Book excerpt: This dissertation analyzes the character of the Peshitta of Judges by applying the methodology of James Barr described in his comprehensive study: The Typology of Literalism in Ancient Biblical Translations (Gottingen, 1979), 279-325. Based on his analysis and that of other writers such as Emmanel Tov and Sebastian Brock, a verse by verse analysis is made of Chapters One to Five of Judges, including analysis of portions of Chapters Six to Twenty-one in order to evaluate the verses studied according to modes of literalism defined by Barr and other writers. Conclusions are reached about the degree to which each verse is literal or free and those verses are compared to the corresponding verses in Targum Jonathan and the Codices Alexandrinus and Vaticanus. Some comparisons were also made with the Vulgate and the Syro-Hexaplar version. Detailed conclusions have been reached about the degree to which the verses studied are literal according to Barr's typology. A high degree of literalism is found, but some of the modes of the typology defined by Barr exhibit more freedom than others. A high degree of similarity is also found between the Peshitta and the three versions compared, with Targum Jonathan found to be more similar in a plurality of the verses of Chapters One to Four, followed by Codex Vaticanus as to all five chapters. The study also leads to conclusions about the Syriac Manuscripts that may have higher value for recovering the Urtext of the Peshitta. These conclusions are based on a few places where certain Syriac MSS follow the Masoretic Text more closely than the MSS on which the critical edition is based. These occur at points where the syntax or sense of the critical text is disordered in a way that cannot be explained based on some possible alternative Hebrew, Greek, or Aramaic MS. In those places, the alternative Syriac text can be explained based on the MT.

Because the Book of Jeremiah is so long, a quantitative analysis was valuable, showing: preservation of the sense of the Vorlage; freedom in selection of lexical equivalents even for important words such as "sin" and in making numerous additions in pursuit of precision; and a similar approach by later editors. Passages which are not represented in the translation despite their presence in the Hebrew Bible, and sometimes also in the Septuagint, are analysed, showing their value in illumination both the development of the Hebrew Bible itself from a number of earlier texts, and the precise wording of the text from which the Syriac translator worked. The strategies adopted to cope with the translation of particulary difficult Hebrew are analysed: these include taking guidance from the Septuagint, from other parts of the Hebrew Bible, and guesswork. Apart from its value to Peshitta scholars and Syriac specialists, the book is useful to biblical scholars and textual critics in general.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive examination of the Syriac Peshitta of Hosea (P-Hosea) is the first study of the Peshitta conducted via insights and methods from the discipline of Translation Studies. It uses in particular Andrew Chesterman's Causal Model and Gideon Toury's descriptive approach. Every translator leaves residue of his or her interference in the course of the translation process. This investigation analyzes that interference (seen in the form of translation shifts), categorizes it, and draws conclusions with implications for textual criticism, Translation Studies, historical reconstruction, and the history of interpretation. It accounts for every shift, no matter how minor, in comparison with the Masoretic Text as well as the relationship between the Peshitta text on the one hand, and the Septuagint, and Targum Jonathan on the other, with respect to individual textual segments. This information is presented in the form of a commentary to allow easy access to P-Hosea's solutions and behavior in context rather than in isolated examples. Concluding chapters synthesize and evaluate the data. Rather than describing the translator's behavior simplistically as either "literal" or "free," individual norms are placed on a spectrum between "adequacy" (correspondence to the source text) and "acceptability" (within the target system). P-Hosea is mostly source-oriented. The translator does not make significant adjustments from formal correspondence to the Hebrew source text and creates shifts primarily to prevent potential misunderstanding on the part of the reader. A survey of P-Hosea's unique agreements with other versions indicates that P made limited, inconsistent use of the Greek Septuagint. Readings shared with the Targum tradition, however, are due to polygenesis and common exegetical tradition. Having considered and eliminated other possible explanations for deviations from MT, the study summarizes those Hebrew variants located in P-Hosea's source text. The study concludes with a socio-historical profile of the translator.
