Book excerpt: Psychoanalytic work with socially traumatised patients is an increasingly popular vocation, but remains extremely demanding and little covered in the literature. In Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony, a range of contributors draw upon their own clinical work, and on research findings from work with seriously disturbed Holocaust survivors, to illuminate how best to conduct clinical work with such patients in order to maximise the chances of a positive outcome, and to reflect transferred trauma for the clinician. Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony closely examines the phenomenology of destruction inherent in the discourse of extreme traumatization, focusing on a particular case study: the recording of video testimonies from a group of extremely traumatized, chronically hospitalized Holocaust survivors in psychiatric institutions in Israel. This case study demonstrates how society reacts to unwanted memories, in media, history, and psychoanalysis – but it also shows how psychotherapists and researchers try to approach the buried memories of the survivors, through being receptive to shattered life narratives. Questions of bearing witness, testimony, the role of denial, and the impact of traumatic narrative on society and subsequent generations are explored. A central thread of this book is the unconscious countertransference resistance to the trauma discourse, which manifests itself in arenas that are widely apart, such as genocide denial, the "disappearance" of the hospitalized Holocaust survivors and of their life stories, mishearing their testimonies and ultimately refusing them the diagnosis of "traumatic psychosis". Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony provides an essential, multidisciplinary guide to working psychoanalytically with severely traumatised patients. It will appeal to psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychotherapists and trauma studies therapists.

Despite the high level of specialisation required for remaining internationally competitive in cutting-edge research, physics at TU Vienna nevertheless covers a remarkably broad range of topics that can be roughly divided into three core areas: the physics of matter, physical technology and fundamental interactions. This volume is intended to give the non-specialised reader an impression of the outstanding research and teaching done at the Faculty of Physics.

Book excerpt: Since the mid-nineties, contemporary art has been booming like never before. There is more of everything--more artists, more collectors, more galleries, more art fairs, more museums, more biennials, more interest, more industry, more pop, more hype. Some art professionals feel prompted by all this to reach for the revolvers of cultural pessimism: Mass Stupidity Is Killing Great Art! Others--often the same people a short while later--defect with all the greater abandon to the alleged enemy. The entrenched battle between defenders of art's autonomy and champions of its merging with entertainment culture continues. There is more of everything, with one exception: criteria. Criteria with which the art of the moment can be understood, judged, praised and, if need be, damned--without getting bogged down in this eternal trench warfare. In All of a Sudden: Things that Matter in Contemporary Art, Jörg Heiser provides a sharp summary of contemporary art since Marcel Duchamp. Using many artworks as example, the author shows that art is more than just a randomly chosen cultural field of activity in which to acquire a little specialist knowledge to show off with. "When it's good," he claims, "art hits where it hurts, striking at the heart of an ossified status quo by which it itself was brought forth. Perhaps this is something art since Modernism has in common with slapstick. Instead of just aiming to shock and outrage, it shows authority losing its grip. Instead of inflating itself, it deflates the pompous in the name of art." The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung finds the book "astonishingly enlightening." The Frankfurter Rundschau praises Heiser for finally opening the eyes of his readers--something many of his colleagues have been unable to do. Jörg Heiser (*1968) lives in Berlin. He is co-editor of frieze magazine, writes for the national daily Süddeutsche Zeitung, and is a frequent contributor to art catalogues and publications. He curated the exhibitions "Romantic Conceptualism" (2007, Kunsthalle Nürnberg, BAWAG Foundation Vienna) and "Funky Lessons" (2004/2005, BüroFriedrich Berlin, BAWAG Foundation Vienna).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Reader, When we asked the beloved award-winning comedian and actor Robert Klein to write a book, you can imagine our utter surprise when he told us that he wanted to write about sixth-century Chinese pottery. Thankfully, he hit a creative brick wall (since he doesn't really know anything about pottery from China or anywhere else). Then came similar failures to write books about sea turtles, circumnavigation of the globe, building jet engines at home, the sociology of chickens, or fungi of the skin. Luckily, Mr. Klein's paramount concern was the consumer. He knew that if we, his publishers, were going to boldly ask you to purchase his book (see above for price), he would have to write something so good, so worthwhile, so meaningful as to make you want to send additional money to your bookseller in gratitude for having allowed you to partake in this reading experience. So Mr. Klein set out to write about what he knows best: himself. This book is about the adventures of a child who becomes a young man: how he thinks and dreams and lusts and fears and laughs and handles adversity. From the beginning of his distinguished career as a comedian, Robert Klein established himself as a pioneer in observational humor and razor-sharp routines that are infectiously funny. Now -- for the first time -- Klein brings his trademark humor and honesty to the printed page. In this portrait of a comic as a young man, Klein takes us back to the people and streets of his Bronx neighborhood, the eccentric cast of characters in the Catskills hotels and bungalow colonies where he worked, the college dorms where he received more than an academic education, the 1964 World's Fair where he fell in love, New York City and Chicago in the 1960s as he developed his talent, and Los Angeles just as he was about to embark on a show business career. Throughout, Klein reveals the hilarity of growing up and explores the mysteries and his own foibles in sex and relationships. He recounts with wit and poignancy losing his virginity with a prostitute, bringing home a German girlfriend to his Jewish family, and the amorous adventures of the busboy he once was. With an ego more fragile than Chinese pottery, Robert Klein has written a funny and evocative coming-of-age memoir -- well worth the price (if we say so ourselves). Enjoy. All the best, The Publisher

Your band, separated from its caravan during a sandstorm, stumbles upon the ancient ruins of a city, mostly buried in the sands. One of the structures, a prominent step pyramid, juts above the sandy wastes, beckoning for exploration. There must be untold riches secluded inside its dusty halls and crypts. But, more importantly, you desperately hope there is water, food, and relief from the unrelenting sun to be found therein. For without those basic necessities, your band will succumb not to some fell beast, but this harsh environment instead. Onward, as all heroes wish to meet their end while swinging a sword or unleashing arcane magic! So, check your weapons, adjust your armor, and inventory your precious remaining food and water supplies. High adventure awaits in the underground chambers and tiers of a pyramid covered by the sands of time. But what of the peculiar masked humans who rule the upper levels of the pyramid? And what of the dark master that rules these humans from the lower levels of the forsaken halls? An adventure inspired by the classic pulp stories such as Robert E. Howard's famous Conan story Red Nails. This tome is an homage to the original dungeon crawl and sandbox setting first explored decades ago as B4: The Lost City. Herein, you will find high-quality scans of the original Basic edition adventure module, plus commentary by a variety of gaming luminaries. This includes an interview with Harold Johnson, the module's original developer, who also discusses his work on playtesting, Dragonlance, and other TSR titles. Also, herein is a full fifth edition conversion of the original adventure as well as brand new additional dungeons, such as the fully developed lower pyramid, additional details on the Lost City itself, and the dreaded Lower Catacombs. Although converted for the most recent edition, this material is presented in a distinct early 1980s style, tone, and presentation. This is the perfect setting for a fully playable fifth edition mini-campaign, starting at 1st level and reaching all the way up 7th level or beyond. Made in the USA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the relationship between art and pop music over the last fifty years. Why did Andy Warhol decide to enter the music business by producing the Velvet Underground, and what did the band expect to gain in return? What made Yoko Ono use the skills she developed in the artistic avant-garde in pop music, and what drew John Lennon, in turn, to visual art? Why, in 1982, did Joseph Beuys record the pop single “Sonne statt Reagan,” and why, around the same time did, West German artists such as Michaela Melián move into pop music? In Double Lives in Art and Pop Music, Jörg Heiser argues that context shifting between art and pop music is an attempt to find solutions for contradictions faced in one field of cultural production. Heiser looks closely at the careers of artists and pop musicians who work in both fields professionally. The seeming acceptance and effortlessness today of current border crossings can be deceptive, since they might be serving vested economic or ideological interests. Exploring a pop and art history of more than fifty years, Heiser shows that those leading double lives in art and pop music may often be best able to detect these vested interests while he points toward radical alternatives.
