A nervous woman may be brought quickly under the influence of the ethyl chlorid, and the ether or chloroform follow without the patient experiencing any of the ordinary discomfort of an anesthetic, and consequently, without a struggle. Her convalescence from the effects of the anesthetic is more rapid because she has not undergone so thorough a saturation with it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Medical Association Journal, 1916, Vol. 6: Nos. 7-12 This preeminence of these remedial agents in our modern ideas of therapy, the profession owes in great measure to the almost world-wide study of the conditions which influence the course of an infection by the tubercle bacilli in man and animals. No one advance in modern therapy has conferred so much benefit upon the sick and ailing as the recognition by the profession of the health-restoring properties of free, fresh, flowing air. I was much interested the other day when listening to an address by Dr. Frank Billings, of Chicago, on vaccine therapy, to hear him state that comparing the records of many hundreds of patients treated by the most carefully prepared autogenous vaccines, with the records of patients who received no vaccines but were placed under the most favourable hygienic conditions, with rest, abundance of fresh air and a carefully regulated dietary, he found that these latter with no specific vaccines had their defences aroused quite as quickly and as fully as those who received vaccines. On the other hand, in a few who received the vaccine treatment, but in whom no attention was paid to conditions of general hygiene and careful upbuilding of the strength, it was noted that the vaccines of themselves did not bring forth much of a response. Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids including a PowerPoint presentation for each chapter. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1886, Vol. 6: Containing the Official Record of Its Proceedings, and the Reports and Papers Presented in the Several Sections Three years ago, small-pox broke out in a lumber camp, but a few miles from where I reside. Nine teen persons had it, and one died. At the same time, and in an immediate neighborhood, scarlet fever made its appearance, with a total of twelve cases, and five deaths. The people of the country, for miles around, were excited and alarmed about the small-pox, but paid little or no attention to the scarlet fever. But a few weeks since, in the same neighborhood, diphtheria was introduced into a family of eight children, and while six of the children died, the disease was not allowed to spread beyond that family. Its presence was immediately reported to the local health officer and to the State Board of Health. The house was placarded, and quarantined, and every precaution taken to keep the disease within its original limits; and while mourning continues in that household, the community is saved from the further spread of that most fearful scourge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, a German study estimated that women expended as many calories cleaning their coal-mining husbands' work clothes as their husbands did working below ground, arguably making the home as much a site of industrialized work as factories and mines. But while energy studies are beginning to acknowledge the importance of social and historical contexts and to produce more inclusive histories of the unprecedented energy transitions that powered industrialization, women have remained notably absent from these accounts. In a New Light explores the vital place of women in the shift to fossil fuels that spurred the Industrial Revolution, illuminating the variety of ways in which gender and energy intersected in women's lives in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Europe and North America. From their labour in the home, where they managed the adoption of new energy sources, to their work as educators in electrical housecraft and their protests against the effects of industrialization, women took on active roles to influence energy decisions. Together these essays deepen our understanding of the significance of gender in the history of energy, and of energy transitions in the history of women and gender. By foregrounding women's energetic labours and concerns, the authors shed new light on energy use in the past and provide important insights as societies move towards a carbon-neutral future.
