Book Synopsis The Russian Empire 1450-1801 by : Nancy Shields Kollmann
Download or read book The Russian Empire 1450-1801 written by Nancy Shields Kollmann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Russian identity and historical experience has been largely shaped by Russia's imperial past: an empire that was founded in the early modern era and endures in large part today. The Russian Empire 1450-1801 surveys how the areas that made up the empire were conquered and how they were governed. It considers the Russian empire a 'Eurasian empire', characterized by a 'politics of difference': the rulers and their elites at the center defined the state's needs minimally - with control over defense, criminal law, taxation, and mobilization of resources - and otherwise tolerated local religions, languages, cultures, elites, and institutions. The center related to communities and religions vertically, according each a modicum of rights and autonomies, but didn't allow horizontal connections across nobilities, townsmen, or other groups potentially with common interests to coalesce. Thus, the Russian empire was multi-ethnic and multi-religious; Nancy Kollmann gives detailed attention to the major ethnic and religious groups, and surveys the government's strategies of governance - centralized bureaucracy, military reform, and a changed judicial system. The volume pays particular attention to the dissemination of a supranational ideology of political legitimacy in a variety of media - written sources and primarily public ritual, painting, and particularly architecture. Beginning with foundational features, such as geography, climate, demography, and geopolitical situation, The Russian Empire 1450-1801 explores the empire's primarily agrarian economy, serfdom, towns and trade, as well as the many religious groups - primarily Orthodoxy, Islam, and Buddhism. It tracks the emergence of an 'Imperial nobility' and a national self-consciousness that was, by the end of the eighteenth century, distinctly imperial, embracing the diversity of the empire's many peoples and cultures.

Book Synopsis Libertinage in Russian Culture and Literature by : Alexei Lalo
Download or read book Libertinage in Russian Culture and Literature written by Alexei Lalo and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-09-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the previous scholarship on Russia's literary discourses of sexuality and eroticism in the Silver Age was built on applying European theoretical models (from psychoanalysis to feminist theory) to Russia's modernization. This book argues that, at the turn into the twentieth century, Russian popular culture for the first time found itself in direct confrontation with the traditional high cultures of the upper classes and intelligentsia, producing modernized representations of sexuality. This Russian tradition of conflicted representations, heretofore misassessed by literary history, emerges as what Foucault would call a full-blown “bio-history” of Russian culture: a history of indigenous representations of sexuality and the eroticized body capable of innovation on its own terms, not just those derivative from Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS OF RUSSIAN PLAYS, the four-act comedy in verse Woe from Wit skewers staid, nineteenth century Russian society, and it positively teems with "winged phrases" that are essential colloquialisms for students of Russian and Russian culture. Presented here in bilingual format (English and accented Russian on facing pages), Griboyedov's masterpiece becomes newly accessible to Russophiles of all levels and abilities. "Winged phrases" are highlighted throughout; archaic words and important historical references are footnoted; and a thorough biographical introduction prefaces the play. You will never regret any time spent reading, learning, and understanding Woe from Wit - few works of Russian literature have had such a lasting impact on the Russian mindset and soul.
Book Synopsis Dictionary of Russian Literature by : William E. Harkins
Download or read book Dictionary of Russian Literature written by William E. Harkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1957, provides essential information on the entire field of Russian literature, as well as a great deal on literary criticism, journalism, philosophy, theatre and related subjects. Russian literary tradition has tended to blur the distinctions between social and political criticism on one hand, and literary criticism on the other, and even, to an extent, the distinction between philosophy and literature. Although intended primarily as a reference work, this book also contains much critical analysis.
Book Synopsis White Nights by : Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Download or read book White Nights written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of short fiction from one of nineteenth-century Russia’s greatest novelists, the author of Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov. These short stories offer a dazzling glimpse of life in the Russian Empire and penetrating portraits of unforgettable characters. In the titular story, a lonely man has a chance meeting with a sad young woman. Learning that she is in love with another, the man vows to help them reunite, while secretly hoping she’ll realize they are meant to be together. “Polzunkov” is a man who doesn’t mind playing the buffoon, and when he tells the story of how one of his April Fools’ jokes backfired—robbing him of the woman he hoped to marry—he gets the biggest laugh of all. In “A Christmas Tree and a Wedding,” a holiday party gives one guest the chance to compliment his host and hostess on their charming daughter, who just happens to be a future heiress. Five years later, his investment pays off. Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s skill at depicting the madcap, desperate, and malicious motivations of his characters is on full display in this remarkable collection of stories.

Book Synopsis A Karamazov Companion by : Victor Terras
Download or read book A Karamazov Companion written by Victor Terras and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text of The Brothers Karamazov is removed from English-speaking readers today not only by time but also by linguistic and cultural boundaries. Victor Terras's companion work provides readers with a richer understanding of the Dostoevsky novel as the expression of a philosophy and a work of art. In his introduction, Terras outlines the genesis, main ideas, and structural peculiarities of the novel as well as Dostoevsky's political, philosophical, and aesthetic stance. The detailed commentary takes the reader through the novel, clarifying aspects of Russian life, the novel's sociopolitical background, and a number of polemic issues. Terras identifies and explains hundreds of literary and biblical quotations and allusions. He discusses symbols, recurrent images, and structural stylistic patterns, including those lost in English translation.
