Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal carbonyl clusters (TMCCs) continue to inspire great interest in chemical research, as much for their fascinating structures as for potential industrial applications conferred by their unique properties. This highly accessible book introduces the bonding, structure, spectroscopic properties, and characterization of clusters, and then explores their synthesis, reactivity, reaction mechanisms and use in organic synthesis and catalysis. Transition Metal Carbonyl Cluster Chemistry describes models and rules that correlate cluster structure with electron count, which are then applied in worked examples. Subsequent chapters explain how bonding relates to molecular structure, demonstrate the use of spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, IR and MS in cluster chemistry, and outline the factors contributing to the stability, dynamics and reactivity of clusters. The second part of this book discusses the synthesis and applications of TMCCs. It emphasizes the differences between the reactivities of clusters vs. mononuclear metal complexes, contingent to the availability of multiple-bonding sites and heterosite reactivity. The final chapters discuss reactions in which clusters act as homogeneous catalysts; including discussion on the use of solid and biphasic liquid-liquid supported clusters in heterogeneous catalysts. A useful reference for those commencing further research or post-graduate study on metal carbonyl clusters and advanced organometallic chemistry, this book is also a cornerstone addition to academic and libraries as well as private collections.

Also known as cluster compounds, these compounds have been found to exhibit a rich diversity of molecular structures and reactivities. Descriptions of the structures and transformations of the complexes are central features. Separate chapters have been prepared for compounds containing bonds between transition metals and the metals of the copper and zinc subgroups. Unlike COMC, this volume contains an entire chapter devoted to studies of heteronuclear metal compounds in catalysis.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled THE CHEMISTRY OF MIXED-METAL CLUSTERS OF OSMIUM AND RHODIUM Submitted by LAU PO KWAN JASMINE for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in December 2005 The general background of metal clusters, the chemistry of osmium-rhodium mixed-metal clusters, and their potential catalytic applications are reviewed. The work in the synthesis, characterizations, and reactivity studies of different series of osmium-rhodium mixed-metal clusters help us to understand the properties and reactivities of new clusters as compared to the bulk metal surface. 1 1 1 A novel face-capping mode of toluene was observed in [Os Rh (μ -η η η - 3 4 3 C H CH )(CO) ] 1. Cluster 1, together with [Os Rh(-H)(η -C H CH )(CO) ] 2 6 5 3 13 4 6 5 3 12 and a known compound [Os Rh (η -C H CH )(-CO)(CO) ], were obtained from 5 2 6 5 3 16 the reaction of [Os Rh(μ-H) (CO) ] with toluene in the presence of an excess 3 3 12amount of 4-vinylphenol. The reaction of [Os Rh(-H) (CO) ] with an excess 3 3 12 amount of 4-vinylphenol (as a hydride acceptor) in refluxing m-xylene, chlorobenzene, or benzene yielded three new clusters [Os Rh {η -C H (CH ) } 5 2 6 4 3 2 6 6 (-CO)(CO) ] 3, [Os Rh (η -C H Cl)(-CO)(CO) ] 4, and [Os Rh (η -C H ) 16 5 2 6 5 16 5 2 6 6 (-CO)(CO) ] 5, respectively. 16 The hydrogenation of [Os Rh (η -C H CH )(-CO)(CO)] with 5 2 6 5 3 16 [Os (-H) (CO) ] resulted in moderate yields of two hydrogen-rich compounds: 3 2 10 [Os Rh (-H) (CO) ] 6 and [Os Rh Cl(-H) (CO) ] 7. The reaction of 7 3 11 23 5 3 8 18 [Os Rh (η -C H CH )(-CO)(CO) ] with hydrogen yielded a new cluster 5 2 6 5 3 16 compound, [Os Rh(-H) (CO) ] 8. A deuterium exchange experiment was 5 5 18 performed on 6, and 7. Both the compounds proved to be able to exchange the H atom with D in the presence of D SO, and the absence of the hydride signal in the 2 4 H NMR spectrum is consistent with this. Therefore, clusters 6 and 7 may serve as appropriate new hydrogen storage models. A detailed discussion of the chemistry of anionic osmium-rhodium mixed-metal clusters with Au cationic fragments using [Au(PPh )Cl] and [(AuCl) L-L], where L 3 2 = dppe (bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) or dppp (bis(diphenylphosphino)propane), is presented. Two mono-anionic osmium-rhodium mixed-metal clusters [PPN][Os Rh(μ-CO)(CO) ] 9 and [PPN][Os Rh (μ-CO) (CO) ] 10 were prepared 6 19 9 3 2 26 by the thermolysis of [Os Rh(μ-H) (CO) ]. Electrochemistry studies on 10 showed 3 3 12 four successive redox couples, and revealed a novel electron reservoir property. Treatment of 9 with two equivalent of [Au(PPh)Cl] gave compounds [Os Rh Au(CO) (PPh )] 11, and [Os Au (CO) (PPh ) ][Os Rh(μ-CO)(CO) ] 12. 4 3 18 3 5 3 15 3 3 6 19 Both compounds successfully demonstrated the introduction of the Au(PR ) units 3into transition-metal clusters. Two linked clusters [{Os RhAu(μ-CO)(CO) } (dppp)] 6 19 2 13 and [{Os RhAu(μ-CO)(CO) } (dppe)] 14 were prepared by the reaction of 9 6 19 2 with two equivalent [(AuCl) dppp] and [(AuCl) dppe], respectively. 2 2 The synthesis and characterization of linked cluster [{Os (CO) (μ -H)} 3 10 2 2 {μ,μ -NC H C H N}] 15 from the reaction of [Os Rh(μ-H) (CO) ] with aniline in 2 2 6 4 6 4 3 3 12 the presence of an excess amount of 4-vinyl phenol

The occurence of molecular clusters, like fullerene C60, constitutes a fundamental feature midway between the chemistry of isolated chemical compounds and that of the elements. Main features of the Cluster Chemistry of both main group and transition metal elements are treated in this book. The author highlights aspects releated to the synthesis, the structure, the special bonding and the reactivity of these species. The book is written as a textbook for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students. References in tables andillustrations permit the reader to reach relevant original information. Professor Gonzalez-Moraga fills a demand for a publication appropriate for dissemination and specially for teaching this exciting subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis is comprised of nine scientific articles and is preceded by an overview that contextualises all of publications. Mixed-metal clusters of group 6 and 9 have been of longstanding interest. The polar metal-metal bonds in these clusters exhibit great potential for substrate activation, and the widely disparate metals could increase cluster reactivity. Our previous studies of group 6 and 9 mixed-metal clusters have been mainly concentrated on low-nuclearity tetranuclear molybdenum/tungsten-iridium clusters, including the study of their structure, fluxionality, reactivity, electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry and optical properties. The thesis project herein mainly focuses on the synthesis of medium-nuclearity clusters of group 6 and 9. The first part of this body of work is concerned with the synthesis of medium-nuclearity molybdenum/tungsten-iridium clusters. Publication 1 details the synthesis of pentanuclear clusters by core expansion of tetranuclear molybdenum/tungsten-iridium clusters with capping reagents tetramethylcyclopentadienyl iridium dicarbonyl and pentamethylcyclopentadienyl iridium dicarbonyl. Publication 2 describes phosphine, isocyanide, and alkyne reactivity at several pentanuclear molybdenum/tungsten-iridium clusters that are reported in Publication 1. Three structurally characterized medium-nuclearity molybdenum-iridium clusters are presented in Publication 3.The second part of the thesis includes the synthesis of medium-nuclearity molybdenum/tungsten-rhodium-iridium clusters by core expansion reactions of tetranuclear molybdenum/tungsten-iridium clusters with capping reagents tetramethylcyclopentadienyl rhodium dicarbonyl and pentamethylcyclopentadienyl rhodium dicarbonyl. Publication 4 delineates a dynamic permutational isomerism in a pentanuclear ditungsten-rhodium-diiridium closo-cluster, together with the proposed mechanism and studies of the chemical and physical properties of the permutational isomers. Publication 5 and 6 detail the syntheses of penta- and hexa-nuclear molybdenum/tungsten-rhodium-iridium clusters by core expansion of tetranuclear molybdenum/tungsten-iridium clusters with the rhodium capping reagents, and phosphine and alkyne chemistry of the pentanuclear clusters. Publication 7 demonstrates the synthesis and structural studies of a hexanuclear trimolybdenum-triiridium cluster and a heptanuclear trimolybdenum-rhodium-triiridium cluster. In addition, Publication 8 describes alkyne chemistry at a phosphine-substituted cluster and explores the impact of phosphine ligation to dimolybdenum-diiridium on optical limiting properties. Finally, Publication 9 reports a four-valence-electron-deficient butterfly tetrairidium cluster and a heptairidium cluster, together with theoretical studies of the tetrairidium cluster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of critical reviews and perspectives focussing on specific aspects of organometallic chemistry interfacing with other fields of study are provided. For this volume, the critical reviews cover topics such as the activation of "inert" carbon-hydrogen bonds, ligand design and organometallic radical species. For example, Charlie O'Hara discusses how mixed-metal compounds may perform the highly selective activation of C-H bonds and, in particular, how synergic relationships between various metals are crucial to this approach. The chemistry of a remarkable series of air-stable chiral primary phosphine ligands is discussed in some depth by Rachel Hiney, Arne Ficks, Helge M3ller-Bunz, Declan Gilheany and Lee Higham. This article focuses on the preparation of these ligands and also how they may be applied in various catalytic applications. Bas De Bruin reports on how ligand radical reactivity can be employed in synthetic organometallic chemistry and catalysis to achieve selectivity in radical-type transformations. As well as highlighting ligand-centered radical transformations in open-shell transition metals, an overview of the catalytic mechanism of Co(II)-catalysed olefin cyclopropanation is given, showing that enzyme-like cooperative metal-ligand-radical reactivity is no longer limited to real enzymes. Valuable and informative comprehensive reviews in the field of organometallic chemistry are also covered in this volume. For example, organolithium and organocuprate chemistry are reviewed by Joanna Haywood and Andrew Wheatley; aspects in Group 2 (Be-Ba) and Group 12 (Zn-Hg) compounds by Robert Less, Rebecca Melen and Dominic Wright; metal clusters by Mark Humphrey and Marie Cifuentes; and recent developments in the chemistry of the elements of Group 14 - focusing on low-coordination number compounds by Richard Layfield. This volume therefore covers many synthetic and applied aspects of modern organometallic chemistry which ought to be of interest to inorganic, organic and applied catalysis fields.

Book excerpt: On Friday, February 20, 1980, I had the pleasure to be present at the inaugural lecture of my colleague Jan Reedijk, who had just been named at the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry of Leiden University. According to tradition, the ceremony took place in the impressive Hall of the old University Academy Building. In the course of his lecture, Jan mentioned a number of recent developments in chemistry which had struck him as particularly important or interesting. Among those was the synthesis of large metal cluster compounds, and, to my luck, he showed a slide ofthe molecular structure of [PtI9(C)b]4-. (To my luck, since at traditional Leiden University it is quite unusual to show slides at such ceremonies.) This constituted my first acquaintance with this exciting new class of materials. I became immediately fascinated by this molecule, partly because of the esthetic beauty of its fivefold symmetry, partly because as a physicist it struck me that it could be visualized as an "embryonically small" metal particle, embedded in a shell of CO ligands.

Book excerpt: This book contains a series of papers and abstracts from the 7th Industry-University Cooperative Chemistry Program symposium held in the spring of 1989 at Texas A&M University. The symposium was larger than previous IUCCP symposia since it also celebrated the 25 years that had elapsed since the initial discovery by F. A. Cotton and his co-workers of the existence of metal-metal quadruple bonds. Cotton's discovery demonstrated that multiple bonding in inorganic systems is not governed by the same constraints observed in organic chemistry regarding s and p orbital involvement. The d orbitals are involved in the multiple bonding description. The quadruple bond involves considerable d orbital overlap between adjacent metal centers. Part I of this series of papers focuses upon the impact of this discovery and describes further contributions to the development of the field. Multiple metal-metal bonding now is known to permeate broad areas of transition metal chemistry. The understanding of metal-metal bonding that developed as a result of the discovery of multiple metal-metal bonding awakened a new chemistry involving metal clusters. Clusters were defined by Cotton to be species containing metal-metal bonding. Clusters in catalysis therefore seemed a logical grouping of papers in this symposium. Clusters play an every increasing role in the control of chemical reactions. Part II of this book describes some of the interesting new developments in this field. In Part III the papers examine the role clusters play in describing and understanding solid state materials.
