Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Buckling of a Thick Circular Plate Using a Non-Linear Theory The Object of this paper is to study the stability of equilibrium of an isotropic circular cylinder when compressed along its curved lateral surface. The compression on the curved part Of the boundary is assumed to be such that the generators of the cylinder remain Vertical straight lines, but so that no shear stress is developed: it is as though the cylinder were compressed by shrinking a very stiff greased ring down on it. The plane faces are assumed to be free of stress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The buckling of a circular plate subjected to a uniformly distributed compressive edge loading while imbedded in a non-linear elastic foundation is studied. Particular attention is given to the character of solutions in the neighborhood of the points of bifurcation. A perturbation procedure is used to determine the manner in which the buckled solutions depend upon the properties of the foundation. (Author).

Book excerpt: A theoretical and numerical analysis is presented for the elastic deflections and stresses of an initially flat circular plate with clamped fixed edge, under uniform normal pressure. In considering large deflection bending, i.e. deflections up to several thicknesses of the plate, we are led to two coupled partial differential equations which are given in the literature by Foppl and von Karman. We attempt an approximative solution of these equations by representing each of the unknown functions of these equations as a formal series of eigenfunctions. We choose the most natural set of eigenfunctions, the Bessel functions of index one, each of which individually satisfied all but one of the boundary conditions. We then calculate, by means of computer methods, deflection and stress results which turn out to be in strikingly good agreement with earlier theoretical and experimental results in the literature. All of this is accomplished with but a five or nine mode solution, which can be found with very little effort. (Author).

The main body of work in this area is concerned with the control of time-dependent displacements and stresses, and assumes linear elastic conditions, namely linear elastic material behavior and small defor- tion. See, e. g. , [1]–[3], the collections of papers [4, 5], and references therein. On the other hand, in the present paper we consider the static optimal control of a structure made of a nonlinear elastic material and und- going large deformation. An important application is the suppression of static or quasi-static elastic deformation in flexible space structures such as parts of satellites by the use of control loads [6]. Solar rad- tion and radiation from other sources induce a temperature field in the structure, which in turn generates an elastic displacement field. The displacements must usually satisfy certain limitations dictated by the allowed working conditions of various orientation-sensitive instruments and antennas in the space vehicle. For example, a parabolic reflector may cease to be effective when undergoing large deflection. The elastic deformation can be reduced by use of control loads, which may be imp- mented via mechanically-based actuators or more modern piezoelectric devices. When the structure under consideration is made of a rubb- like material and is undergoing large deformation, nonlinear material and geometric effects must be taken into account in the analysis.
