Book excerpt: In the 1600s, Marcos Cunamasi, an indigenous man in Pelileo, Ecuador, hid his child to protect him from officials who would put the boy to work in the textile mill. Cunamasi was forced to turn him over. Because his young son couldn’t keep up with spinning his quota of wool per day, Cunamasi helped so the child wouldn’t be whipped. After working a year, Cunamasi was paid a shirt and a hat. Interwoven is the untold story of indigenous people’s historical experience in colonial Ecuador’s textile economy. It focuses on the lives of Native Andean families in Pelileo, a town dominated by one of Quito’s largest and longest-lasting textile mills. Quito’s textile industry developed as a secondary market to supply cloth to mining centers in the Andes; thus, the experience of indigenous people in Pelileo is linked to the history of mining in Bolivia and Peru. Although much has been written about colonial Quito’s textile economy, Rachel Corr provides a unique perspective by putting indigenous voices at the center of that history. Telling the stories of Andean families of Pelileo, she traces their varied responses to historical pressures over three hundred years; the responses range from everyday acts to the historical transformation of culture through ethnogenesis. These stories of ordinary Andean men and women provide insight into the lived experience of the people who formed the backbone of Quito’s textile industry.

Thousands of children now grow up apart from one or both parents, as the parents are forced to work outside the country in order to send their children to school, give them access to quality health care, or, in some cases, just provide them with enough food. While the issue of transnational families has already generated much interest, this book is the first to offer a close look at the lives of the children in these families. Drawing on in-depth interviews with the family members left behind, the author examines two dimensions of the transnational family. First, she looks at the impact of distance on the intergenerational relationships, specifically from the children’s perspective. She then analyzes gender norms in these families, both their reifications and transgressions in transnational households. Acknowledging that geographical separation unavoidably strains family intimacy, Parreñas argues that the maintenance of traditional gender ideologies exacerbates and sometimes even creates the tensions that plague many Filipino migrant families.

Because of her foresight I grew up in Santa Cruz, New Mexico, and became educated in the Catholic tradition. Its about a person that carried through his Mothers wishes. The world she opened led me to become one of the first members of the Martinezs clan to get a College degree. Its about a career that starts in the New Mexico State capitol and winds up in the California Aerospace Industry. Its about a person that is proud of his heritage, proud of his family, and proud of his country. My life has been driven by a philosophy learned from the experiences of others. I recognized the importance of learned experiences so I embraced what they shared with me. I adopted their experiences as my own. I lost my father at an early age so I really couldnt use him as a model for learning. I listened to the elders where ever and whenever the occasion presented itself. I learned to avoid the bad and accept what I perceived to be good. Those of my parents; Andres and Fedelina follow my own story. The others that follow are those of their parents and grandparents. I have enjoyed doing research on them, and it has been especially rewarding to actually put all these stories on paper. My family comprising of both the Martinez Clan and the Archuletas number in the hundreds. Papatin and Mama Ignacita had thirteen children; the Archuletas Papa Esquipula and Mama Aleja had seven children. Without a doubt some of these relatives can share much more interesting memoirs than mine. I have knowledge of many interesting stories about them. My uncles served our Country during World War II as some of my older cousins did. Im sure they can relate to some very interesting experiences during those times. Documentation that contains historical data on our ancestors is available for those interested in Genealogy. The Catholic Churches and missions throughout the southwest have kept records dating back to the colonization of the New World. Other agencies like the United States Census Bureau, The New Mexico Genealogical society and the Organized Church of the Latter Day Saints also maintain information on settlers coming to live in the New World. Information exists on almost every US citizen; all it takes is hours of research. Also in the past, information about ones ancestors was passed on either written or orally. Ancestors would keep records in Bibles or in books theyd written themselves. It was also very common for the family elders to repeat tales during campfire gatherings or around the dinner table. My first recollection of tales involving ancestors was my Grandma Ignacita talking about her side of the family. I remember these tales being told over and over. The story of my maternal grandfather, Luciano Herrera is one that I heard over and over. Mother used to repeat stories relating to him, to a point that I became familiar and intrigued with his life story. I started to do research on him only to discover that genealogy could be fascinating which lead me to do further research on my other ancestors. Ive documented much

With that statement, Asunción Lavrin begins her introduction to this collection of original essays, the first in English to explore sexuality and marriage in colonial Latin America. The nine contributors, including historians and anthropologists, examine various aspects of the male-female relationship and the mechanisms for controlling it developed by church and state after the European conquest of Mexico and Central and South America. Seldom has so much light been shed on the sexual behavior of the men and women who lived there from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. These chapters examine the variety of sexual expression in different periods and among persons of different social and economic status, the relations of the sexes as proscribed by church and state and the various forms of resistance to their constraints, the couple's own view of the bond that united them and of their social obligations in producing a family, and the dissolution of that bond.
