Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Care and Training of Children Knowing the individual child, the parent will be prepared, as no one else can be, to cope with any condition which may arise in its training. Further than this, the knowl edge so acquired will prove helpful in situa tions in which a stranger must be called in for help. In all matters pertaining to child study and child life, broad general principles can be laid down, but there must be, in addi tion to this, study of personality in order to carry principles out in detail. A careful reading of the several chapters of this book will readily Show that, even a conscientious carrying out of the principles suggested in securing right conduct in children, will often result in failure unless the particular needs of the individual child are studied and met. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child From One to Six: His Care and Training He's nearly a year old, and before you know it he won't be a baby any more. I hate to see him grow up. Mothers and fathers who talk like this do not realize how impor tant to the child's future is the growing up that he does between the first birthday and the sixth. They may give the baby the best of care and the older children the best of schooling, but they do not understand how much the child is growing in mind as well as in body during this ih-between period, the preschool years. They may even hinder his development by encouraging baby ways when they should be encouraging independence and free activity. The baby less than a year old usually gets more attention than the child who is running around. The preschool child needs as much thought on the part of the parents as does the baby, perhaps even more. When parents are making every effort to give the proper care to the child who is just leaving babyhood many questions arise: How fast should he be growing? How many teeth should he have? What food is best for him? How can he be helped to build good habits? The best answers to such questions can be had from the family doctor. This bulletin has been prepared in order to help par ents carry out the doctor's advice and to help them solve some of the ordinary problems that arise in every family. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Children and Their School Training This work is addressed chiefly to teachers, parents, and others in daily contact with children; but contains information that is likely to interest those engaged in directing education, philanthropy, and other forms of social work as well as those concerned with mental science. The book has been written in the hope of aiding an advance in the care of children, and in the practice of educational methods, by promoting a more exact study and classification of the children to be cared for and trained; while giving an account of some conditions of childhood in its many varieties as seen from the standpoint of the observer who records what he sees as in other branches of physical science. For the purposes of observation, a clear account of the points to look at, what to look for, and what may be seen, normal or subnormal, forms the alphabet of our subject. Child study has of late years been actively carried on in America and in other countries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes Early Training of Children For the average parents the great educational thinkers seem to have existed in vain the wisdom of Plato, with its perennial freshness and beauty, the noble ideal of Milton, the excellent sense of Locke, the originality of Rousseau, the loving insight of Pestalozzi, the abundant thought and suggestiveness of modern writers on education, are guiding lights which exist not for them. They are at no trouble to settle which definition of education is most satisfactory to them, they are not oppressed by the importance of the subject with which they have to deal. The child belongs to them; its relations to society and humanity do not come within the scope of their thought. They gather up, in some sort of fashion, the cur rent ideas of their time with regard to the bringing up of children, and they act upon these. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Children It is a very precious thing that we give our children, if we can contrive to give them Wide and generous sym pathies, if we can make their hearts great enough to feel for the whole world, precious to others and also to them selves; for the cares and worries of life are more easily and lightly borne by those of us, who have early taken, what George mcdonald happily calls, that greatest of all steps, the step out of doors. To feel beyond and above one's own petty personal interests, calms, rests and strengthens the human soul, and we should teach children to do this; and with this universal, all embracing sympathy and love, comes the deepest responsibility, for Love is the fulfilling of the law. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educating the Child at Home: Personal Training the Work Habit By writing this book in plain English it is hoped to reach two results: Firstly. To open the preserves of pedagogy and child-psychology to those who, though naturally most intensely interested in the subject, arc deterred therefrom by the forbidding phraseology wherein it has hitherto been discussed and presented. Secondly. To help mothers to resume and do their sacred duty by their children instead of shirking it and delegating it to the school. All that I have written is based upon actual practical experience and study. Like the long search for the Promised Land is the search for an efficient school, while the great opportunity of home instruction and education is ignored. Where shall I find the best school for my children? Teach them yourself the things you know and can do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Children a Book for Young Teachers A former book, entitled "Teaching a District School," having been received with gratifying appreciation by those for whom it was written, and also with the commendation of leading educators the country over, it is hoped that the present volume may be equally well received and prove to be even more helpful than its predecessor. It has long been the desire of the author to prepare, for country and village teachers, a work on the development and training of the mind that would contain the essential facts of psychology so plainly and simply expressed that any person might grasp their meaning without a too frequent appeal to the dictionary. It is possible, or it should be possible, to express the underlying truths of any important science in the everyday language of the people. Many young men and young women who lack both high school and college training are nevertheless not lacking in intelligence. They have the ability to understand any available knowledge that is not expressed in terms with which they are unfamiliar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parenthood and Child Nurture The spiritual nurture and religious training of the world's childhood is vital to all we hold dear in our Chris tian civilization. In this work of child training, the home holds the strategic place. It has the children in its care in the early years before they are old enough to attend either the Public School or the Church School. The im pressions of these years determine or modify the whole of the life that follows. Even later, the children spend many more hours in the home than they do in either the Church or Public School. The training of parents for the task of child training in the home, therefore, becomes one of the Church's great est responsibilities. To perform this service effectively. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Your Child From One to Six Child Care - the Preschool Years, as a sequel to Infant Care, which had first been issued in 1914. Completely rewritten in the present edition, this guide represents recent thought on various aspects of the care and development of young children. From centering attention on techniques of child care and training, the leaders in this field have now come to place their main emphasis on the relationships involved in living together in a family. Studies of children's behavior have revealed that parents' attitudes and personalities and the way they feel about their children play a much larger part in a child's healthy development than does any set of rules they may follow in bringing up their children. The present text attempts to show how emotional maturity in parents themselves can bring about the security and affectionate understanding that must underlie sound and creative family relationships. This publication was written by Mrs. Marion L. Faegre, Parent Education Consultant in the Division of Research in Child Development of the Children's Bureau, and Dr. Caroline A. Chandler, a former member of the Division, under the general supervision of Dr. Katherine Bain, Director of that Division. Marjorie Heseltine, Chief of the Bureau's Nutrition Unit, contributed the material on food and nutrition. It has been reviewed and approved by the Pediatric Advisory Committee of the Children's Bureau - Dr. Howard Childs Carpenter, for many years representing the American Child Health Association, now dissolved; Dr. Julius H. Hess, representing the section on diseases of children of the American Medical Association; Dr. Richard M. Smith, representing the American Pediatric Society; and Dr. J. H. Mason Knox, representing the American Academy of Pediatrics. It was reviewed, also, by a number of other specialists in pediatrics, child development, social work, psychology, and psychiatry. To these many persons, all of whom made helpful suggestions, grateful thanks are extended and especially to three persons who reviewed the material in great detail: Dr. C. Anderson Aldrich, Dr. Milton I. Senn, and Dr. George S. Stevenson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
