Book excerpt: "Altogether superb; a worthy memorial to the victims of two and a half centuries past."--Kirkus Reviews, starred review In 1755, New England troops embarked on a "great and noble scheme" to expel 18,000 French-speaking Acadians ("the neutral French") from Nova Scotia, killing thousands, separating innumerable families, and driving many into forests where they waged a desperate guerrilla resistance. The right of neutrality; to live in peace from the imperial wars waged between France and England; had been one of the founding values of Acadia; its settlers traded and intermarried freely with native Mikmaq Indians and English Protestants alike. But the Acadians' refusal to swear unconditional allegiance to the British Crown in the mid-eighteenth century gave New Englanders, who had long coveted Nova Scotia's fertile farmland, pretense enough to launch a campaign of ethnic cleansing on a massive scale. John Mack Faragher draws on original research to weave 150 years of history into a gripping narrative of both the civilization of Acadia and the British plot to destroy it.

Book excerpt: The phenomenal development of writing and literary creation among the francophone communities of eastern Canada has gone largely unnoticed and unprobed outside the fragmented land of Acadia. Writing Acadia attempts for the first time to observe from a distance the invention of literature in oral Acadia, and to interpret, assess and order the manifold manifestations of the transition from epic story-telling to writing as a means of nation-building. Having begun to write, modern Acadia has truly (re)written herself into existence, an existence now threatened by postmodern unwriting of literature. Destined not only for specialists but also and especially for readers with a general interest in literature, including students of all levels, Writing Acadia presents generous samples of Acadian poetry, drama and prose, with accompanying English translations.

Resting on this is a thick stratum of amygdaloid trap, veined with tinted gypsum and dotted with silicates of great variety and beauty, among which may be found chalcedony, jasper, opal, agate and other precious 'stones. Supported upon this gem-bespangled foundation, rises erect nearly two hundred feet of dark green crystalline, columnar, basaltic trap, all crowned with shrubbery and evergreen woodsof ancient growth, the whole cliff resembling ruins of some colossal art structure adorned by time and decorated by decay. This majestic bluff is wholly, except the sand stone base, of volcanic origin, being the eastern extremity of a long ridge of trappean rock formed by an ancient current of molten stone or lava, erupted through the earth's crust and flow ing over and cooling upon the red sandstone sea bottom, on which the whole ridge now rests. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first work devoted exclusively to Acadians in Nova Scotia, this book presents a thorough study of Acadian history from the earliest days of French settlement to present-day Acadian communities. Authors Sally Ross and Alphonse Deveau draw on original seventeenth-century texts, as well as up-to-date sources. They examine the history of the Expulsion--the Grand Dérangement--that began in 1755, and trace the return of the Acadians and their resettlement in seven areas of the province. The authors highlight the distinct features that have developed within these different regions of Nova Scotia and discuss the choices and challenges faced by Acadians today: the linguistic assimilation and preservation of a distinct culture against pressures from the mainstream culture. Acadians of Nova Scotia won the 1993 Dartmouth Book Award for non-fiction and the 1993 Evelyn Richardson Memorial Literary Prize for non-fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The former French colony of Acadia—permanently renamed Nova Scotia by the British when they began an ambitious occupation of the territory in 1710—witnessed one of the bitterest struggles in the British empire. Whereas in its other North American colonies Britain assumed it could garner the sympathies of fellow Europeans against the native peoples, in Nova Scotia nothing was further from the truth. The Mi'kmaq, the native local population, and the Acadians, descendants of the original French settlers, had coexisted for more than a hundred years prior to the British conquest, and their friendships, family ties, common Catholic religion, and commercial relationships proved resistant to British-enforced change. Unable to seize satisfactory political control over the region, despite numerous efforts at separating the Acadians and Mi'kmaq, the authorities took drastic steps in the 1750s, forcibly deporting the Acadians to other British colonies and systematically decimating the remaining native population. The story of the removal of the Acadians, some of whose descendants are the Cajuns of Louisiana, and the subsequent oppression of the Mi'kmaq has never been completely told. In this first comprehensive history of the events leading up to the ultimate break-up of Nova Scotian society, Geoffrey Plank skillfully unravels the complex relationships of all of the groups involved, establishing the strong bonds between the Mi'kmaq and Acadians as well as the frustration of the British administrators that led to the Acadian removal, culminating in one of the most infamous events in North American history.
