Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book-length study of women's involvement in the Chicano Movement of the late 1960s and 1970s, ¡Chicana Power! tells the powerful story of the emergence of Chicana feminism within student and community-based organizations throughout southern California and the Southwest. As Chicanos engaged in widespread protest in their struggle for social justice, civil rights, and self-determination, women in el movimiento became increasingly militant about the gap between the rhetoric of equality and the organizational culture that suppressed women's leadership and subjected women to chauvinism, discrimination, and sexual harassment. Based on rich oral histories and extensive archival research, Maylei Blackwell analyzes the struggles over gender and sexuality within the Chicano Movement and illustrates how those struggles produced new forms of racial consciousness, gender awareness, and political identities. ¡Chicana Power! provides a critical genealogy of pioneering Chicana activist and theorist Anna NietoGomez and the Hijas de Cuauhtémoc, one of the first Latina feminist organizations, who together with other Chicana activists forged an autonomous space for women's political participation and challenged the gendered confines of Chicano nationalism in the movement and in the formation of the field of Chicana studies. She uncovers the multifaceted vision of liberation that continues to reverberate today as contemporary activists, artists, and intellectuals, both grassroots and academic, struggle for, revise, and rework the political legacy of Chicana feminism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing that diversity in the curriculum is as much about a way of thinking as it is about specific information, Lutzker presents a compendium of innovative and practical classroom strategies and widely available information resources which will enable faculty to increase the multicultural content of their courses without necessarily making major changes in their accustomed methods of teaching. This is a handbook for college faculty in all disciplines who would like to increase the multicultural content of their courses, but have been reluctant to do so for a variety of reasons including an already overloaded syllabus, a lack of background in the subject, uncertainty about student reactions, or lack of time to make substantial changes in an existing syllabus. Administrators anxious to increase diversity in the curriculum of their institutions, but unable to fund large-scale curriculum revision projects, will also find this volume useful. Part I is concerned with classroom strategies and with student research projects. Starting with discussions of objectives and priorities, the underlying role of critical thinking, and the importance of language sensitivity, the book then describes specific classroom strategies useful for increasing diversity. The subsequent chapters are devoted to discussions of general guidelines for developing student projects with a multicultural perspective, innovative alternatives to the traditional term paper, and suggestions for multicultural student projects which do not require library research. Part I concludes with a discussion of possible student reactions to increased multiculturalism, and suggested approaches to those reactions. Part II is concerned with information resources which will be useful to instructors and to students. Fully annotated lists are provided in a variety of areas including widely available primary sources, specialized biographical directories, sources for sample syllabi in all disciplines, guides to ethnic and foreign press, to films and videos, and to electronic resources. Part II concludes with a discussion designed to increase efficiency in using the library catalog to locate information in multicultural subject areas. Appendices provide sample research worksheets, a list of small publishers and distributors of multicultural books, and an annotated bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious undertaking is designed to acquaint students, teachers, and researchers with reference sources in any branch of English studies, which Marcuse defines as "all those subjects and lines of critical and scholarly inquiry presently pursued by members of university departments of English language and literature.'' Within each of 24 major sections, Marcuse lists and annotates bibliographies, guides, reviews of research, encyclopedias, dictionaries, journals, and reference histories. The annotations and various indexes are models of clarity and usefulness, and cross references are liberally supplied where appropriate. Although cost-conscious librarians will probably consider the several other excellent literary bibliographies in print, such as James L. Harner's Literary Research Guide (Modern Language Assn. of America, 1989), larger academic libraries will want Marcuse's volume.-- Jack Bales, Mary Washington Coll. Book excerpt: Acquisitions and Collection Development in the Humanities is a one-of-a-kind guide on the procedures, approaches, and principles needed to make sound decisions in acquiring materials in various areas of the humanities. It gives you an inside look at managerial concerns in documentary delivery, changing budgetary needs, and fluctuations in journal prices and helps you address many of the important questions in acquisitions and collection development within both traditional and technological environments. As contributing author Dennis Dillon puts it, the ultimate goal of humanities librarians “is not to acquire information bytes and bits, but to promote integrity: integrity of texts, integrity of selection, the integrity of the collection, and the integrity of the library and its ultimate purpose.” This objective underlies this multifaceted and comprehensive collection of articles, as the authors address many interesting issues, developments, and challenges in the field, including: selecting candidates for digitization and producing e-texts collecting in areas that don’t have immediate utility or that may be unpopular what librarians need to know about the humanities as a discipline in order to effectively meet the informational and technological needs of their constituencies online discussion groups as useful sources of webliographic information cooperative collection building the importance of maintaining a high degree of local ownership for materials the principles, criteria, and tools needed to develop a Native American studies collection document-driven and use-driven approaches to collecting acquiring and preserving records that chronicle the role played by African Americans in the United States’development Acquisitions and Collection Development in the Humanities can help professional librarians, graduate school faculty, and students in information and library science acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for building a broadly based and academically responsive collection. It will certainly help you keep up with changes in the information environment and show you how the tools you’ve developed for selecting traditional library materials will be useful as you grapple with electronic texts, “spider” search mechanisms on the Web, becoming a webliographer, and budget shortfalls.

Book excerpt: The past decade has seen a renewed interest in ethnicity by people in search of their own identities, as well as by writers and scholars from every discipline. But despite the contagion of ethnic aEURO fever,aEURO the Chicano culture is neither widely known nor appreciated in the United States. The authors of this book attempt to close the gap in current knowledge. Their purpose is fourfold: (1) to add to the knowledge of Chicano communities; (2) to add to the knowledge and understanding of how Mexican Americans have adapted in various urban areas; (3) to present descriptions and analyses of communities in the Midwest, where the presence of Mexican Americans has been more typically neglected; and (4) to bring an anthropological approach to the understanding of this second-largest minority group in the United States.
