Book excerpt: Excerpt from The China Shop "Larry Munro" ... As ever, the repetition of the name, even spoken by myself, goaded me through all the familiar stages of memory and exasperation and sense of unbearable injury, till it reached a climax when it seemed the whole universe was not space enough for me and Larry both; and that one of us would be crowded out and suffocated: one of us had better die. And I cared about Larry sufficiently to wish I might be that one. Here was the grotesque twist on the situation! Book excerpt: Guided by 20th century theories of language, Hansen's novel approach to interpretive theory launched the modern analytical study of Ancient Chinese philosophy. This 1983 publication challenged authority-based traditional "religious" accounts stemming from 18th and 19th century missionary dictionaries and reliance on interpretive authority. "Hansen shows that one tiny grammatical question... has profound implications for the understanding of Chinese philosophy. ...This is surely a decisive breakthrough ... a great success. His observations about Chinese thought in general are always stimulating and illuminating. A book which excites one to rethink things from the foundations." A. C. Graham "An ambitious and provocative book concerning the relationship between language and thought in ancient China. ... a novel and powerful theory about the nature of classical Chinese language ... a better understanding of many issues in classical Chinese philosophy." P. J. Ivanhoe "[The] importance of this book lies ... in its engaging style, novel ideas, and rigorous argumentation, which can serve as a model for future work in Chinese philosophy. Hansen takes Chinese philosophy seriously as philosophy. For anyone tired of the superficial summaries or scholastic commentaries that so often characterize this field, Hansen's book will be a memorable and welcome change." Michael Martin

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book excerpt: The traditional Chinese notion of itself as the “middle kingdom”—literally the cultural and political center of the world—remains vital to its own self-perceptions and became foundational to Western understandings of China. This worldview was primarily constructed during the earliest imperial unification of China during the Qin and Han dynasties (221 BCE–220 CE). But the fragmentation of empire and subsequent “Age of Disunion” (220–589 CE) that followed undermined imperial orthodoxies of unity, centrality, and universality. In response, geographical writing proliferated, exploring greater spatial complexities and alternative worldviews. This book is the first study of the emergent genre of geographical writing and the metageographies that structured its spatial thought during that period. Early medieval geographies highlighted spatial units and structures that the Qin–Han empire had intentionally sought to obscure—including those of regional, natural, and foreign spaces. Instead, these postimperial metageographies reveal a polycentric China in a polycentric world. Sui–Tang (581–906 CE) officials reasserted the imperial model as spatial orthodoxy. But since that time these alternative frameworks have persisted in geographical thought, continuing to illuminate spatial complexities that have been incompatible with the imperial and nationalist ideal of a monolithic China at the center of the world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Custom House Justice and Haviland China The fact that Paris prices are only 15% above Limoges prices, while Paris expenses are 26vz% above Limoges expenses, is certainly a proof that our Limoges prices are high, and I confess my surprise that the Board should have been willing to make use of the frankness and sincerity of my letter to Mr. Clayton to raise them still higher. As Haviland co. Of New York cannot pay duties on prices above those at which they actually buy their china, and at which their competitors pay their purchases, they can continue to buy from Haviland Co. Of Limoges, only on condition that the latter will cease to sell in Europe. Haviland co. Of Limoges have, therefore, given up their Paris store, and ceased to sell outside of the United States. The Paris expenses of Haviland Co. Of Limoges no longer existing, duties on these expenses can no longer be charged to Haviland co. Of New York. Everybody in our trade and in the Custom House knows that Paris is not a wholesale market for china tableware, and this is proved by the fact that no Paris invoice of a wholesale purchase of such ware has been entered at the Custom House. The only china sold at wholesale in Paris is sold by travelers from Limoges, who stop at an hotel with their trunks Of samples and take orders at the Li moges prices. On the other hand, the Custom House knows that all the invoices of china tableware purchased at wholesale are from Limoges. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seven Military Classics is one of the most profound studies of warfare ever written, a stanchion in sinological and military history. It presents an Eastern tradition of strategic thought that emphasizes outwitting one's opponent through speed, stealth, flexibility, and a minimum of force -- an approach very different from that stressed in the West. Safeguarded for centuries by the ruling elite of imperial China, even in modern times these writings have been known only to a handful of Western specialists. This volume contains seven separate essays, written between 500 BCE and 700 CE, that preserve the essential tenets of strategy distilled from the experience of the most brilliant warriors of ancient China.
