Bruce Saunders Department of Geology Bryn Mawr College Bryn Mawr PA 19010 wsaunder@brynmawr. edu Neil H. Landman Division of Paleontology American Museum of Natural History New York, New York 10024 landman@amnh. org When Nautilus: Biology and Paleobiology of a Living Fossil was published in 1987, it marked a milestone in cross-disciplinary collaboration. More than half of the contributing authors (36/65) were paleontologists, many of whom were collaborating with neontological counterparts. Their interest in studying this reclusive, poorly known animal was being driven by a search for clues to the mode of life and natural history of the once dominant shelled cephalopods, through study of the sole surviving genus. At the same time, Nautilus offered an opportunity for neontologists to look at a fundamentally different, phylogenetically basal member of the extant Cephalopoda. It was a w- win situation, combining paleontological deep-time perspectives, old fashioned expeditionary zeal, traditional biological approaches and new techniques. The results were cross-fertilized investigations in such disparate fields as ecology, functional morphology, taphonomy, genetics, phylogeny, locomotive dynamics, etc. As one reviewer of the xxxvi Introduction xxxvii book noted, Nautilus had gone from being one of the least known to one of the best understood of living cephalopods.

Book Synopsis Nautilus to Columbia by : James C. Goodall
Download or read book Nautilus to Columbia written by James C. Goodall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly illustrated history of the US Navy's nuclear submarine program, from the postwar years to the 2020 Columbia-class SSBNs. James C. Goodall covers the origins, design and development of the US Navy's fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. This program was developed under the command of Hiram G. Rickover, the “Father of the Nuclear Navy” who oversaw the commissioning of the very first nuclear-powered attack submarine, the USS Nautilus (SSN 571) in 1952. This was a truly revolutionary design. Until the advent of nuclear power, the world's submarine fleets traveled on the surface at night to charge their batteries, and only dove below the surface when enemy ships or planes were spotted. With the development of the USS Nautilus, the US Navy now had the ability to stay submerged for not just hours or days, but to hide out of harm's way for weeks or months at a time This highly illustrated book covers all of the 220+ submarine hulls built and delivered to the US Navy from the USS Nautilus through to the Navy's newest class of submarine, the Columbia class SSBNs. The story of the Nuclear Navy from its origins up to the present day is told through more than 1,300 images from official and archive sources, as well as the author's own personal collection, some of which have never been published before.

Download or read book Ice Station Nautilus written by Rick Campbell and published by Canelo. This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trapped in the frozen depths, and they’re running out of time... Russia's new ballistic missile submarine is being deployed on its first patrol while America's newest fast-attack submarine, North Dakota, is assigned to trail it and collect intel. As the Russian submarine heads under the polar ice cap, its sonar reveals the trailing American sub and causes the Russians to begin a radical evasive maneuver. This fails and the submarines collide, sending both to the bottom. The Americans send a new submarine and a SEAL team to establish a camp and stage a rescue. But the Russian special forces team is also there, with far more sinister motives. As the men in the North Dakota struggle to survive, the SEAL team battles for possession of the submarine, and for their lives. Rick Campbell's Ice Station Nautilus is an epic battle above and below the ice, perfect for fans of Tom Clancy, Stephen Coonts and James Deegan.

Book Synopsis The Moon in the Nautilus Shell by : Daniel Botkin
Download or read book The Moon in the Nautilus Shell written by Daniel Botkin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we keep talking about so many environmental problems and rarely solve any? If these are scientific issues, then why can't scientists solve them or at least agree on what to do? In his new book, The Moon in the Nautilus Shell, ecologist Daniel Botkin explains why. For one thing, although we live in a world of constantly changing environments and talk a lot about climate change, most of our environmental laws, policies, and scientific premises are based on the idea that the environment is constant, never changing, except when people affect it. For another, we have lost contact with nature in personal ways. Disconnected from our surroundings, we lack the deep understanding and feelings about the environment to make meaningful judgments. The environment has become just another one of those special interests that interferes with our lives. Poised to be a core text of the twenty-first century environmental movement, The Moon in the Nautilus Shell challenges us to think critically about our role in nature.
