Book excerpt: Situated at the intersection between medical humanities, aging studies, autobiographical studies, disability studies and ethic studies, this book explores the fascination of centenarians' autobiographies for humanites research. It can be argued that the growing presence of centenarians' autobiographies on book markets across the globe may by rooted in the public's desire for positive images of aging, in contrast to the image of inevitable decay.

He is the son of English immigrants James and Sarah Clarke and was born in the midst of the catastrophic 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. He sojourns over a hundred years of life, bringing cataclysmic change to a historic period of American history. From decade to decade, Andrew finds that life only has meaning when trusting God to bring hope and purpose to devastating situations. The Centenarian speaks to every person who is searching for purpose and meaning in life. These memoirs challenge the reader to look inward and deal with loss, the value of meaningful relationships, and the aging process. This historically accurate account brings hope to every reader who is willing to feel the pain and heartache of Mr. Clarke, the centenarian who finds joy and fulfillment at every turn in his lifelong journey. The Centenarian will make you laugh and cry. Hope and joy will fill your spirit as you journey with the centenarian.

Book excerpt: The book explores the multifaceted quest for longevity, delving deeply into the various factors that contribute to living a prolonged, healthy life beyond the average lifespan. 1. The Quest for Longevity: Longevity is not merely about living longer; it encompasses genetics, lifestyle, environment, and medical advancements, all driven by a fundamental human drive to thrive and leave a lasting legacy. It symbolizes resilience, wisdom, and a deeper significance beyond mere numbers. 2. Historical Perspectives on Long Life: The fascination with longevity dates back to ancient Chinese, Indian, and Greek civilizations, which pursued immortality through alchemy, diet, and lifestyle. This pursuit evolved with the Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, which brought scientific methods and increased life expectancy. Modern advancements continue to unlock the mysteries of human longevity. 3. The Significance of Reaching a Century: Reaching 100 years old is seen as a mark of a resilient and wise life. Centenarians challenge traditional views on aging, retirement, and healthcare, reflecting societal progress in medical science and life quality. They inspire hope and necessitate new approaches to supporting the elderly. 4. Global Variations in Lifespan: Lifespan varies globally due to socioeconomic disparities, cultural practices, and regional lifestyles. Some 'longevity hotspots' boast high numbers of centenarians, attributed to beneficial lifestyle and social practices. Globalization and the spread of medical knowledge are reshaping longevity patterns around the world. 5. Biological Versus Environmental Factors: Both genetics and environmental factors like diet, exercise, and social interactions play critical roles in longevity. Understanding the balance between these influences offers avenues for tailored interventions to promote healthy aging and prevent diseases. 6. Modern Science and the Pursuit of Extended Life: Modern science is harnessing genomics, regenerative medicine, and advanced technologies like AI and machine learning to extend human life. Personalization in medicine and targeted interventions are making significant strides towards understanding and enhancing longevity. Overall, the book underscores the complex interplay of historical, biological, environmental, and modern technological factors in the human quest for a longer, healthier life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late seventeenth century Wala emerged as a small state in what is now northwestern Ghana. Its creation involved on the one hand warrior groups of Mande, Dagomba and Mamprusi origins, and on the other hand scholars from the centres of Muslim learning on the Middle Niger. Ivor Wilks traces the history of Wala from its beginnings to the present, paying particular attention to relations between the Muslim and non-Muslim elements in its population. He also examines the impact of Zabarima, Samorian, British and French intrusions into Wala affairs. By the use of orally transmitted traditions and recensions of these in Arabic and Hausa, he is able to show how the Wala themselves view their past. Wala is periodically convulsed by crises often resulting in communal violence. He suggests that the policy maker involved in the region's political problems needs a sound knowledge of Wala history and an understanding of the deeper structures of Wala society, especially in the context of official support for decentralization.

Book excerpt: William Stone died on 10 January 2009 aged 108. He received a hero's funeral. Born in rural Devon, he joined the navy during the First World War, travelled the globe just before the British Empire's light began to fade and saw action in some of the most significant sea battles of the Second World War. Afterwards, he returned to Devon to run a barber's shop, an altogether more peaceable existence. As time passed, he became one of a dwindling number of men still alive who had served in the Great War. This meant that for some of the most momentous anniversaries clocked up recently - including the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War - William was a guest of honour. This autobiography bridges two wars and encompasses the remarkable episodes and adventures. It was an ordinary life lived in extraordinary times. He died at a time when the navy is attempting to embrace new ships that bear scant resemblance to those that William knew and face the challenges of a world that shrinks with every bold technological advance. His was a different kind of boldness. This is his astonishing story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faust has been called the fundamental icon of Western culture, and Goethe's inexhaustible poetic drama is the centrepiece of its tradition in literature, music and art. In recent years, this play has experienced something of a renaissance, with a surge of studies, theatre productions, press coverage and public discussions. Reflecting this renewed interest, leading Goethe scholars in this volume explore the play's striking modernity within its theatrical framework. The chapters present new aspects such as the virtuality of Faust, the music drama, the modernization of evil, Faust's blindness, the gay Mephistopheles, classic beauty and horror as phantasmagoria, and Goethe's anticipation of modern science, economics and ecology. The book contains an illustrated section on Faust in modern performance, with contributions by renowned directors, critics and dramaturges, and a major interview with Peter Stein, director of the uncut 'millennium production' of Expo 2000.
