Book Synopsis Economic Interests Vs Political Interventions: The Case Of Economic Relations Between Mainland China And Taiwan by : Qi Luo
Download or read book Economic Interests Vs Political Interventions: The Case Of Economic Relations Between Mainland China And Taiwan written by Qi Luo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-08-14 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the impact of political interventions made by Beijing and Taipei in recent years on the development of cross-Straits economic relations. The study finds little evidence that either the missile firings carried out by Beijing in 1995 and 1996 or the mainland policy review conducted by Taipei since 1996 has slowed down the growth of trade and investment activities between mainland China and Taiwan. In fact, the trade dependence ratios for the two economies have continued to increase since 1995. Although the level of Taiwans committed investment in the mainland has dropped considerably in recent years, it has moved largely in line with the general trend of total FDI in China. The synchronism between Taiwan investment and other foreign investment suggests that the Taiwan investors, like other foreign investors, responded mainly to macroeconomic conditions and policies in the mainland, rather than to the directives from the Taiwan authorities, when they made their investment decisions. This is due to the fact that the economic logic of pursuing cross-Straits economic activities is so powerful that Taipei's restrictive policy toward investment in the mainland has often been ignored or diluted by the Taiwanese private business community.

Book Synopsis New Thinking about the Taiwan Issue by : Jean-Marc F. Blanchard
Download or read book New Thinking about the Taiwan Issue written by Jean-Marc F. Blanchard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Taiwan question" has long been considered one of the most complicated and explosive issues in global politics. In recent years, however, relations between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland have improved substantially to the surprise of many. In this ground-breaking collection, distinguished contributors from the US, Asia, and Europe seek to go beyond the standard "recitation of facts" that often characterizes studies focusing on the Beijing-Taipei dyad. Rather, they employ a variety of theories as well as both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to analyze the ebbs and flows of the Taiwan issue. Their discussions clearly illuminate why there is a "Taiwan Problem," why conflict did not escalate to war between 2000 and 2008, and why cross-Strait relations improved after 2008. The book further reveals the limits of realism as a device to gain traction into the Taiwan issue, demonstrates the importance of taking into account domestic political variables, and shows how theory can be used to advance the cause of better China-Taiwan relations and to analyze the potential for future conflict over Taiwan. New Thinking about the Taiwan Issue is essential reading not only for students, scholars and practitioners with an interest in studying relations across the Taiwan Strait, but also for any reader interested in economics, international relations, comparative politics or political theory.

Book Synopsis Ethical and Social Marketing in Asia by : Bang Nguyen
Download or read book Ethical and Social Marketing in Asia written by Bang Nguyen and published by Chandos Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing interest in firms’ adoption of ethical and social marketing approaches among academics and practitioners alike. Ethical Marketing is the application of ethics into the marketing process, and Social Marketing is a concept that seeks to influence a target audience for the greater social good. Ethical and Social Marketing in Asia examines this so-far unexplored area, investigating why differing cultures and consumption behaviours require different emphasis in different markets. The diversity of the Asian countries provides a perplexing environment to the development and management of ethical and social marketing. The belief that bottom line profits is enough for a company, is often not favourably viewed by Asian countries emphasising collective, social and long term benefits for the people and country. Due to these interesting characteristics and complexities, the study of ethical and social marketing in Asia is a timely topic. The first chapters introduce Ethical Marketing in Asia, followed by case studies of how the approach is used across 14 diverse economies, geographically based on ‘clusters’; North East, (China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea), South East (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia) and South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh). The second part discusses Social Marketing using the same sequence of regions and economies and the third part explores the unique link to Fairness Management in Asia, followed by a conclusion. explores the nature of ethical and social marketing from an Asian perspective discusses current ethical and social marketing researches and practices in different areas, industries, commercial and non-commercial sectors serves as an invaluable resource for marketing academics and practitioners requiring more than anecdotal evidence of different ethical and social marketing applications compares and contrasts unethical situations covering important aspects related to ethics, society and fairness includes an interesting mix of theory, research findings and practices
Book Synopsis Chinese Economic Statecraft by : William J. Norris
Download or read book Chinese Economic Statecraft written by William J. Norris and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chinese Economic Statecraft, William J. Norris introduces an innovative theory that pinpoints how states employ economic tools of national power to pursue their strategic objectives. Norris shows what Chinese economic statecraft is, how it works, and why it is more or less effective. Norris provides an accessible tool kit to help us better understand important economic developments in the People’s Republic of China. He links domestic Chinese political economy with the international ramifications of China’s economic power as a tool for realizing China’s strategic foreign policy interests. He presents a novel approach to studying economic statecraft that calls attention to the central challenge of how the state is (or is not) able to control and direct the behavior of economic actors. Norris identifies key causes of Chinese state control through tightly structured, substate and crossnational comparisons of business-government relations. These cases range across three important arenas of China’s grand strategy that prominently feature a strategic role for economics: China’s efforts to secure access to vital raw materials located abroad, Mainland relations toward Taiwan, and China’s sovereign wealth funds. Norris spent more than two years conducting field research in China and Taiwan during which he interviewed current and former government officials, academics, bankers, journalists, advisors, lawyers, and businesspeople. The ideas in this book are applicable beyond China and help us to understand how states exercise international economic power in the twenty-first century.
