Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centenary of the Baptists in Nova Scotia: A Discourse Delivered at Hillsburgh, June 10, 1860 By whatever method it may be thought advisable to embody in action the principles of the New Testament in regard to the introduction Of members to the church, it is certain that even under the most favourable circumstances young converts will be generally deficient in knowledge. It is to be expected also that they will be tried by manifold doubts and difliculties, the removal of which requires a skilful hand. And they have to be initiated into new duties, and watched over in discharging them. All this necessitates assiduous, systematic training. For want Of such training many have become Weak and sickly, or have dwindled into formal drones, Of whom it would be well if it could be always affirmed that they are harmless. Here is special work for the pastor, or, if his engagements positive; ly prevent him from undertaking it (which ought not to be the case), for some judicious deacon or other experienced mem ber Of the church. If, during the first year of their religious history, the newly admitted converts were brought together Once a week by themselves, for purposes of appropriate teach ing and discipline, it cannot be doubted that'the results would be extensively beneficial, and that the aggressions of the church upon the world would become more effective. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maritime Calvinistic Baptist piety emerged from a fusion of revivalism and conversion, and introduced dramatic baptisms by immersion. Rapid Baptist growth was one force leading Anglicans, Methodists, and Presbyterians to initiate a spiritual polemical exchange over baptism. By examining the lives and work of six Baptist preachers and theologians, Into Deep Waters illuminates the ways in which the second generation of Baptist preachers not only defended their tradition in lively debates but argued for a broadly based understanding of their spirituality and ministry, rooted in the practice of the Fathers. In an age when denominational identities in North America are often portrayed as ineffectual, Into Deep Waters is a timely reminder that religious traditions can adapt, change, and inspire renewal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-ever comprehensive book written on early English immigration to Canada, Planters, Paupers, and Pioneers introduces a series of three titles on The English in Canada. Focusing on factors that brought the English to Atlantic Canada, it traces the English arrivals to their various settlements in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland, and considers their reasons for leaving their homeland. Who were they? When did they arrive? Were they successful? What was their lasting impact? Drawing on wide-ranging documentary sources, including passenger lists, newspaper shipping reports, and the wealth of material to be found in English county record offices and in Canadian national and provincial archives, the book provides extensive details of the immigrants and their settlements and gives details of more than 700 Atlantic crossings — essential reading for individuals wishing to trace English and Canadian family links or to deepen understanding of the emigration process.

Sparks traces the history of African Baptists in North America, particularly Nova Scotia, in Reclaiming the Oral Tradition of the African Baptist Church. His goal is to recapture and reclaim the oral tradition that once shaped the theology and spiritual practices of the African Baptist Church in its earliest days. Mr. Sparks defines “oral” as “the practices, customs, beliefs, and folkways of a people and community that are passed on by word-of-mouth over several generations.” As opposed to a collection of items in a catechism of religious and doctrinal statements, oral tradition looks more to the heart and the conversion experience. For example, to obtain salvation, “candidates” are to withdraw to a quiet place to seek the Lord in prayer, and wait to hear from God. They’re expected to persist until they see the blood of Jesus, which is central to salvation in the oral tradition. Running throughout the text are various biblical passages, historical sources, and theological themes that give weight, substance, and relevance to a once dynamic tradition. Mr. Sparks makes the argument that the present moral and spiritual state of the African Baptist Church is the direct result of the loss and abandonment of its religious heritage and oral tradition. It calls, therefore, for a return to that tradition: a call to a renewed focus on salvation, revival, restoration, and hope!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptists are a major group of Christians with a worldwide presence. Originating in the English Puritan-Separatist tradition of the 17th century, Baptists proliferated in North America, and through missionary work from England, Europe, and North America, they have established churches, associations, unions, missions, and alliances in virtually every country. They are among the most highly motivated evangelists of the Christian gospel, employing at present in excess of 7,000 domestic and overseas missionaries. Important characteristics of the Baptists across their history are: the authority of the Scriptures, individual accountability before God, the priority of religious experience, religious liberty, separation of church and state, congregational independence, and a concern for the social implications of the gospel. Baptists recognize a twofold ministry (deacons and pastors) or a threefold order (deacons, elders, pastors). Historical Dictionary of the Baptists, Third Edition expands upon the second edition with an updated chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important events, doctrines, and the church founders, leaders, and other prominent figures who have made notable contributions.
