Book Synopsis Brouwer's Cambridge Lectures on Intuitionism by : Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer
Download or read book Brouwer's Cambridge Lectures on Intuitionism written by Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luitzen Egburtus Jan Brouwer founded a school of thought whose aim was to include mathematics within the framework of intuitionistic philosophy; mathematics was to be regarded as an essentially free development of the human mind. What emerged diverged considerably at some points from tradition, but intuitionism has survived well the struggle between contending schools in the foundations of mathematics and exact philosophy. Originally published in 1981, this monograph contains a series of lectures dealing with most of the fundamental topics such as choice sequences, the continuum, the fan theorem, order and well-order. Brouwer's own powerful style is evident throughout the work.

Book Synopsis On Civil Procedure by : J. A. Jolowicz
Download or read book On Civil Procedure written by J. A. Jolowicz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-02-17 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Jolowicz's comparative analysis of civil procedure concentrates on the purposes served by the institution of litigation rather than on the intentions of those who litigate. Stressing that those purposes go beyond mere dispute resolution by non-violent means, Jolowicz surveys a variety of topics of procedural law, making substantial use of the comparative method, in the attempt to examine and explain the ideas which underlie some of the most important of its constituent elements. In the final section, he deals with the reform of English law and ventures a prediction of the consequences that the new Civil Procedure Rules, together with the reforms which more or less immediately preceded them, will have on the character of English procedural law.

Book Synopsis A Continental Distinction in the Common Law by : John W. F. Allison
Download or read book A Continental Distinction in the Common Law written by John W. F. Allison and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of an autonomous English public law has been accompanied by persistent problems - a lack of systematic principles, dissatisfaction with judicial procedures, and uncertainty about the judicial role. It has provoked an ongoing debate on the very desirability of the distinctionbetween public and private law. In this debate, a historical and comparative perspective has been lacking. A Continental Distinction in the Common Law introduces such a perspective. It compares the recent emergence of a significant English distinction with the entrenchment of the traditional Frenchdistinction. It explains how persistent problems of English public law are related to fundamental differences between the English and French legal and political traditions, differences in their conception of the state administration, their approach to law, their separation of powers, and theirjudicial procedures in public-law cases. The author argues that a satisfactory distinction between public and private law depends on a particular legal and political context, a context which was evident in late nineteenth-century France and is absent in twentieth-century England. He concludes byidentifying the far-reaching theoretical, institutional, and procedural changes required to accommodate English public law.
Download or read book Brian Dickson written by Robert J. Sharpe and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2003-12-15 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Brian Dickson was appointed in 1973, the Supreme Court of Canada was preoccupied with run-of-the-mill disputes. By the time he retired as Chief Justice of Canada in 1990, the Court had become a major national institution, very much in the public eye. The Court's decisions, reforming large areas of private and public law under the Charter of Rights, were the subject of intense public interest and concern. Brian Dickson played a leading role in this transformation. Engaging and incisive, Brian Dickson: A Judge's Journey traces Dickson's life from a Depression-era boyhood in Saskatchewan, to the battlefields of Normandy, the boardrooms of corporate Canada and high judicial office, and provides an inside look at the work of the Supreme Court during its most crucial period. Dickson's journey was an important part of the evolution of the Canadian judiciary and of Canada itself. Sharpe and Roach have written an accessible biography of one of Canada's greatest legal figures that provides new insights into the work of Canada's highest court.

Book Synopsis Time, History and Architecture by : Gevork Hartoonian
Download or read book Time, History and Architecture written by Gevork Hartoonian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time, History and Architecture presents a series of essays on critical historiography, each addressing a different topic, to elucidate the importance of two influential figures Walter Benjamin and Gottfried Semper for architectural history. In a work exploring themes such as time, autonomy and periodization, author Gevork Hartoonian unpacks the formation of architectural history; the problem of autonomy in criticism and the historiographic narrative. Considering the scope of criticism informing the contemporaneity of architecture, the book explores the concept of nonsimultaneity, and introduces retrospective criticism the agent of critical historiography. An engaging thematic dialogue for academics and upper-level graduate students interested in architectural history and theory, this book aims to deconstruct the certainties of historicism and to raise new questions and interpretations from established critical canons.
