It is easier to see the conditions in their separate; ness, to insist upon one at the expense of the other, to make antagonists of them, than to discover a reality to which each belongs. The easy thing is to seize upon something in the nature of the child, or upon something in the developed consciousness of the adult, and insist upon that as the key to the whole prob-a lem. When this happens a really serious prac tical problem - that of interaction - is trans formed into an unreal, and hence insoluble, theoretic problem. Instead of seeing the edu-a cative steadily and as a whole, we see conflict ing terms. We get the case of the child the curriculum; of the individual nature 275. Social culture. Below all other divisions in pedagogic opinion lies this opposition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Life and Literature The aim of this book is to call the teacher's attention to the choice of material in literature best suited to the nature and needs of elementary school pupils. To this end a gen eral survey is made of the field of child psychology, and a course in reading and literature is developed in harmony with the dominant mental characteristics and natural ih terests of children. It is gratifying to notice a tendency on the part of educa tional authorities to enlarge the school curriculum in liter ature. School readers alone must fail to interest children in reading. Complete units should be presented instead of extracts. Every phase of child life should be reflected; and all material should possess true literary merit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curriculum Since the opening of the twentieth century, the evolution of our social order has been proceeding with great and ever-accelerating rapidity. Simple conditions have been growing complex. Small institutions have been growing large. Increased specialization has been multiplying human interdependencies and the consequent need of coordinating effort. Democracy is increasing within the Nation; and growing throughout the world. All classes are aspiring to a full human opportunity. Never before have civilization and humanization advanced so swiftly. As the world presses eagerly forward toward the accomplishment of new things, education also must advance no less swiftly. It must provide the intelligence and the aspirations necessary for the advance; and for stability and consistency in holding the gains. Education must take a pace set, not by itself, but by social progress. The present program of public education was mainly formulated during the simpler conditions of the nineteenth century. In details it has been improved. In fundamentals it is not greatly different. A program never designed for the present day has been inherited. Any inherited system, good for its time, when held to after its day, hampers social progress. It is not enough that the system, fundamentally unchanged in plan and purpose, be improved in details. In education this has been done in conspicuous degree. Our schools to-day are better than ever before. Teachers are better trained. Supervision is more adequate. Buildings and equipment are enormously improved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child Under Eight The Modern Educator's Library has been designed to give considered expositions Of the best theory and practice in English education of today. It is planned to cover the principal problems of educational theory in general, of curriculum and organisation, of some unexhausted aspects of the history of education, and of special branches Of applied education. The Editor and his colleagues have had in view the needs of young teachers and Of those training to be teachers, but since the school and the schoolmaster are not the sole factors in the educative process, it is hoped that educators in general (and which Of us is not in some sense or other an educator?) as well as the professional schoolmaster may find in the series some help in understanding precept and practice in education of to-day and to-morrow. For we have borne in mind not only what is but what ought to be. To exhibit the educator's work as a vocation requiring the best possible preparation is the spirit in which these volumes have been written. NO artificial uniformity has been sought or imposed, and while the Editor is responsible for the series in general, the responsibility for the opinions expressed in each volume rests solely with its author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the Child Neither harsh nor tender parents suspect the truth expressed by Carlyle when he said that the marks of a noble and original tempera ment are wild, strong emotions, that must be controlled by a discipline as hard as steel. People either strive to root out passions altogether, or they abstain from teaching the child to get them under control. To suppress the real personality of the child, and to supplant it with another personality continues to be a pedagogical crime common to those who announce loudly that education should only develop the real individual nature of the child. They are still not convinced that egoism on the part of the child is justified. Just as little are they convinced of the possibility that evil can be changed into good. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paideia Proposal is a system of liberal education intended for all children. It was a response to what Adler characterized as the United States' antidemocratic or undemocratic educational system, a holdover from the 19th century, when the understanding of basic human rights fell short of 20th century expectations. The Paidea Proposal was based upon the following assumptions: 1) All children are educable; 2) Education is never completed in school or higher institutions of learning, but is a lifelong process of maturity for all citizens; 3) The primary cause of learning is the activity of the child's mind, which is not created by, but only assisted by the teacher; 4) Multiple types learning and teaching must be utilized in education, not just teacher lecturing, or telling; and 5) A student's preparation for earning a living is not the primary objective of schooling. Adler stressed that the proposal is much more than just a return to the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic. It is not simply a return to the values of classical civilization, but a return to what is of enduring value. It is a democratic proposal intended for the education of all, and not an elitist program as some have alleged.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Career of the Child Method should be determined by the laws of development of the child instead of by pure logic and the subject matter itself. Method means not only a logical arrangement of the materials in a given subject of instruction, but also the ques tion of its adaptation to nascent growth periods of the child and his interests as determined by native instincts and en vironment. Even in teaching mathematics the laws of growth and development of the child must be considered. In recent years the order of topics in mathematics has been very materially changed to harmonize with the well established laws of growth. Dr. Groszmann has pointed out the fact that not only chronological growth and physiological growth, but also psychological growth periods must be observed.
