Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chivalric Turn examines the medieval obsession with defining and practising superior conduct, and the social consequences that followed from it. Historians since the seventeenth century have tended to understand medieval conduct through the eyes of the writers of the Enlightenment, viewing superior conduct as 'knightly' behaviour, and categorising it as chivalry. Using, for the first time, the full range of the considerable twelfth- and thirteenth-century literature on conduct in the European vernaculars and in Latin, The Chivalric Turn describes and defines what superior lay conduct was in European society before chivalry, and maps how and why chivalry emerged and redefined superior conduct in the last generation of the twelfth century. The emergence of chivalry was only one part of a major social change, because it changed how people understood the concept of nobility, which had consequences for the medieval understanding of gender, social class, violence, and the limits of law.

Book excerpt: A bold new history of the rise and expansion of the Norman Dynasty across Europe from Byzantium to England In the eleventh century the climate was improving, population was growing, and people were on the move. The Norman dynasty ranged across Europe, led by men who achieved lasting fame, such as William the Conqueror and Robert Guiscard. These figures cultivated an image of unstoppable Norman success, and their victories make for a great story. But how much of it is true? In this insightful history, Judith Green challenges old certainties and explores the reality of Norman life across the continent. There were many soldiers of fortune, but their successes were down to timing, good luck, and ruthless leadership. Green shows the Normans’ profound impact, from drastic change in England to laying the foundations for unification in Sicily to their contribution to the First Crusade. Going beyond the familiar, she looks at personal dynastic relationships and the important part women played in what at first sight seems a resolutely masculine world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Women are thinkers and takers. Men are scorers and breakers. Reality sucks. The truth hurts. Lies appease. The genetic code of each species cannot be changed. The animal in every man is caged. He is happy locked away, behind bars, in his prison of silence. Entice the beast and he’ll murder the prey. Women are the keys to control the fury. If the curiosity of the howling sounds lures them towards the mating call that every wolf seeks to taste, they will ravage the meal. They must keep the doors to that pleasure locked and the beast remains shackled. Women are magnetic fields, emitting a mighty force through the language her body speaks. She walks like the moon and the motion of her sways linger, leaving behind marks on man’s territory. She is beautiful, flawless, hypnotic and perfect. A species with such attributes must be the jewel in the museum, to be admired for her miraculous existence. Displaying the priceless ornament will tempt the insatiable thief to steal and blemish the purity of a unique stone. We are different. To tame the wild nature of man, her distance from the wolf is imperative. Crawling towards him, with her spineless motives and empty words, pretending to be victual, his hunger will exacerbate and his greed, impossible to control. Women must be modest. That, which is not on show, cannot tempt and that, which cannot tempt will be safe and that, which is safe is protected and secured and out of harm’s way.”

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1940. Chivalry denotes the ideals and practices considered suitable for a noble. The word itself is reminiscent of the aristocratic society of medieval France dominated by mounted warriors. As early as the eleventh century, several different views of chivalric standards and behavior had appeared. During the next four hundred years, these conceptions of the ideal nobleman were developed by and for the feudal ruling class. French Chivalry studies chivalry from the perspectives of both social history and the history of ideas. The first chapter provides readers unfamiliar with medieval history the background required for understanding the chapters on chivalry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature of medieval knighthood is shown to have influenced exploration narratives from Marco Polo to Captain John Smith. Explorers from Marco Polo to Captain John Smith viewed their travels and discoveries in the light of attitudes they absorbed from the literature of medieval knighthood. Their own accounts, and contemporary narratives [reinforced by the interest of early printers], reveal this interplay, but historians of exploration on the one hand, and of chivalry on the other, have largely ignored this cultural connection. Jennifer Goodman convincingly develops the ideaof the chivalric romance as an imaginative literature of travel; she traces the publication of medieval chivalric texts alongside exploration narratives throughout the later middle ages and renaissance, and reveals parallel themesand preoccupations. She illustrates this with the histories of a sequence of explorers and their links with chivalry, from Marco Polo to Captain John Smith, and including Gadifer de la Salle and his expedition to the Canary Islands, Prince Henry the Navigator, Cortés, Hakluyt, and Sir Walter Raleigh. JENNIFER GOODMAN teaches at Texas A & M University.
