Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping history of how Union victory in the American Civil War inspired democratic reforms, revolutions, and emancipation movements in Europe and the Americas The Age of Reconstruction looks beyond post–Civil War America to tell the story of how Union victory and Lincoln’s assassination set off a dramatic international reaction that drove European empires out of the Americas, hastened the end of slavery in Latin America, and ignited a host of democratic reforms in Europe. In this international history of Reconstruction, Don Doyle chronicles the world events inspired by the Civil War. Between 1865 and 1870, France withdrew from Mexico, Russia sold Alaska to the United States, and Britain proclaimed the new state of Canada. British workers demanded more voting rights, Spain toppled Queen Isabella II and ended slavery in its Caribbean colonies, Cubans rose against Spanish rule, France overthrew Napoleon III, and the kingdom of Pope Pius IX fell before the Italian Risorgimento. Some European liberals, including Victor Hugo and Giuseppe Mazzini, even called for a “United States of Europe.” Yet for all its achievements and optimism, this “new birth of freedom” was short-lived. By the 1890s, Reconstruction had been undone in the United States and abroad and America had become an exclusionary democracy based on white supremacy—and a very different kind of model to the world. At home and abroad, America’s Reconstruction was, as W.E.B. Du Bois wrote, “the greatest and most important step toward world democracy of all men of all races ever taken in the modern world.” The Age of Reconstruction is a bracing history of a remarkable period when democracy, having survived the great test of the Civil War, was ascendant around the Atlantic world.

Book excerpt: The Borgia Family: Rumor and Representation explores the historical and cultural structures that underpin the early modern Borgia family, their notoriety, and persistence and reinvention in the popular imagination. The book balances studies focusing on early modern observations of the Borgias and studies deconstructing later incarnations on the stage, on the page, on the street, and on the screen. It reveals how contemporary observers, later authors and artists, and generations of historians reinforced and perpetuated both rumor and reputation, ultimately contributing to the Borgia Black Legend and its representations. Focused on the deeds and posthumous reputations of Pope Alexander VI and his children, Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia, the volume charts the choices made by the family and contextualizes them amid contemporary expectations and reactions. Extending beyond their deaths, it also investigates how the Borgias became emblems of anti-Catholic and anti-Spanish criticism in the later early modern period and their residing reputation as the best and worst of the Renaissance. Exploring a spectrum of traditional and modern media, The Borgia Family contextualizes both Borgia deeds and their modern representations to analyze the family’s continuing history and meaning in the twenty-first century. It will be of great interest to researchers and students working on interdisciplinary aspects of the Renaissance and early modern Italy.

Book excerpt: Jurisdiction and Arbitration Agreements in Contracts for the Carriage of Goods by Sea focuses on party autonomy and its limitations in relation to jurisdiction and arbitration clauses included in contracts for the carriage of goods by sea in case of any cargo dispute. The author takes the perspective of the shipping companies and the shipowners, as these are the driving forces of the shipping industry due to their strategic importance. The book provides an analysis of the existing law on the recognition and validity of jurisdiction and arbitration clauses in the contracts for the carriage of goods by sea. The author also seeks to provide conclusions and to learn lessons for the future of the non-recognition and the non-enforcement of the clauses in the existing fragmented legal framework at an international, European Union, and national level (England & Wales and Spain). The interface between the different legal regimes reveals the lack of international harmonisation and the existence of ‘forum shopping’ when a cargo interest sues the shipowner or the party to whom the shipowner charters the vessel. This concise book provides a useful overview of existing research, for students, scholars and shipping lawyers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerospace Law and Policy Series, Volume 11 In recent years, few industries have grown so prodigiously as that of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and, as a result, developments in national, regional, and international law and policy are being initiated and implemented. This new edition of the definitive survey and guide, first published in 2016, reflects the expansion of this sector and the importance placed on it by a diverse range of stakeholders, as well as the enlarged regulatory and policy landscape. In addition to updating many of the original chapters, the second edition covers new topics and moves away from a purely introductory book to a more detailed and critical compendium. Authorship has also been extended beyond the original scope of contributors, which originally centred around those affiliated with Leiden University’s Institute of Air and Space Law, and now includes additional experts from all around the world, each of whom explores both already existing rules and proposals coming from national, regional and international levels. As well as broadened discussions on such fundamental legal issues as insurance, financing, liability, accidents investigation, privacy, cyber security, stakeholder organisations and industry standards, the second edition takes into account major recent developments in such areas as the following: applicability and relevance of international regulatory instruments; coming into force of the European Union UAS-related laws; evolution of different States’ national law; public safety (e.g., design, production, operation and maintenance); development of unmanned traffic management systems; commercial operations, including urban air mobility (e.g., flying taxis, cargo delivery, high-altitude activities); and developments in defence and security (e.g., dual-use, counter-UAS industry to combat illegal use). As in the first edition, a representative cross section of national laws is included, covering twenty-one different jurisdictions. This fully updated edition not only synthesises and clarifies the complex body of international, regional and national UAS-related law, but also provides expert insight into trends and areas of concern for numerous stakeholders. Without a doubt, it will be of immeasurable value to lawyers, relevant governmental and non-governmental agencies, aviation law scholars, and strategic planners in the wider aviation and transport industries.
