Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chouans, or Bretagne 1799 This costume, less original than the preceding, soiled by long usage and blackened by sweat and dust, had the historic merit of serving as a transition to the almost sumptuous garb of some few men who were scattered here and there among the motley as semblage like bright flowers. In very truth their blue linen trousers and their red or yellow waist coats, like square cuirasses, embellished with two parallel rows of brass buttons, stood out as sharply against the white clothes and the goatskins of their comrades as bluebells and poppies in a field of grain. Some were shod with the clogs that the peasants of Bretagne know how to make for themselves; but almost all had heavy hob-nailed leather shoes and coats of very coarse cloth, cut like the old French c0ats, whose shape is still religiously adhered to by our peasants. Their shirt collars were fastened by silver buttons, representing hearts or anchors. Lastly, their wallets seemed to be better supplied than those of their companions, and several of them added to their travelling equipment, a flask, full of eau-de-vie doubtless, which hung by a strap from the neck. Book excerpt: EARLY in the year VIII., at the beginning of Vend miaire, or, to conform to our own calendar, towards the close of September, 1799, a hundred or so of peasants and a large number of citizens, who had left Fougeres in the morning on their way to Rlayenne, mere going up the little mountain of La PBlerine, half-way between Fougeres and Ernbe, a small town where travellers along that road are in the habit of resting. This com- pany, divided into groups that were more or less nu- merous, presented a collection of such fantastic costumes and a mixture of individuals belonging to so many and diverse localities and professions that it will be well to describe their characteristic differences, in order to give to this history the vivid local coloring to which so much valde is attached in these days, - though some critics do assert that it injures the representation of sentiments. The straight locks of their long hair mingling with those of the goatskill liid their faces, which were bent on the ground, so completely that the garment might have been thought their own skin, and they tllemselves mistaken at first sight for a species of the animal which served them as clothing. Gut through this tangle of hair their eyes were presently seen to shine like dew-drops in a thicket, aid their glances, full of human intelligence, caused fear rather than pleasure to those who Inet them. Their heads were covered with a dirty head-gear of red flannel, not unlike the Phrygian cap which the Republic had lately adopted as an emblem of liberty. Each man carried over his sliolder a heavj stick of knotted oak, at the end of which hung a linen bag with little in it. Some wore, over the red cap, a coarse felt hat, with a broad brim adorned by a sort of woollen cbenille of many colors which was fastened round it. Others were clothed entirely in the coarse linen of which the trousers and wallets of all were made, and shoed nothing that was distinctive of the new order of civilization. Their long hair fell upon the collar of a round jacket with square pockets, which reached to the hips only, a garment peculiar to the pensantrr of western France. Beneath this jacket, which was vorn open, a waistcoat of the same linen with large buttons was visible. Some of the company marched in wooden shoes others, by way of economy, carried them in their hand. This costome, soiled b long tlsage, blackened with swelt nncl tlnst, and less original than that of the other me, had the historic merit of seming as a transition between the goatskins and the brilliant, almost sumptuons, dress of a few inclivicluals dispersed here and tlicre among the groups, where they shone like flowers. In fact, the blue linen trousers of these last, and their recl or yellow waistcoats, adorned with two parallel rows of brass buttons and not unlike breast- plates, stood out as vividly among the white linen and shaggy skins of their companions as the corn-flowers and poppies in a wheat-field. Some of them wore wooden shoes, which the peasants of Brittany make for them- selves bnt the greater number had heavy hob-nailed boots, and coats of coarse cloth cut in the fashion of the old regime, the shape of which the peasants have re- ligiously retained even to the present day. Book Synopsis Enacting Brittany by : Patrick Young
Download or read book Enacting Brittany written by Patrick Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brittany offers an excellent example of a French region that once attracted a certain cultivated elite of travel connoisseurs but in which more popular tourism developed relatively early in the twentieth century. It is therefore a strategic choice as a case study of some of the processes associated with the emergence of mass tourism, and the effects of this kind of tourism development on local populations. Efforts to package Breton cultural difference in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries marked a significant advance in heritage tourism, and a departure from what is commonly perceived to be a French intolerance of cultural diversity within its borders. This study explores the means by which key actors - middle class associations, businesses, governmental bodies, cultural intermediaries - pursued tourist development in the region and the effect this had on Breton cultural identification. Chapters are arranged thematically and consider the rise of rural tourism in France and the preservation, display, and enactment of Breton culture in its most visible locations: the natural landscape of Brittany, Breton dress, early heritage festivals and religious Pardons. The final chapter explores the staging of Breton culture at the Paris World's Fair of 1937 and the roots of state-sponsored mass tourism. Beyond those interested in the history of French tourism, this study will also be invaluable to historians and social scientists concerned with understanding the dynamics involved in the emergence of mass tourism, its causes and consequences in particular locales in the present as well as in the past.
