Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schiller Gallery: Containing Characters From Schiller's Works Schiller's life itself exhibits such a continuous and unwearied struggle after perfection, as to form an illus trious example for every German. We hope that it may be said of us that, in our attempts, we have sought to render it due honor. A few words may be permitted respecting the ex planatory remarks which the author has added to the engravings, and for which he alone is responsible. He is the less able to assert that he has added any thing new respecting the poet, that he must frankly confess his ignorance of what is old and aheady written. It, has always been his preference to enjoy the poet himself, instead of studying critics and commentators and where he has found the need of assistance, he has confined him self to the admirable hints which Gervinus and Julian Schmidt have thrown out. It is not necessary here to repeat in full what he himself has reached unaided, or what he has received from others, since the_ drawing and the text will be found mutually explanatory and illustrative. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Robbers by Friedrich Schiller This play is to be regarded merely as a dramatic narrative in which, for the purpose of tracing out the innermost workings of the soul, advantage has been taken of the dramatic method, without otherwise conforming to the stringent rules of theatrical composition, or seeking the dubious advantage of stage adaptation. It must be admitted as somewhat inconsistent that three very remarkable people, whose acts are dependent on perhaps a thousand contingencies, should be completely developed within three hours, considering that it would scarcely be possible, in the ordinary course of events, that three such remarkable people should, even in twenty-four hours, fully reveal their characters to the most penetrating inquirer. A greater amount of incident is here crowded together than it was possible for me to confine within the narrow limits prescribed by Aristotle and Batteux. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. Book Synopsis Schiller: Volume One by : Friedrich Schiller
Download or read book Schiller: Volume One written by Friedrich Schiller and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-10-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes the plays The Robbers and Passion and Politics Two plays concerned with tyranny and freedom. Schiller's first play, The Robbers (1781), was written in great secrecy under the prison like conditions of Württenberg's Karlsschule: Karl, the son of a count, is disinherited through the machinations of his brother Franz, and, turning his back on a social order he finds unjust and corrupt, becomes the leader of a band of robbers. In Passion and Politics (1784), a 'bourgeoise tragedy', the love between Louise, a musician's daughter, and Ferdinand, a politician's son, crosses an unbridgeable social divide. One of the great figures in German literature, Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was one of the most significant playwright of his day, numbering among his devotees Coleridge and Carlyle. His plays are known for their originality of form, vivid stage imagery and powerful language, faithfully rendered in Robert David MacDonald's acclaimed translations.
