"What subtle strange message had come to her out of the West? Carley Burch laid the letter in her lap and gazed dreamily through the window. It was a day typical of early April in New York, rather cold and gray, with steely sunlight. Spring breathed in the air, but the women passing along Fifty-seventh Street wore furs and wraps. She heard the distant clatter of an L train and then the hum of a motor car. A hurdy-gurdy jarred into the interval of quiet." - Zane Grey, "The Call of the Canyon" Zane Grey (1872-1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that were a basis for the Western genre in literature and the arts. With his veracity and emotional intensity, he connected with millions of readers worldwide, during peacetime and war, and inspired many Western writers who followed him. Grey was a major force in shaping the myths of the Old West; his books and stories were adapted into other media, such as film and TV productions. He was the author of more than 90 books, some published posthumously and/or based on serials originally published in magazines.

Book Synopsis The Grand Canyon of Arizona by : George Wharton James
Download or read book The Grand Canyon of Arizona written by George Wharton James and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grand Canyon of Arizona: How to See It Upwards of ten years ago I sat on the south rim of the Grand Canyon and wrote "In and Around the Grand Canyon." In that book I included much that more than a decade of wandering up and down the trails of this great abyss had taught me. At that rime the only accommodations for sightseers were stage lines or private conveyance from Flagstaff and Ash Fork, and, on arrival at the Canyon, the crude hotel-camps at Hance's, Grand View, Bright Angel, and Bass's. The railway north from Williams was being built. Everything was crude and primitive. Now the railway is completed and has become an integral part of the great Santa Fe System, with at least two trains a day each way carrying Pullman sleepers, chair cars and coaches. At Bright Angel, where the railway deposits its passengers at the rim of the Canyon, stands El Tovar Hotel, erected by the railway company at a cost of over a quarter of a million dollars, which is equipped and conducted by Fred Harvey. Yet El Tovar is more like a country club than a hotel, in many respects, and, to that extent, is better. New roads and trails have been opened up, and further provision made for the entertainment of travelers visiting the Canyon. Hence, for several years, there has been a growing demand for a revision of "In and Around the Grand Canyon," is still as helpful to the traveler and general reader as ever, there has been a growing demand for a new book which could give the information needed by the traveler who comes under the new conditions, telling hm how he may best avail himself of them. Download or read book In Around the Grand Canyon written by George Wharton James and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Around the Grand Canyon: The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in Arizona Since this book was written and published in 1900 it has been reprinted a number of times and several thousands of copies have been sold. Although the author issued in 1910 an entirely new book on the same - "The Grand Canyon of Arizona" - there is still a steady and constant demand for this larger and earlier work. It has been deemed appropriate, however, before issuing a new edition, that part of one chapter should be entirely rewritten, and an appendix added, which will contain much new and important information. A new map has also been provided which the tourist or general reader will find of material help. The reasons for these enlargements and additions are found in the many and varied changes that have taken place in the Grand Canyon; not in the Canyon itself, but in the hotel accommodations, trails, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
