Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Calyx, 1912, Vol. 18 As a student of the law, as an advocate at the bar, and as a teacher of the law. Professor Staples is doubtless best known to the general public. For many years he has been regarded as one of the most learned and able lawyers of Virginia. He has been. From the beginning. An untiring student of the law. He has the legal mind and the legal temperament. As an advocate at the bar, he was reckoned as a master of the Socratic art. I have frequently heard that he had few equals in examining witnesses. As a teacher of the law. He is painstaking, exact, conscientious and thorough. The students rally about him. They are with him in the class-room, on the campus. And in his home. They love him. They trust 'him. They seek his advice on any and on every conceivable subject, all the way from the complex problem of matrimony to the simple matter of suggesting the most available remedy lot a bad cold. I know of no man who com bines in a finer way the charm and grace of the old time and the freedom and direct ness of the new. This combination of qualities in a teacher means, of course. That he is gifted with the genius of getting close to young men. It is a fact that service to young men is, with Professor Staples, an instinct, a passion, a creed. On the surface of closely related species differs in degree rather than in kind, and hence does not show changes sufficiently definite to furnish satisfactory results. The stems of crinoids often show very definite and well-marked changes from the proximal to the distal portion, but it is so comparatively rare to find the crinoid stems intact for any considerable distance from the calyx that they are only occasionally helpful. We have been seriously handicapped by being compelled by unusual circumstances, to await the beginning of the work of editing the annual until late in the year, though we make no apology for that. While it has been a laborious task to compile the book, it has indeed been a pleasant one, and it is the earnest hope of the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crescent, 1914 Five years ago the Crescent Society of the St Joseph High School pre sented the first edition of the annual known as the Crescent. The enterprise was not very successful, and was discontinued; so it remained for the class of 1914 to continue the work with great hope and confidence of its success. We hope that we may have improved upon that first annual to some degree, though we realize that ours cannot be infallible, and that many more Crescent annuals must be published before a perfect one can be formed. There is an old story of a little page in the hall of a great Knight, who desired to prove himself worthy of knighthood. One evening, while pondering how he could best attain his desire, he heard a call afar off telling him to keep the compass needle of his soul true to the north star of his great ambition, and that although his trials would be many, in the end he could not fail to succeed. He set out full of hope, but he did not realize how hard the road would be and how often he would be attacked by the monsters: discouragement and despair; but his steadfast purpose helped him to overcome these perils, and the day finally came wh'en he could at last say, I have attained success.
