With nine million tons of plastic debris entering the oceans every year from the land - the equivalent of one large garbage truck full every minute - plastic in our oceans is a problem so devastating and colossal that it is easy to give up in despair, feeling there is no way to make a real difference. But Ocean Champions - A Journey into Seas of Plastic not only communicates this huge environmental problem to young children in an entertaining and educational story; it also empowers them to make a difference by influencing the adults in their lives and by taking action to become champions for our oceans. Ocean Champions is beautifully illustrated and tells a tale of two children, Kai and Morgan, who are playing on a beach and befriend Botley, a plastic bottle who is afraid of being washed into the ocean. They soon discover a dolphin tangled in fishing net and call a rescue centre for help. The rescuers arrive in the super submersible, Spirit, and thus begins a journey of discovery about the devastating effects that plastic debris is having on marine animals, either through external entanglement that injures, traps, and often drowns them or through plastic ingestion, which causes suffering and often death. Spirit also takes them to see all the ocean plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Along the way the children learn why our oceans are so important, how plastic gets into the oceans and what happens to it there, why marine animals mistake plastic for food, and more. The story presents the sad facts in a way that doesn't overwhelm. The child characters learn and accept and then go on to do something about plastic in our oceans, inspiring readers to also become agents of change. The addendum provides more information, including actions to reduce our use of plastic, which gives readers immediate ways to start helping. The oceanchampions.ca website is designed to be an extension of the book and includes additional information about plastic and our oceans, teaching aids that contain lots of fun activities, success stories, student projects, and 'in the news' posts.

In the 2nd Age of the Earth Realm, fifty years after the Immortal's War, there is a darkness that is growing stronger as the light of hope slowly fades. In a world without heroes, if the darkness consumes the Earth Realm, the Dark Immortals will reign supreme over the entire cosmos. Those who continue to fight to preserve the light of hope are told of a prophecy that speaks of an Immortal's offspring, a demi-immortal, born on the Holy Day when the light shines the longest, possessing the unlimited power of the Champion of Light. It is told that the Champion of Light will rise to defeat the minions of darkness and restore the light of hope back into the hearts of hopeless mortals. Book I begins the saga of the Champion of Light's journey in becoming the hero who will challenge the Dark Immortals to maintain the cosmic balance between good and evil; light and darkness.

Book excerpt: The Vikings roamed and raided the known world, always returning to their beautiful, sacred realm. Now, a young Christian woman is forced into this land—by a Viking lord with a secret he dares not reveal . . . From Istanbul to Ireland, Rorik of Vargfjell is legendary for the battles he has fought, the wealth he has amassed, and the women he has loved. So when a Northumbrian Earl refuses to pay tribute, and even burns one of Rorik’s ships, the Viking seizes the earl’s daughter—and will hold her for ransom. Or so was his plan. At home in Northumbria, Elfwynn had experienced agonizing losses—including the peaceful world she was born into. Now she stands face to face with a towering, chiseled Viking in his wondrous kingdom. With her gift of music, her unworldly beauty and strange courage, Elfwynn will prove to be very different than any woman Rorik has known. And for a man who lords over sea and land, what she demands will be the greatest challenge of all . . . “Lord of the Mountains will mesmerize you from the first page . . . Jarema’s in-depth knowledge of Norwegian customs makes this story believable.” —RT Book Reviews, 4 stars

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Beamish, a former editor at The Surfer’s Journal, envisioned a low-tech, self-reliant exploration for surf along the coast of North America, using primarily clothes and instruments available to his ancestors, and the 18-foot boat he would build by hand in his garage. How the vision met reality – and how the two came to shape each other – places Voyage of the Cormorant in the great American tradition of tales of life at sea, and what it has to teach us.
