work of the church body Pastors just starting out in ministry, as well as those who have been at it a while and find themselves overworked and overwhelmed, will value this practical resource. It is also an enlightening read for those in church leadership who would benefit from understanding the pressures their pastor faces on a daily basis.

Church Membership is a useful tool for churches to distribute en masse to new and potential members of their congregation. This volume is part of the 9Marks: Building Healthy Churches series. Look for upcoming, quick-read formats of the following marks of a healthy church: expositional preaching, biblical theology, the gospel, conversion, evangelism, church discipline, discipleship and growth, and church leadership.
