Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides insights into the development and usage of coal in chemical engineering. The reactivity of coal in processes such as pyrolysis, gasification, liquefaction, combustion and swelling is related to its structural properties. Using experimental findings and theoretical analysis, the book comprehensively answers three crucial issues that are fundamental to the optimization of coal chemical conversions: What is the structure of coal? How does the underlying structure determine the reactivity of different types of coal? How does the structure of coal alter during coal conversion? This book will be of interest to both individual readers and institutions involved in teaching and research into chemical engineering and energy conversion technologies. It is aimed at advanced- level undergraduate students. The text is suitable for readers with a basic knowledge of chemistry, such as first-year undergraduate general science students. Higher-level students with an in-depth understanding of the chemistry of coal will also benefit from the book. It will provide a useful reference resource for students and university-level teachers, as well as practicing engineers.

Book excerpt: Coal Science, Volume 3 presents and evaluates selected fundamental scientific areas on coal structure, reactivity, and utilization. This book describes the organic geochemistry of coal, role of oxygen functionality in coal and coal liquids reactivity, chemistry of hydrocarbon syntheses from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and chemistry of coal in carbon monoxide/water systems. Other topics discussed include intermediates and mechanisms of the FTS of hydrocarbons; synthesis of oxygenates; and structural features of vitrinite macerals. The molecular weight determination for coal derivatives; thermal reactions of oxygen compounds; and alternative methods for removing oxygen compounds from coal-derived liquids are also elaborated. This publication likewise covers the aqueous coal conversions and conversion mechanism. This volume serves as a valuable source of information and guide to scientists and researchers interested in the coal literature.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Coal The literature dealing with coal and its chemical properties is of such an extent that an exhaustive record of the facts and theories contained therein would occupy volumes. All that is attempted in this monograph is to show the chief methods by which the problems of coal-constitution have been attacked, and to outline some of the more interesting results obtained. It is hoped in this way to indicate to those desirous of carrying out research work on coal and kindred substances lines along which investigation may lead to concrete conclusions. An attempt has been made to mention all the more important papers in the bibliography, as it was felt that to anyone contemplating serious research work on coals this section should be of value. The methods described in the section on analysis are those which I have found in practice to be satisfactory, and I hope that this section will prove of value to those who have occasion to examine coals from the analysts point of view. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Coal Technology provides an overview explaining what coal is, how it came into being, what its principal physical and chemical properties are, and how it is handled or processed for particular end uses. This book is divided into two parts; the first of which focuses on coal science and the second on technology. This volume is organized into 15 chapters and begins with a brief account of the origin, formation, and distribution of coal, along with its composition, classification, and most important properties. It then turns to beneficiation and handling; combustion; and various partial or complete conversion technologies. The final chapter deals with some aspects of pollution and pollution control. This book provides fairly detailed discussions on coal chemistry, including the molecular structure of coal. The challenges and limitations of coal technology are also considered. This book is intended for scientists and engineers who are active in other fields, but who might want to bring coal within the orbit of their interests, and to advanced students of chemical and mineral engineering who are contemplating careers in coal-related endeavors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impetus for this book is twofold. First, in response to the well documented oil shocks of the 1970s there arose a resurgence of research activity in the synthetic fuels area. This book attempts to capture some of the leading edge advances which have been made over the past decade in the area of the chemistry of coal conversion. The second driving force behind this book is to jog people's memories about the fundamental truths of the energy industry, i. e. , there IS a finite amount of liquid hydrocarbons on and under the earth's surface, most of the easy to find, produce, and use liquid hydrocarbons have been exploited, and the real need continues to be for liquid hydrocarbons for use as trans portation fuels. The uncertainty is not if synthetic liquids will be needed, but rat her when they will be needed. The inability to answer that question accurately caused many of the financial and research disruptions following the double shocks of the 1970s. Since future projections can only be based upon the historical record, they cannot anticipate major disruptions such as, e. g. , discovery of huge easily producible oils fields, or, on the other side, global or regional economic disruptions such as warfare. With this level of uncertainty, then, the second impetus is to point out how much research remains to be done at a time when fiscal support for fossil fuels research in the Uni ted States is rapidly spiraling downward.
