Download or read book The History of Gambling in England written by John Ashton and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1898 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Difference between Gaming and Gambling-Universality and Antiquity of Gambling-Isis and Osiris-Games and Dice of the Egyptians-China and India-The Jews-Among the Greeks and Romans-Among Mahometans-Early Dicing-Dicing in England in the 13th and 14th Centuries-In the 17th Century-Celebrated Gamblers-Bourchier-Swiss Anecdote-Dicing in the 18th Century. Gaming is derived from the Saxon word Gamen, meaning joy, pleasure, sports, or gaming-and is so interpreted by Bailey, in his Dictionary of 1736; whilst Johnson gives Gamble-to play extravagantly for money, and this distinction is to be borne in mind in the perusal of this book; although the older term was in use until the invention of the later-as we see in Cotton's Compleat Gamester (1674), in which he gives the following excellent definition of the word: -"Gaming is an enchanting witchery, gotten between Idleness and Avarice: an itching disease, that makes some scratch the head, whilst others, as if they were bitten by a Tarantula, are laughing themselves to death; or, lastly, it is a paralytical distemper, which, seizing the arm, the man cannot chuse but shake his elbow.

Book Synopsis Pandaemonium 1660–1886 by : Humphrey Jennings
Download or read book Pandaemonium 1660–1886 written by Humphrey Jennings and published by Icon Books Ltd. This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collecting texts taken from letters, diaries, literature, scientific journals and reports, Pandæmonium gathers a beguiling narrative as it traces the development of the machine age in Britain. Covering the years between 1660 and 1886, it offers a rich tapestry of human experience, from eyewitness reports of the Luddite Riots and the Peterloo Massacre to more intimate accounts of child labour, Utopian communities, the desecration of the natural world, ground-breaking scientific experiments, and the coming of the railways. Humphrey Jennings, co-founder of the Mass Observation movement of the 1930s and acclaimed documentary film-maker, assembled an enthralling narrative of this key period in Britain's national consciousness. The result is a highly original artistic achievement in its own right. Thanks to the efforts of his daughter, Marie-Louise Jennings, Pandæmonium was originally published in 1985, and in 2012 it was the inspiration behind Danny Boyle's electrifying Opening Ceremony for the London Olympic Games. Frank Cottrell Boyce, who wrote the scenario for the ceremony, contributes a revealing new foreword for this edition.

This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a tourist guide that settles on Oxford as a central location from which to embark on a Tour to either North or South Wales, and to which transportation is now established from all regions of England and Scotland. And, if the Tourist's undertaking is begun early in the season, he has plenty of time to enjoy it, and he will have the best chance of seeing this seat of learning and nursery of the arts; the elegant piles of buildings that Oxford exhibits, the stores of learned wealth that it possesses, and the beautiful paintings that adorn its halls and colleges, are all described so cheaply and thoroughly in the Oxford Guides, that to attempt to do so in this work would be impossible. In the summer, the Bodleian or University Library, one of Europe's largest, as well as the Picture Gallery, are open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 3 to 5 p.m.; in the winter, only until 3 p.m. On the north side of the Schools, the Arundel marbles are housed in a huge room. The famed Radcliffe Library, a splendid edifice with a gorgeous dome, is located south of the Schools in a lovely setting. Even if only to see the painting of our Saviour wearing his cross, said to be painted by Guido, St. Mary Magdalene College in the city's east end, along the Cherwell River, is well worth a visit.
