Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Starfishes of the Hawaiian Islands I have included keys, and in a chapter at the end of the article have listed the principal technical terms; but the general naturalist will find, as a rule, that the figures of the whole animal are a quicker and surer means of identification. Unfortunately a number of the shallow-water species can not be figured. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cephalopods of the Northeastern Coast of America The early literature of natural history has, from very remote times, contained allusions to huge species of Cephalopods, often accompanied by more or less fabulous and usually exaggerated descriptions of the creatures* In a few instances figures were attempted which were largely indebted to the imagination of their authors for their more striking peculiarities. In recent times, many more accurate observers have confirmed the existence of such monsters, and several fragments have found their way into European museums. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cephalopods of the Philippine Islands This report is based mostly on the extensive collections of cephalo pods made by the United States Fisheries steamer Albatross between December 1907 and September 1909 in the Philippine Islands and adjacent seas, and deposited in the United States National Museum. The Philippine cruise was under the direction of Dr. Hugh M. Smith, then Deputy Commissioner of Fisheries. The late Dr. Paul Bartsch, formerly Curator of Mollusks, us. National Museum, made many of the cephalopod collections and I am greatly indebted to him and his assistants for the accurate labeling of the collections and the numerous supplementary notes which have proved invaluable during this study. Collections of cephalopods taken at numerous trawling and dredging stations were extensively supplemented by shore collections made both by hand and by shore seines. In addition several valuable specimens were obtained from local fish markets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of Recent Cephalopoda: Supplement, 1887-96 The new forms are in nearly all cases adequately described, and in the majority of instances figured with sufficient detail, so that there has been comparatively little room for doubt as to their claim to specific distinction. In cases of uncertainty I have adhered to the principle, mentioned in my previous list, of not registering species as identical without very strong evidence. In the case of a Catalogue like the present, which makes no pretensions to monographic completeness, less harm is done by letting two names stand side by side than by hastily entering them as synonymous. Most of the novelties are from the eastern seas, and are due to the investigations of Dr Ortmann into the Japanese forms, of the late Dr Brock, whose untimely death deprived zoological science of a promising worker in this interest ing field, and of Mr Goodrich, who has reported upon the collections in the Calcutta Museum. It is, however, no injustice to these workers to say that the most important systematic work on the Cephalopoda which has appeared in recent years is the Monograph which Dr J atta has published in the Fauna and Flora of the Gulf of Naples. It is the result of more than ten years work, and is based upon abundant material prepared with all the resources which have rendered the Naples station famous all over the world. The descriptions are careful and elaborate, and there is a wealth of illustrations, which should render it impossible in future to mistake any of the species there enumerated. The head is principally composed of the large lateral prominent eyes; the circum ference of the cornea is marked with a circle of closely approximated large dark spots. Bruce Saunders Department of Geology Bryn Mawr College Bryn Mawr PA 19010 wsaunder@brynmawr. edu Neil H. Landman Division of Paleontology American Museum of Natural History New York, New York 10024 landman@amnh. org When Nautilus: Biology and Paleobiology of a Living Fossil was published in 1987, it marked a milestone in cross-disciplinary collaboration. More than half of the contributing authors (36/65) were paleontologists, many of whom were collaborating with neontological counterparts. Their interest in studying this reclusive, poorly known animal was being driven by a search for clues to the mode of life and natural history of the once dominant shelled cephalopods, through study of the sole surviving genus. At the same time, Nautilus offered an opportunity for neontologists to look at a fundamentally different, phylogenetically basal member of the extant Cephalopoda. It was a w- win situation, combining paleontological deep-time perspectives, old fashioned expeditionary zeal, traditional biological approaches and new techniques. The results were cross-fertilized investigations in such disparate fields as ecology, functional morphology, taphonomy, genetics, phylogeny, locomotive dynamics, etc. As one reviewer of the xxxvi Introduction xxxvii book noted, Nautilus had gone from being one of the least known to one of the best understood of living cephalopods.

Challenger During the Years 1873-76 ON the return of the Challenger the whole collection of Cephalopoda was placed by Sir Wyville Thomson in the hands of Professor Huxley for examination and description, and it will be regretted by all naturalists that this Report was not prepared by that eminent master in the science of comparative anatomy. Professor Huxley's numerous engagements, however, prevented him from undertaking more than the investigation of the single specimen of Spirula which was obtained by the Expedition. The remainder of the collection was offered to me by Mr. John Murray in the autumn of 1882, and within the first few weeks of 1883 I received the specimens from South Kensington. Since that period almost all my spare time has been occupied in the work of drawing up the present Report.
