Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Brown Papers With the bed took from under her, as is a painful position I should say, tho' p'raps them as is used to it don't feel it, as would be my death, to say nothing of the disgrace, as I'm sure sure some people ain't no teelin', or that mrs. Warne never could have had the face for to put up Genteel Apartments, when her place was a downright dog hole, and as to twelve shillings a week, it was highway robbery downright; and no wonder as parties always bolted, tho' as to her a-saying as that brought her to ruin, it's rubbish, for if ever there was a woman as took a drop, she was the party, a-sendin' out the girl for it all hours, downright brazen, as a bottle in the apron always looks bad in my opinion; but if you want to know any more about me ask the neighbours right and left, and you'll hear a plenty, as I've had to threaten with the law once or twice; so you look out as you don't go a-printing any things as is like a label on me, for I've got friends in the law, thro' one a-being a porter at a law stationer's these fifteen years, and my own nlece's boy is in chambers in the Temple, as is a easy place at six shillings a week, tho' lonesome, thro' the gentleman always a-promising to be back in [ten minutes, and never a-turning up no more. Mind, I don't want none of your flattering butter, a-talking about my wirtues, and as to your a-sayin' as people likes me, that's fall very well, but why ever shouldn't they, as never did them no 'arm, nor wouldn't hurt a fly was it ever so? Only, whatever you say, don't ge about a-statin' as isn't true, for I never had a con sumption, as you meant for to hawk me about onbook-stalls, tho' I'm sure there's a many I could give ideas to in welcome, as don't seem to have none in their own heads; tho' Iwill say as book-learnin' don't do much good, except to them as has their senses about 'em, and then books isn't necessary; but parties 'as often told me as I spoke like a book, as I'm sure any one is welcome for to hear. So no more at present, thro' mr. Giddens, as I've got to write it, being obligated for to go, and I 'turns him many thanks thro' 'aving took that pains over it, and remains, yours respectful. The careless papers written at an early period, and never seen since the printer's boy carried them away, are brought back and laid at the father's door, and he cannot, if he would, forget or disown his own children. Slimmens' Window: And Other Papers But, if the bright yellow of the bonnet is faded, and its sky-blue bows are scarcely discernible, so have the roses faded that once bloomed on the cheeks of Miss Slimmens; and she has been compelled, for the last ten years at least, to resort to "artificials." She bleaches and trims to perfection - herself, as well as her bonnets; despite which, some of her neighbors have been beard to insinuate that the smell of brimstone about her premises did not proceed entirely from the covered barrel which sets in the back yard, and in which there are usually two or three wrecks of Leghorn hanging, as slimp and melancholy as the prospects of Miss Slimmens herself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Brown Alumni Monthly, Vol. 1: December, 1900 At this session of the Academy twenty-one members were present, and some twenty papers were read. Prof. Packard presented two papers, and Prof. Barus three. All the papers were naturally devoted to highly specialized scientific topics, which were treated in an exceedingly technical manner. On the evening of the last day of the ses sion the faculty tendered the members of the Academy a reception in the Lyman Gymnasium. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assembled here for the first time in one volume are forty classic papers that have laid the foundations of modern ecology. Whether by posing new problems, demonstrating important effects, or stimulating new research, these papers have made substantial contributions to an understanding of ecological processes, and they continue to influence the field today. The papers span nearly nine decades of ecological research, from 1887 on, and are organized in six sections: foundational papers, theoretical advances, synthetic statements, methodological developments, field studies, and ecological experiments. Selections range from Connell's elegant account of experiments with barnacles to Watt's encyclopedic natural history, from a visionary exposition by Grinnell of the concept of niche to a seminal essay by Hutchinson on diversity. Six original essays by contemporary ecologists and a historian of ecology place the selections in context and discuss their continued relevance to current research. This combination of classic papers and fresh commentaries makes Foundations of Ecology both a convenient reference to papers often cited today and an essential guide to the intellectual and conceptual roots of the field. Published with the Ecological Society of America.

From classics by Georges-Louis LeClerc Compte de Buffon, Alexander von Humboldt, and Charles Darwin to equally seminal contributions by Ernst Mayr, Robert MacArthur, and E. O. Wilson, these papers and book excerpts not only reveal biogeography's historical roots but also trace its theoretical and empirical development. Foundations of Biogeography will be an ideal introduction to the field for beginning students and an essential reference for established scholars of biogeography, ecology, and evolution. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brown's Retreat: And Other Stories Brown's Retreat flashed upon them all of a sudden. The neighborhood went to sleep, one night, guileless and innocent, - that is, theoretically guileless and innocent, - and awoke in the morning to the consciousness that Brown's Retreat was in its midst. There was considerable mystery and confusion attending the want of knowledge whether Brown's Retreat meant that Brown had retreated, or if it was a general invitation into the "retreat," or if Brown was a practical joker and Brown's Retreat merely a gentle stimulant to that weakness. Edgerly was a prosperous town, with a harbor, an East India trade, and a charming collection of waterside characters. It had also a state-prison that was kept on the most desirable plan, where five hundred gentlemen were lodged who had differences with their country's laws. Once in a while, curiously enough, one of these gentlemen would escape. There were other worthy institutions in Edgerly, of which it is, however, unnecessary to speak.
