Download or read book Sacred Trash written by Adina Hoffman and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD FINALIST WINNER OF THE 2012 AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION’S SOPHIE BRODY AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN JEWISH LITERATURE Sacred Trash tells the remarkable story of the Cairo Geniza—a synagogue repository for worn-out texts that turned out to contain the most vital cache of Jewish manuscripts ever discovered. This tale of buried communal treasure weaves together unforgettable portraits of Solomon Schechter and the other modern heroes responsible for the collection’s rescue with explorations of the medieval documents themselves—letters and poems, wills and marriage contracts, Bibles, money orders, fiery dissenting religious tracts, fashion-conscious trousseaux lists, prescriptions, petitions, and mysterious magical charms. Presenting a panoramic view of almost a thousand years of vibrant Mediterranean Judaism, Adina Hoffman and Peter Cole bring contemporary readers into the heart of this little-known trove, whose contents have rightly been dubbed “the Living Sea Scrolls.” Part biography, part meditation on the supreme value the Jewish people has long placed in the written word, Sacred Trash is above all a gripping tale of adventure and redemption. (With black-and-white illustrations throughout.)

Book Synopsis Vocalised Talmudic Manuscripts in the Cambridge Genizah Collections: Volume 1, Taylor-Schechter Old Series by : Cambridge University Library
Download or read book Vocalised Talmudic Manuscripts in the Cambridge Genizah Collections: Volume 1, Taylor-Schechter Old Series written by Cambridge University Library and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-07-29 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Morag presents the results of a painstaking investigation of significant linguistic and textual aspects of 165 medieval manuscripts in the 'Old Series' of the famous Taylor-Schechter Collection. The vocalisation found in these manuscripts exhibits signs and forms characteristic of the Tiberian, Babylonian ('simple' as well as 'complex') and Palestino-Tiberian systems and sheds important light on the grammatical structure and meaning of the words in which it occurs. This pioneering study includes detailed descriptions of the manuscripts containing the vocalisation and eleven plates that illustrate the author's classification of the material.

Book Synopsis Jewish Prayer Texts from the Cairo Genizah by : Stefan C. Reif
Download or read book Jewish Prayer Texts from the Cairo Genizah written by Stefan C. Reif and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-03-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewish Prayer Texts from the Cairo Genizah, which sets a new tone for future studies, consists of a selection of transcribed and translated Genizah fragments that contain some of the earliest known texts of rabbinic prayers. Reif describes in detail the physical makeup of each manuscript and assesses the manner in which the scribe has tackled the matter of recording a preferred version. He then places the prayer texts included in the manuscript within the context of Jewish liturgical history, explaining the degree to which they were innovative and whether they established precedents to be followed in later prayer-books. He offers specialists and more general readers a fresh understanding of the historical, theological, linguistic, and social factors that may have motivated adjustments to their liturgical formulations.

Book Synopsis Palestinian Vocalised Piyyut Manuscripts in the Cambridge Genizah Collections by : Cambridge University Library

This book was released on 1997-03-20 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Semitic languages the vowels are not part of the alphabet and each Semitic language has its special method of marking its particular vowel values. In the Hebrew of Late Antiquity, a supralinear method of doing this was first introduced after the Arabic conquest of Palestine in the seventh century. It was used mainly for liturgical purposes in complicated poetic texts, and it was soon displaced by the classical Tiberian system. The oldest existing specimens of this supralinear method are on vellum manuscripts from Cairo where the remaining fragments were deposited by Jewish refugees from Crusader Palestine at the end of the eleventh century. The fragments from the Cairo depository, known as the Cairo Genizah, are best represented in the Genizah Collections at Cambridge University Library. This volume gives for the first time a full description of the scattered and torn fragments, as well as of their notational value.
