Book excerpt: 1891. Comte, a French philosopher, was the founder of Positivism. Positivism is a philosophical system of thought maintaining that the goal of knowledge is simply to describe the phenomena experienced, not to question whether it exists or not. Comte sought to apply the methods of observation and experimentation, as was beginning to be used in the hard sciences, to a field that we now know as sociology. This is one of his later works. Contents: Explanation of the Worship; Explanation of the Doctrine; Explanation of the Regime, or System of Life; and General History of Religion.

EXPLANATION OF THE WORSHIP. CONVERSATION III. THE WORSHIP AS A WHOLE. The Woman.--In our second introductory conversation, you have cleared up, my father, the difficulties I originally felt as to the conception of Humanity, the centre of the whole Positive system. You have, in fact, revealed to me the goddess whom I am, as a Positivist, to serve. You must now teach me to love her more, that I may serve her better. It is my hope that, in the end, I shall be found worthy to be incorporated into her. Thus accepting my position as a Positivist, even prior to any more detailed explanations of the doctrine, I naturally change my attitude, and our conferences assume more completely the character of real conversations. I shall not in this part lay before you doubts on important points, requiring long explanations. I shall only interrupt you to clear up or set forth more fully points on which you do not sufficiently dwell. I even hope, in the case of the worship, to take an active part, and assist you by anticipating some of your explanations, so as to make your exposition more rapid, without detracting from its completeness. We are now entering on the domain of feeling, and in this domain the inspiration of woman, though it keep its empirical character, can really aid the priesthood in its construction. The Priest.--I look with great hope, my daughter, to this spontaneous co-operation, as likely to shorten this part of our Catechism. But, in order to make as much use as possible of your present disposition, this new conversation, which concerns merely the worship in general, must begin by a systematic account of the general plan of our religion, though you are already familiar with it. Combinations must in all cases be binary. This...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This English edition of The Catechism of Positive Religion was published in 1891, thirty-four years after the death of Comte, the French philosopher of science and politics and founder of positivism, whose work was widely read in the later nineteenth century. Comte's self-published French original of 1852, translated here, outlines his progressive ideal of 'sociocracy', which would provide a systematic basis, free of metaphysics, for intellectual and moral transactions among humans. Congreve's edition, in common with others, divides the book into five parts. The introduction contains two dialogues, entitled General Theory of Religion and Theory of Humanity. Parts 1-3 respectively consider the Positivist's private and public 'worship'; 'doctrine', including the external world and human society and ethics; and 'regime' or way of life, private and public. The final two dialogues cover polytheism, monotheism and theocracy. This book remains of interest as an early precursor of secular humanist ethics.

Book excerpt: While there is an ever-growing body of literature on the economic, cultural, and political aspects of globalization, there are no critical, up-to-date studies on its philosophical and ideological underpinnings. Vincenzo Pavone fills this gap in the literature by analyzing one of the most interesting actors operating on a global scale: the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Assessing the influence of both seventeenth- and nineteenth-century scientific humanism on the ideas of Julian Huxley, the founding father of modern scientific humanism and the first director of UNESCO, the author discusses the changes that have occurred in UNESCO's self-perception, identity, and vision of globalization, particularly within the context of its four programs-MOST, IBC, the Dakar Framework for Action, and the CCP. Pavone further explores the relationship between scientific humanism and the development of UNESCO, showing how scientific humanism affected the history of UNESCO by inspiring a conception of the organization as truly global.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a contextual account of the first anarchist theory of war and peace, and sheds new light on our contemporary understandings of anarchy in International Relations. Although anarchy is arguably the core concept of the discipline of international relations, scholarship has largely ignored the insights of the first anarchist, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. Proudhon's anarchism was a critique of the projects of national unification, universal dominion, republican statism and the providentialism at the heart of enlightenment social theory. While his break with the key tropes of modernity pushed him to the margins of political theory, Prichard links Proudhon back into the republican tradition of political thought from which his ideas emerged, and shows how his defence of anarchy was a critique of the totalising modernist projects of his contemporaries. Given that we are today moving beyond the very statist processes Proudhon objected to, his writings present an original take on how to institutionalise justice and order in our radically pluralised, anarchic international order. Rethinking the concept and understanding of anarchy, Justice, Order and Anarchy will be of interest to students and scholars of political philosophy, anarchism and international relations theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkish republicanism is commonly thought to have originated with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the founding of modern Turkey in 1923, and understood exclusively in terms of Kemalist ideals, characterized by the principles of secularism, nationalism, statism, and populism. Banu Turnaoğlu challenges this view, showing how Turkish republicanism represents the outcome of centuries of intellectual dispute in Turkey over Islamic and liberal conceptions of republicanism, culminating in the victory of Kemalism in the republic's formative period. Drawing on a wealth of rare archival material, Turnaoğlu presents the first complete history of republican thinking in Turkey from the birth of the Ottoman state to the founding of the modern republic. She shows how the Kemalists wrote Turkish history from their own perspective, presenting their own version of republicanism as inevitable while disregarding the contributions of competing visions. Turnaoğlu demonstrates how republicanism has roots outside the Western political experience, broadening our understanding of intellectual history. She reveals how the current crises in Turkish politics—including the Kurdish Question, democratic instability, the rise of radical Islam, and right-wing Turkish nationalism—arise from intellectual tensions left unresolved by Kemalist ideology. A breathtaking work of scholarship, The Formation of Turkish Republicanism offers a strikingly new narrative of the evolution and shaping of modern Turkey.
