Book Synopsis God and Gods in the Deuteronomistic History by : Connie Carvalho
Download or read book God and Gods in the Deuteronomistic History written by Connie Carvalho and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like other constructs in biblical studies, the Deuteronomistic History has come under scrutiny in the twenty-first century. The books beginning with Joshua and concluding with 2 Kings were thought to be, at their core, a unified explication of Israel's demise in the Deuteronomistic terms of sin and its consequences. Current scholarship views these books as more disparate and influenced by a number of different texts, not limited to Deuteronomy. God and Gods in the Deuteronomistic History exemplifies the latest research on these Hebrew Scriptures. Each study focuses on the questions of how God is disclosed in Israel's history. Contributors look at the topic in a single book to bring forth the richness and variety of the deity's depictions. The results show an array of understandings about the divine figure Yhwh, whose titles include El, El the Living, and Yhwh God in heaven, to name but a few. A strength of this volume is the metriculous analysis of Mesopotamian and West Semitic sources, expressed both textually and in material culture. The biblical writers adopted and adapted these ancient Near Eastern sources to create various pictures of God in the Deuteronomistic History, at times mirroring the deities of the so-called idolatrous religions. This book brings forth portrayals of Israel's God as well as other regional deities in their contiguity and complexity, across the Deuteronomistic History. Book jacket.

Download or read book Covenant and Communion written by Scott W. Hahn and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger's election as Pope Benedict XVI brought a world-class biblical theologian to the papacy. There is an intensely biblical quality to his pastoral teaching and he has demonstrated a keen concern for the authentic interpretation of sacred Scripture. Here a foremost interpreter of Catholic thought and life offers a probing look at Benedict's biblical theology and provides a clear and concise introduction to his life and work. Bestselling author and theologian Scott Hahn argues that the heart of Benedict's theology is salvation history and the Bible and shows how Benedict accepts historical criticism but recognizes its limits. The author also explains how Benedict reads the overall narrative of Scripture and how he puts it to work in theology, liturgy, and Christian discipleship.

Book Synopsis Biblical Theology of the Old and New Testaments by : Brevard S. Childs
Download or read book Biblical Theology of the Old and New Testaments written by Brevard S. Childs and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental work is the first comprehensive biblical theology to appear in many years and is the culmination of Brevard Child's lifelong commitment to constructing a biblical theology that surmounts objections to the discipline raised over the past generation. Childs rejects any approaches that overstress either the continuity or discontinuity between the Old and New Testaments. He refuses to follow the common pattern in Christian thought of identifying biblical theology with the New Testament's interest in the Old. Rather, Childs maps out an approach that reflects on the whole Christian Bible with its two very different voices, each of which retains continuing integrity and is heard on its own terms.

Book Synopsis "But God Raised Him from the Dead" by : Kevin Anderson
Download or read book "But God Raised Him from the Dead" written by Kevin Anderson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'But God Raised Him from the Dead' is the first comprehensive study of Jesus' resurrection in Luke-Acts. Through wide-sweeping research and detailed exegesis, Dr. Anderson supports the claim that the resurrection of Jesus is the focus of the message of salvation in Luke-Acts. The study situates Luke's resurrection theology within Jewish and Hellenistic conceptions of the afterlife, and addresses critical questions in Lukan studies, such as the relationship between resurrection, ascension, and exaltation and the vital linkage between Jesus' resurrection, the hope of Israel, and the final resurrection of the dead. 'But God Raised Him from the Dead' demonstrates how the resurrection of Messiah-Jesus is indispensable to the major theological dimensions of Luke's narrative of God's saving action. Jesus' resurrection is a key component in the divine plan to raise up the Savior for Israel, to extend God's saving benefits to the ends of the earth, and to guarantee the complete fulfillment of the hope of Israel and salvation of the people of God at the final resurrection of the dead.

Book Synopsis Light on the Dark Passages of Scripture by : Mark Giszczak
Download or read book Light on the Dark Passages of Scripture written by Mark Giszczak and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God kill people? Why do the innocent suffer? Is Hell a just punishment? Why would God allow Jesus to be crucified? The Old Testament God vs. New Testament God - are they the same person? If you've read the Bible, you may have had these questions cross your mind. Or, you've heard your non-believing friends ask these questions to justify their disbelief. How do we reconcile these questions with our Faith in a loving, just God? The good news is that we CAN work through these difficult passages and arrive at a deeper knowledge of who God really is, leading to a closer relationship with him. Light on the Dark Passages of Scripture guides you through God's revelation, interpreting challenging texts, providing reasonable answers to nagging questions, and showing the mercies of a loving God. "The best book I know that explains - and doesn't explain away - the truly difficult texts of scripture. I can't recommend this book enough!" - Ralph Martin, S.T.D. "Guides us through the museum of 'dark passages' and eventually leads us to the display of God's love in Christ as the answer to the human messiness of redemptive history." - Taylor Marshall, PhD

Three further sections examine crucial texts in which children or discussions of childhood are featured; presented along chronological lines, with sections on the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, the Intertestamental Literature, and the New Testament and Early Christian Apocrypha. Relevant not only to biblical studies but also cross-disciplinary scholars interested in children in antiquity.

Download or read book Pesharim written by Maurya P. Horgan and published by Catholic Biblical Quarterly Monograph Series. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Hebrew documents recovered from the Qumran caves are eighteen texts distinguished by the fact that each is a continuous commentary on or an interpretation of a single biblical book. These texts are called pesharim because each section of interpretation following a biblical citation is introduced by one of several formulas using the word pēser, "interpretation" (plural: pĕsārim). The documents that are extant preserve portions of commentaries on the book of Psalms and on the prophetic books of Isaiah, Hosea, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah. The monograph presents the Hebrew texts of the pesharim, an English translation, and notes on the texts that cover features of the Hebrew language in these scrolls, suggested restorations of lacunae, and possible connections of the content of the commentary sections to historical events. Following the presentation of the texts is a discussion of the literary genre of pesher, treating the structure of the documents, the formulas employed, the modes of interpretation, and the relation of the pesharim to some other writings.
