Book Synopsis Editing Mediaeval Texts from a Different Angle by : Lara Sels
Download or read book Editing Mediaeval Texts from a Different Angle written by Lara Sels and published by Peeters. This book was released on 2018 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editing Mediaeval Texts from a Different Angle contains a selection of papers delivered at two workshops devoted to particular cases of text editing: the ATTEMT Workshop held at King's College, London (19-20 December 2013) explored issues involved in the edition of texts with a multilingual tradition (covering Greek, Latin, Syriac, Arabic, and Slavonic), while the ATTEST Workshop (University of Regensburg, 11-12 December 2015) dealt with tradition and innovation in the field of palaeoslavistic text editing. Central to the discussions reflected in this volume are general questions on variability, textual dependency and transformation, as well as methodological issues raised by the encounter of different scholarly traditions in ecdotics and by the advent of the digital. The volume opens with a honorary section for Prof. Francis J. Thomson, who in his influential scholarly work has focused on mediaeval Slavonic translation literature. The section not only contains his rich academic bibliography, but also a chronological Checklist of Slavonic Translations from the 9thcentury up to the immediate post-Petrine period (1725-1730).

Book Synopsis The Hymnographic Book of Tropologion by : Svetlana Kujumdzieva
Download or read book The Hymnographic Book of Tropologion written by Svetlana Kujumdzieva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tropologion is considered the earliest known extant chant book from the early Christian world which was in use until the twelfth century. The study of this book is still in its infancy. It has generally been believed that the book has survived in Georgian translation under the name ‘ladgari’ but similar books have been discovered in Greek, Syriac and Armenian. All the copies clearly show that the spread and the use of the book were much greater than we had previously assumed and the Georgian ladgari is only one of its many versions. The study of these issues unquestionably confirms the earliest stage of the compilation of the book, in Jerusalem or its environs, and shows its uninterrupted development from Jerusalem to the Stoudios monastery, the most important monastery of Constantinople. Over time many new pieces and new authors were added to the Tropologion. It is almost certain that it was the Stoudios school of poet-composers that divided the content of the Tropologion and compiled separate collections of books, each one containing a major liturgical cycle. In the beginning all of the volumes kept the old title but in the tenth century the copies of the book were renamed, probably according to the liturgical repertory included, and by the thirteenth century the title ‘Tropologion’ is no longer found in the Greek sources as it became superfluous, and fell out of use.

Vol. 4 : These documents, written in Ancient Khotan, but in a dialect of the Sakas, or Indo-Scythians, were found by the late Sven Hedin and his colleagues in Khotan. They are literary texts, business letters and military orders of the 8th century AD. Professor Bailey has added a translation and commentary has also written an introduction. Vol. 5 : In the first decade of this century numerous documents were found, a considerable number written in Ancient Khotan, but in a dialect of the Śakas, or Indo-Scythians, who from the first century BC to the third century AD were dominant in North-western India. This fifth volume completed the printing of the texts. When it was published in 1963, it contained a large number of fragments and other pieces published for the first time, as well as the Hoernle Collection, the Samguata-Sutra folios and the Karma Text. Vol. 6 : The Book of Zambasta is Professor Bailey's name for a collection of Śaka-Khotanese texts previously designated as E. The texts were first published in Berlin in the period 1933-6. The prolexis is a close commentary on the establishment of the text. It contains all the evidence for the interpretation of words not previously understood. Vol. 7 : Sir Harold Bailey has studied and interpreted the northern area of Indian Buddhist culture in the Khotan Saka documents of Central Asia dated between the fifth and tenth centuries AD. In this volume he discusses the form, provenance and identity of the peoples known to the Court of the Kingdom of Khotan and included within the Khotanese texts.

He also added a number of important texts which were identified after the publication of the first edition.

Book Synopsis Songs of the Frontier Warriors by : Robert Elsie
Download or read book Songs of the Frontier Warriors written by Robert Elsie and published by Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Epics of Gilgamesh, Homer, Vergil, Shahnameh, are sources of our knowledge of religious beliefs. This epic is a welcome introduction to the spiritual world of the Albanians as they fought the crusades. The "Songs of the Frontier Warrior is the first English-language translation ever made of Albanian epic verse. As the product of a little-known culture and a difficult, rarely studied language, the Albanian epic has tended to remain in the shadow of the Serbo-Croatian, or more properly, Bosnian epic, with which it has undeniable affinities. This translation may thus be regarded as an initial attempt to rectify the imbalance and to give scholars and the reading public in general an opportunity to delve into the exotic world of the northern Albanian tribes. The present bilingual edition offers a broad selection of the best known songs. Also included are an introduction, a glossaries of terms and sources, and a selective bibliography.
