Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The town of Carthage, NY is not what it appears to be. To the tourists who pass by during the summer months, it appears to be an idyllic community. However, it never remains peaceful for long. In book one of the series, Don't Pay the Ferryman, a mysterious ferry owner comes to town, and shortly thereafter, a string of disappearances begin to occur. Local residents, Dave "Bucky" Morgan and Roger Fasick, decide to unite their efforts in investigating the bizarre happenings that have transpired since the ferry service entered their lives. In the second novel of the "Carthage Chronicles" trilogy, it seemed as though the town was becoming quiet and tranquil once again; unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. Don't Fear the Reaper picks up the story five years later and finds the town experiencing a new threat in the form of destructive fires sweeping through the community as well as the appearance of a Grim Reaper-type individual. Before the town is completely destroyed, they must find out if the Reaper a ghost, a demon, or one of the local townspeople. Or worse yet, has the ferryman returned from the dead to wreak more havoc? The third installment of the series, Revenge of the Reaper, picks up right where the original Reaper story left off. After discovering that one of the townsfolk was the Reaper, a final battle ensued atop the historic Buckley Building, which resulted in the villain falling to his demise. However, three days after the felon's apparent death, his body disappears from the morgue and a ghostly Reaper has been spotted once again. As the death toll continues to rise, the town is left to wonder if the murderer has been resurrected from the dead to seek revenge, if the culprit is a copycat killer, or if the shadowy figure is the REAL Grim Reaper of Death - stalking the streets of Carthage to claim some souls for his own!

However, the reemergence of the fires is just one of the town's concerns. Five years after "Don't Pay the Ferryman," Carthage is experiencing a new threat at a time when greed, and apathy have reared their ugly heads over the town. The sudden appearance of a Grim Reaper-type figure has presented a new threat for the residents; but is he a new villain, or has he been around Carthage before? No one has been ruled out as a suspect, leaving the possibility open that the killer could be someone we know and trust. Dave "Bucky" Morgan and Roger Fasick join together once again in an attempt to halt the spread of the Reaper's terror. To defeat the Reaper and stop his madness, they will have to dig up clues to the Reaper's origins as well as overcome their own mounting distrust.

Dave "Bucky" Morgan and Roger Fasick, two friends and lifelong residents, know something is very wrong in their town. Especially since a peculiar and mysterious man has opened a ferry service; a man with no past and questionable credentials. He travels with an attendant, a man of few words and chilling personality, who is just as mysterious as his mentor. Unable to understand the change in many of the townspeople's attitude, Bucky and Roger decide to investigate the bizarre happenings and disappearances that have been occurring since the ferry service entered their lives. Book excerpt: From Lynne Gentry comes this e-short prequel to The Carthage Chronicles and her upcoming novel, Return to Exile, shedding light on the love story of Ruth and Caecilianus and the beginnings of the church in Carthage and their relationship with the young Roman noble, Cyprian. Before Dr. Lisbeth Hastings took her unexpected tumble into third-century Carthage and found herself amidst the persecuted church, future bishop Caecilianus, then a famous dyer of imperial purple, was visiting the tapestry shop in the low-rent district every Tuesday. It may have been a part of his duties as the deacon tasked to check upon the widows and their families, but deep down, he knew it was because of Ruth, the widow's lovely daughter who was so very determined to get the family back on their feet of her own accord. Can Caecilianus break through Ruth's single-minded focus to show her the freedom of surrender? Or will Ruth's dogged self-sufficiency push away the man who loves her?

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carthage and the Carthaginians All these things are possible, even if they are not very probable. But we cannot venture to hope that any such discoveries, whatever their kind or number, will ever enable us to know Carthage, as we know Athens or Rome, from its own citizens; or will do more than throw a few scattered lights upon that imperial City which - all but unknown to us during five centuries of her growth and her true grandeur - blazes forth into the light of day only in that century which witnessed her heroic struggles and her fall. Book excerpt: This epic retelling of the legendary Carthaginian military leader’s assault on the Roman empire begins in Ancient Spain, where Hannibal Barca sets out with tens of thousands of soldiers and 30 elephants. After conquering the Roman city of Saguntum, Hannibal wages his campaign through the outposts of the empire, shrewdly befriending peoples disillusioned by Rome and, with dazzling tactics, outwitting the opponents who believe the land route he has chosen is impossible. Yet Hannibal’s armies must take brutal losses as they pass through the Pyrenees mountains, forge the Rhone river, and make a winter crossing of the Alps before descending to the great tests at Cannae and Rome itself. David Anthony Durham draws a brilliant and complex Hannibal out of the scant historical record–sharp, sure-footed, as nimble among rivals as on the battlefield, yet one who misses his family and longs to see his son grow to manhood. Whether portraying the deliberations of a general or the calculations of a common soldier, vast multilayered scenes of battle or moments of introspection when loss seems imminent, Durham brings history alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The struggle between Rome and Carthage in the Punic Wars was arguably the greatest and most desperate conflict of antiquity. The forces involved and the casualties suffered by both sides were far greater than in any wars fought before the modern era, while the eventual outcome had far-reaching consequences for the history of the Western World, namely the ascendancy of Rome. An epic of war and battle, this is also the story of famous generals and leaders: Hannibal, Fabius Maximus, Scipio Africanus, and his grandson Scipio Aemilianus, who would finally bring down the walls of Carthage.
