Book excerpt: A Double Barreled Detective Story by Mark Twain features Sherlock Holmes in the American west. Twain uses Sherlock Holmes to brilliantly parody the entire mystery genre. Holmes slavishly employs the scientific method to a ridiculous degree and to a widely incorrect conclusion while attempting to solve a crime. Holmes nephew, Fetlock Jones, provides us with Twain's opinion of Holmes: "Anybody that knows him the way I do knows he can't detect a crime except where he plans it all out beforehand and arranges the clues and hires some fellow to commit it according to instructions." Fans of both Sherlock Holmes and Mark Twain will be delighted by this wonderful book.

There has been a wedding, between a handsome young man of slender means and a rich young girl-a case of love at first sight and a precipitate marriage; a marriage bitterly opposed by the girl's widowed father. Jacob Fuller, the bridegroom, is twenty-six years old, is of an old but unconsidered family which had by compulsion emigrated from Sedgemoor, and for King James's purse's profit, so everybody -some maliciously- the rest merely because they believed it. The bride is nineteen and beautiful. She is intense, high-strung, romantic, immeasurably proud of her Cavalier blood, and passionate in her love for her young husband. For its sake she braved her father's displeasure, endured his reproaches, listened with loyalty unshaken to his warning predictions, and went from his house without his blessing, proud and happy in the proofs she was thus giving of the quality of the affection which had made its home in her heart. The morning after the marriage there was a sad surprise for her. Her husband put aside her proffered caresses, and said: "Sit down. I have something to say to you. I loved you. That was before I asked your father to give you to me. His refusal is not my grievance-I could have endured that. But the things he said of me to you-that is a different matter.

Book excerpt: A Double Barrelled Detective Story Mark Twain 1902 A Double Barreled Detective Story is a short story/novelette by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), in which Sherlock Holmes finds himself in the American west.SummaryThe story contains two arcs of revenges. In the primary arc, a rich young woman is abused, humiliated and abandoned by her new husband, Jacob Fuller, whom she married against the wishes of her father. The young Fuller resents her father's rejection and dismissal of him as a neer-do-well and resolves to exact his revenge by mis-treating his new bride. After his abandonment, she bears a son who she names Archy Stillman. When the child gets older, the mother discovers that he possesses an incredible ability of smell, like a bloodhound. The mother instructs her child, now sixteen, to seek out his biological father with the intent of destroying that man's peace and reputation, and hence extracting satisfaction for her. Five years later in a second arc, at a mining camp in California, Fetlock Jones, a nephew of Sherlock Holmes, kills his master Flint Buckner, a silver-miner, by blowing up his cabin. Since this occurs when Holmes happens to be visiting, Holmes applies his skills to bear upon the case and derives a logically worked conclusion that is proved to be abysmally wrong by Archy Stillman using his sense of smell. This could be seenas yet another piece where Twain tried to prove that life does not quite follow logic. This is a satire by Twain on the mystery novel genre. In the second arc, Sherlock Holmes is depicted in employing "scientific methods" to a ridiculous degree, yet arriving at a completely wrong assessment. On the other hand, the crime is solved with a supernatural ability that no normal human possesses. Yet even this fails to reveal the whole truth as the final twist of the story indicates.Furthermore, Sam Clemens/Mark Twain poked through the "4th wall" and appeared as himself in the middle of the story, supposedly while the story was being serialized, and responded to letters sent in by readers to the newspaper editor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherlock Holmes, the Legend Sherlock Holmes was Arthur Conan Doyle's miracle. Like many miracles, it came of its own accord and rather overwhelmed its recipient. There may have been times when St. Paul, after his experience on the road to Damascus, really wished he could go back to his old life, but he couldn't, and he knew it. Conan Doyle, too, reluctantly came to the same conclusion, though only after a desperate struggle. He felt that the Holmes stories were taking time and public attention away from his more serious work. So, with great deliberation he killed off his detective in the 24th story in the series, the ominously entitled "The Final Problem," sending both Holmes and his arch-nemesis created for the occasion, the "Napoleon of Crime," Dr. Moriarty, over the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. That, Doyle sincerely hoped, would be the end of that. But miracles do not stay dead, of course, even if, during the period in which Holmes was officially deceased, the fantasy-humorist John Kendrick Bangs, with permission, depicted the posthumous doings of Sherlock Holmes's shade on the River Styx in The Pursuit of the House-Boat (1897). In his unsuccessful attempt to kill off Holmes, Doyle came very close to creating a second immortal character, in the person of Moriarty, who has certainly had a substantial later career in the hands of other writers. "The Final Problem" appeared in 1893. For all Conan Doyle might have wished otherwise, the world had not seen the last of Sherlock Holmes. Collected here in this giant oversized volume are nine Sherlock Homes books including A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, A Double Barreled Detective Story by Mark Twain, and The Pursuit of the House-Boat by John Kendrick Bangs, with an authoritative introduction by Darrell Schweitzer. No other Holmes collection includes the books by Bangs, which was the only use of Holmes that Doyle himself ever authorized, and Twain, who was the most famous author other than Doyle to write a Sherlock Holmes story. More than 1,000 pages of Sherlock Holmes mysteries.

Clemens had brought a selection of his "notes" with him on a trip to London, intending to work on his autobiography. While he and his family were out for the evening, someone gained entrance to their suite at the Langham Hotel and took the case that contained the notes. As Watson and Holmes begin the investigation, Watson recognizes Adelaide Savage, whom he'd first met on another case, and whose company he enjoyed greatly.

Book excerpt: In 1923, the young reporter James Thurber was given a half a page in the Sunday Evening Dispatch of Columbus, Ohio, every week to fill with anything he wanted. For most of that year, he turned out book reviews, humorous commentary, jokes, stories, and even literary criticism. He also wrote a series of 13 short Sherlockian parodies — 10,000 words in all — starring Blue Ploermell, a “psychosocial” detective with a fondness for animal crackers. Aided (and occasionally impeded) by his Chinese manservant, Gong Low, Ploermell investigates cases marked by his cock-eyed deductions, loopy logic, and a knack for leaping to the wrong conclusion. These juvenilia represents Thurber’s first attempts at learning the craft of humor writing. Looking back at this work years later, he even considered publishing the Ploermell stories. The Cases of Blue Ploermell, for the first time in a century, collects the 13 stories. Edited and annotated by Bill Peschel, they show Thurber trying his hand at characterization, story structure, ethnic humor, and serial writing in a style rarely seen at any newspaper. In addition to the annotations, Peschel wrote essays on Thurber’s years in Columbus, Ohio; journalism in the 1920s; the state of Sherlockian parodies; and depictions of Chinese men and women in American popular culture. Note: The 13 stories are very short, and take up 40 pages of this 200-page book. The rest of the book consists of these essays: “Becoming James Thurber” (39 pages); “Journalism in Thurber’s Time” (4 pages); “Sherlockian Parodies in the 1920s” (8 pages); “The Ancestors of Gong Low” (13 pages); “The Chinese in Popular Culture” (35 pages); movie reviews (19 pages); chronology (9 pages); lists (7 pages). SHORT DESCRIPTION: In 1923, a young James Thurber wrote 13 short Sherlockian parodies (10,000 words) for his newspaper in Columbus, Ohio. They starred Blue Ploermell, a “psychosocial” detective with a fondness for animal crackers. Aided by his Chinese manservant, he solves cases with his cock-eyed deductions and a knack for leaping to the wrong conclusion. This book contains the stories plus essays about Thurber.
