Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cause of the Ice Age and of Geological Climates Before entering further into this discussion, it may not be out of place to briefly review the principal theories advanced to account for the Ice Age. It will be seen that physicists and astronomers have vied with geologists in the diligence of this search for the cause of this age, and their minds have been as fertile in the number of causes assigned as the true one. Not one of all the causes suggested has been sustained by argument without a flaw in the reasoning, and no demonstration has been made which has carried conviction to the scientific world. It would not be instructive to attempt to review all of the theories which have been urged The leading ones only will be briefly mentioned. Download or read book Ice Ages written by Joseph Mccabe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ice Ages: The Story of the Earth's Revolutions IN two earlier little works (the A B C of Evolution and The Evolution of Civilization), of the same very modest proportions as this, I have given an outline of the story of Evolution. It is clear from the large circulation of these simple manuals that they have met a very real want. A good proportion of the workers, for whom in particular I write, feel that science means a new and mighty mental power in the world. They are asking if its broad teaching about man and the universe cannot be made plain to them without the use of learned words which they have not time to study, and without masses of detail which only tire them. Book Synopsis The North Pole, the Great Ice Age, and the Deluge by : William Brown Galloway
Download or read book The North Pole, the Great Ice Age, and the Deluge written by William Brown Galloway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Pole, the Great Ice Age, and the Deluge: With an Appendix on the Differing Magnetic Phenomena of the South But all those mountains put together, which the giants upheaved, were a mere trifle to this; and the Enipeus was but as a dewdrop to the Mississippi. And all this merely to account for how the intense cold was to be got, sufficient to freeze up the world; all called out in that new internecine combat of giant glacial theorists, whose whole speculation is only a conjectutal substitute for' the universal deluge of scripture and of Christian faith, and of the still lingering vestiges of its memory among all nations. No doubt the Almighty power of God was sufficient for Dr. Hull, but we have no right to presume upon it to back up philosophical speculations. If it be thought that the ocean soundings prove the existence of a former coast line on the east of America rela tively higher than the present, the explanation must be sought only by reasonable deduction from known facts of nature, and in accordance with its laws. The Most High hath ordered all things by measure and number and weight. He hath weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance. And this not only in regard to the heaviest things. Book Synopsis The Zonal-Belt Hypothesis by : Joseph T. Wheeler
Download or read book The Zonal-Belt Hypothesis written by Joseph T. Wheeler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Zonal-Belt Hypothesis: A New Explanation of the Cause of the Ice Ages The nature of the evidence demonstrates that these belts were potent factors in producing' the climatic changes which marked the various geologic periods. They were the cause of the Ice ages. Primitive man saw the last remnants of these strange sights in the sky, and the echo of his thought in the form of mythology has sounded down through the lapse of the centuries. Facts cannot be ignored. Agassiz demonstrated that the till and boulder deposits scattered over the mantle rock of northern Europe and North America were the product of glacier action, but though the fact of the existence of great continental ice - sheets was established, the cause has remained up to the present date a scientific mystery. Now, in presenting the belted-canopy or zonal-ring hypothesis the cause or causes which brought them into exist ence is of secondary importance. The all-important matter is to establish their actuality. Nevertheless, in order to present the argument in a consecutive form, the author under takes in the opening chapters to show how the belts could have been brought into existence. This portion of the work, however, may be considered as merely tentative, and if he has failed in this particular, it in nowise compromises the main issue.
