Book excerpt: This is Kaniuekutat's book. In it, he tells the story of his life and that of Innu culture in the northern parts of Labrador. The pages of this book are filled with the voice of Kaniuekutat giving his account of an Innu hunter's life and the problems and distress that have been caused by sedentarization and village life. Kaniuekutat invites us to see Innu society and culture from the inside, the way he lives it and reflects upon it. He was greatly concerned that young Innu may lose their traditional culture and the skills necessary to make a living as hunters, and wanted to convey a message: the Innu must take care of their language, their culture and their traditions.

Book excerpt: When twenty-year-old Bert Ray Libe read “Men wanted for Alaska to build a railroad—apply 526 Jackson Street” on a signboard in San Francisco one July morning in 1905, he immediately envisioned hunting adventures and gold-seeking opportunities in the rugged land of the north. The next morning his adventurous soul was infused with excitement as he boarded the SS Valencia bound for Seward, Alaska, accompanied by over four hundred other men, a woman dressed as a man, and a teenage boy. Bert was soon given the moniker, Fuzzy, by his shipmates because of his unruly hair. In a fascinating retelling of Bert’s adventures, Jzonay Reitz invites others to witness the breathtaking beauty of Alaska through Fuzzy’s eyes as he hunts in the pristine Kenai Mountains and traverses the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys of Southcentral Alaska, then ventures across snow-covered benches of Denali (Mt. McKinley) with four dogs and a sled and returns in the spring to search for gold in the glacial tributaries. Interspersed throughout his stories are an abundance of historical facts and revealing photographs. A Quest for Adventure is an inspiring and engaging memoir, brimming with energy and personality, and laced with humor even during challenging circumstances. KIRKUS REVIEW "A historically satisfying...memoir. Reitz intersperses occasional historical photographs and notes...particularly helpful in guiding the reader through her uncle's portrayals of Alaskan life, as in her detailed description of the lay of the land in the town of Seward in 1905...'Home Brew Alley'...'Millionaire's Row'..." ~Kirkus Indie - a review service from Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rich storytelling tradition of the Inupiat of Alaska is showcased in this remarkable collection of over eighty stories. Meticulously compiled from six villages in Northwest Alaska between 1966 and 1987, the stories are presented as part of a living tradition, complete with biographies, photos, and introductory remarks by Native storytellers. Each story provides insight into the Iñupiaq worldview, human-animal relationships, and the organization of family life. The Dall Sheep Dinner Guest includes a new version of the Qayaq cycle, one of the best-known legends from the region, as well as stories such as “The Fast Runner.” A major contribution to the Native literature of Alaska, this collection includes two introductory essays by Wanni W. Anderson that provide historical background and a foundation for understanding gender, age, and regional differences and the narrative context of storytelling. Stories include The Girl Who Had No Wish to Marry by Willie Goodwin, Sr., The Goose Maiden by Nora Norton, The Last War with the Indians by Wesley Woods, The Orphan with No Clothes by Emma Skin, The Qayaq Cycle by Nora Norton, and Raven Who Brought Back the Land by Robert Cleveland (selected Iñupiaq Storyteller by the Inupiat of Northwest Alaska). Additional storytellers include John Brown, Leslie Burnett, Flora Cleveland, Lois Cleveland, Maude Cleveland, Kitty Foster, Sarah Goode, Minnie Gray, Beatrice Mouse, Nellie Russell, and Andrew Skin.

Book excerpt: "What the heck are we doin' in the Yukon? We're lab rats, not explorers." Marty Relson Three American scientists, Mike McCord, his wife Donna and their business partner, Marty Relson, team up to search for the dietary ingredient that produces world class trophy moose in the Yukon Territory. If they can isolate the protein, the synthesized version could be worth millions as a replacement for growth hormones in beef cattle. To acquire the best specimens, the trio needed access to a wide variety of native vegetation, so Mike hired veteran outfitter and guide, Karl Thomas to provide a float trip down the famous Caribou River. Suffering from a recent back injury, Thomas assigned two native brothers, Little Eagle and Owl Eyes, to guide the American scientists. For various reasons, the young guides did not get along with the three Americans. "We woke up one morning and everything was gone," Donna explained. "They took everything. They took the canoes, the food, they even took our boots. Then they came back to kill us." The trio is forced to kill both native guides, which leads to criminal proceedings in the Canadian legal system. The younger brother, Owl Eyes, has the power of the Ancient Ones and, in the form of an apparition, nearly drives Marty Relson to a mental breakdown. As a spirit, Owl Eyes' appearances are usually preceded by the odor of rotting flesh and the temperature dropping to a clammy fifty degrees Fahrenheit. After several encounters with Owl Eyes the apparition, Marty is driven to the point of committing murder. Thinking he is finally free, Marty finds that Owl Eyes has even greater powers when he stuns Marty in the final chapter.
