Book Synopsis England's Rare Mosses and Liverworts by : Ron D. Porley
Download or read book England's Rare Mosses and Liverworts written by Ron D. Porley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to cover England's rare and threatened mosses and liverworts, collectively known as bryophytes. As a group, they are the most ancient land plants and occupy a unique position in the colonization of the Earth by plant life. However, many are at risk from habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and other factors. Britain is one of the world's best bryologically recorded areas, yet its mosses and liverworts are not well known outside a small band of experts. This has meant that conservation action has tended to lag behind that of more charismatic groups such as birds and mammals. Of the 916 different types of bryophyte in England, 87 are on the British Red List and are regarded as threatened under the strict criteria of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. This book aims to raise awareness by providing stunning photographs--many never before published--of each threatened species, as well as up-to-date profiles of 84 of them, including status, distribution, history, and conservation measures. The book looks at what bryophytes are, why they are important and useful, and what makes them rare; it also examines threats, extinctions, ex situ conservation techniques, legislation, and the impact of the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity. Provides the first treatment of England's rare and threatened mosses and liverworts Features stunning photographs--many never before published--of each species and many of their habitats Treats each species in a handy and attractive double-page layout Includes up-to-date profiles of 84 species, including status, distribution, history, and conservation measures Presents the first overview of English bryophyte conservation Offers invaluable guidance to people working in conservation in England, the British Isles, Europe, and beyond

Download or read book Bryophyte Ecology written by A. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an increasing interest in bryophyte ecology over the past 100 or so years, initially of a phytosociological nature but, additionally, in recent years, of an experimental nature as well. Early studies of bryophyte communities have led to detailed investigations into the relationships between the plants and their environment. Ecological papers, the large number of which is evidenced by the length of the bibliographies in the subsequent chapters, have appeared in numerous journals. Yet, apart from review chapters, by H. Gams and P. W. Richards in Manual of Bryology, edited b:; H. Verdoorn in 1932 and chapters in E. V. Watson's Structure and Life of Bryophytes, Prem Puri's Bryophytes - A Broad Perspective and D. H. S. Richardson's The Biology of Mosses, published in 1972,1973 and 1981 respectively, no general accounts of bryophyte ecology have been published. Although the Bryophyta is a relatively small division of plants, with between 14000 and 21000 species the interest that they have aroused is out of all proportion to the size either of the plants or of the division. It is evident, however, that despite their relative insigni ficance they play an important ecological role, especially in extreme environments and, in the case of bryophytes in tropical cloud forests and of Sphagnum, may even be a dominant factor in the ecology of the area concerned.
Book Synopsis The geographical relationships of British and Irish bryophytes by : M O. Hill
Download or read book The geographical relationships of British and Irish bryophytes written by M O. Hill and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bryophyte flora of the British Isles comprises four native hornworts, 284 liverworts and 716 mosses. These species are about two thirds of the European total. Past phytogeographical studies have concentrated particularly on Atlantic bryophytes, especially liverworts. The theory that these species can be divided into two distinct categories, one of Holarctic origin and the other of tropical and Southern Hemisphere origin, is confirmed for the British Isles. A system of elements established by us for British and Irish vascular plants is based on distribution in northern and western Eurasia, dividing the flora up first into latitudinal categories and secondly into longitudinal ones. For bryophytes, two extra elements have been added, Hyperoceanic Temperate and Hyperoceanic Southern-temperate. About 40% of the flora belongs to arctic and boreal elements and 20% to southern elements. The remaining 40% belongs to elements of the temperate broadleaved forest zone including those that extend into the boreal zone. The composition of each element is considered in terms of world distribution, habitats and distribution in the British Isles. Most species have enormous world ranges; only about 5% are endemic to Europe. Very few species are convincingly continental in that they are commoner in eastern Europe than the west. Several southern species, however, are more common in semi-arid continental interiors than in the relatively humid regions of northwest Europe. Only six liverworts and 13 mosses are known in the British Isles as established introductions; all except four originate from temperate or subtropical regions outside Europe.

Download or read book Bryophyte Biology written by Bernard Goffinet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bryophyte Biology provides an extensive overview of the hornworts, liverworts, and mosses; diverse groups of land plants that occupy a great variety of habitats throughout the world. This edition covers essential aspects of bryophyte biology, from morphology, physiological ecology and conservation, to speciation, and genomics. Revised classifications incorporate contributions from recent phylogenetic studies. Six new chapters complement fully updated chapters from the original book to provide a completely up-to-date resource. New chapters focus on the contributions of Physcomitrella to plant genomic research, population ecology of bryophytes, mechanisms of drought tolerance, a phylogenomic perspective on land plant evolution, and problems and progress of bryophyte speciation and conservation. Written by leaders in the field, this book offers an authoritative treatment of bryophyte biology, with rich citation of the current literature, suitable for advanced students and researchers.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Bryophytes by : Alain Vanderpoorten
Download or read book Introduction to Bryophytes written by Alain Vanderpoorten and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-28 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bryophytes were a pivotal step in land plant evolution, and their significance in the regulation of ecosystems and the conservation of biodiversity is becoming increasingly acknowledged. This introductory textbook assumes no prior knowledge of bryophyte biology, making it ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as amateur botanists. The authors expertly summarise the diversity of bryophytes and outline recent advances in our understanding of their evolutionary history, their ecological roles and preferences, their distribution patterns and conservation needs. The text is highly illustrated throughout, with boxed summaries of topics of current relevance in bryophyte biology, and a glossary of technical terms.
