Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Examiner, 1864, Vol. 5: A Monthly Journal, Devoted to the Educational, Scientific and Practical Interests of the Medical Profession When we had removed the brain from the skull to a table, I turned it upside down, and indicated to the Professor the organ of sensation of the left side. The first incision by the scalpel disclosed about half a drachm of encysted pus; at the sight of which the Professor exclaimed, Here is a demonstration of your discovery of the organ of sensation! I now indicated to him the organ of motion of the right side of the brain, and after a search of a few seconds, he said, And here is a demonstra tion of the organ of motion it was a tubercle as large as a garden green pea of a bluish-gray color and granulated struct ure. Book excerpt: This “informative” look at the causes of high mortality rates among black Civil War soldiers “gives readers some insight into current health disparities” (JAMA). Black soldiers in the American Civil War were far more likely to die of disease than were white soldiers. In Intensely Human, historian Margaret Humphreys explores why this uneven mortality occurred and how it was interpreted at the time. In doing so, she uncovers the perspectives of mid-nineteenth-century physicians and others who were eager to implicate the so-called innate inferiority of the black body. In the archival collections of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, Humphreys found evidence that the high death rate among black soldiers resulted from malnourishment, inadequate shelter and clothing, inferior medical attention, and assignments to hazardous environments. While some observant physicians of the day attributed the black soldiers’ high mortality rate to these circumstances, few medical professionals—on either side of the conflict—were prepared to challenge the “biological evidence” of white superiority. Humphreys shows how, despite sympathetic and responsible physicians’ efforts to expose the truth, the stereotype of black biological inferiority prevailed during the war and after.

Dr. Luke Pryor Blackburn, a Confederate physician and expert in infectious diseases, had an idea that might turn the tide: he would risk his own life and career to bring a yellow fever epidemic to the North. To carry out his mission, he would need some accomplices. Tracing the plans and movements of the conspirators, this thoroughly researched history describes in detail the yellow fever plot of 1864-1865.

Second, a sincere desire on the part of the faculty to put into practical Operation a system of medical college instruction more in accordance with sound educational principles, and better adapted to the present state of the science and art of medicine, than that which has been so long adhered to by the medical schools of this country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Examiner, 1866, Vol. 7: A Monthly Journal, Devoted to the Educational, Scientific and Practical Interests of the Medical Profession There are three varieties of this class of advertisements, two of which are found in the columns of newspapers, and the other, in the form of handbills and pamphlets, is pasted along the streets, thrown into public conveyances, and left upon the doorsteps of private dwellings. They all possess, in a greater or less degree, three qualities, namely, false pretensions, obscen ity, and either direct or indirect encouragement to vice and crime. The false pretensions consist in, first, the most abominable lying in regard to the previous education, experience, and cm cial positions of the pretended doctors, for curing private dis eases; and, econd, the positive and unqualified promise to cure permanently and Speedily, all the chronic and private diseases of the two sexes. Whoever opens a newspaper, and glances at these advertisements, and then remembers that not. One of these advertising pretenders has any actual medical education, or has ever studied medicine proper in their lives, and that they are not recognized as belonging to the medical profession by any respectable physician in the country, will have some idea of their impudently fraudulent character. And yet who can estimate the number of victims, of both sexes, who are annually caught, and their pockets emptied by these very pretensions.
