Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of systematic theology is to engage not only the head but also the heart and hands. Only recently has the church compartmentalized these aspects of life—separating the academic discipline of theology from the spiritual disciplines of faith and obedience. This multivolume work brings together rigorous historical and theological scholarship with spiritual disciplines and practical insights—characterized by a simple, accessible, comprehensive, Reformed, and experiential approach. In this volume, Joel R. Beeke and Paul M. Smalley shift from the doctrine of God (theology proper) to the doctrine of humanity (anthropology) and the doctrine of Christ (Christology). This extensive reformed theology explores the Bible's teaching about who we are and why we were created, as well as who Jesus is and why his divinity is essential to the Christian faith.

Book excerpt: For more than two millennia believers have struggled with the antinomy of God's absolute sovereignty over and man's ultimate responsibility in justification and sanctification. Theologians have used some version of the terms »active justification« and »definitive sanctification« in an attempt to illuminate this mystery. However, in the past decade scholars have begun to criticize these concepts, saying that they are unsupported in Scripture, lead to theological confusion, and are of no practical benefit to believers.Through the work of theologians from the broader Dutch Reformed tradition, especially Herman Bavinck, Alexander Comrie, Herman Witsius, and Abraham Kuyper. Jae-Eun Park demonstrates that the terms »active justification« and »definitive sanctification« are derived from Scripture and serve to clarify, not obscure the doctrines of justification and sanctification. In addition, the book shows that neglect, misuse, or misunderstanding of the terms have resulted in contemporary criticisms that are unconvincing and unfounded.Writings of the aforementioned theologians define and expound four characteristics held in common between active justification and definitive sanctification, i.e., inseparability, objectivity and decisiveness, Christ-centeredness, and God's absolute sovereignty – concepts of the mentioned theologians. All four characteristics of active justification and definitive sanctification emphasize the »God-driven« nature of salvation.Jae-Eun Park explains how – when properly defined and presented – the two terms are important theologically, bringing clarity to the issue of the perfect balance between God's sovereignty and human responsibility in salvation. He also shows how active justification and definitive sanctification offers practical assurance of their perseverance unto glory to true believers, and provides pastors with an invaluable tool for exhorting parishioners who may have lapsed into either triumphalism or defeatism.

Book excerpt: There is a particular pressing question that seems to permeate the whole of Charnock’s works: “If the greatest or highest degree of excellence is found in this imitable perfection of God, this conformity to holiness, then what does this conformity look like in the soul that has been regenerated?” This book undertakes a detailed analysis of the various components of Charnock’s doctrine of regeneration, more specifically, the continuity in his thought working out the reality that is contained within the highest degree of excellence that is found in the imitable perfection of God. Charnock brings the whole of that image of God renewed in the soul under the microscope of Scripture to reveal the details found in the conformity to that vital principle, holiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a response to the unique challenges facing the twenty-first-century American church, church planting has become a popular topic. But at a time when churches that spread the seed of the Word through preaching, the sacraments, and prayer are greatly needed, much of the focus has been on planting churches that adapt pop culture to meet “consumer demand.” In Planting, Watering, Growing, the authors of this collection of essays weave together theological wisdom, personal experiences, and practical suggestions, guiding readers through the foundations and methods of planting confessional churches that uphold the Word of God.

But outside these denominations seven more developed over time, of which some are hardly visible for outsiders, and also non-protestant groups tried to stay together. The eighteen essays in this volume describe the ways in which small groups of Dutch immigrants made efforts to maintain their identities in the United States and Canada between 1800 and 2000. Until now, many of those groups had never been objects of academic research. In the essays presented here, the Dutch, American, and Canadian authors zoom in on the connections of these groups with the Netherlands, with other Dutch-Americans, and other ethnic groups. All of them faced the issues of language and education.
