Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Tax-Payers' Rights N a previous work The British Taxpayer and his Wrongs - published in 1888 under the nom de plume of Finance, I promised to bring out a second part dealing with the Rights and Remedies of tax-payers, showing that in Sociology, in Statecraft (or the Science of Government), and in Political Economy, there were many sound and well-known axioms or principles, which might serve as a safe basis on which to found an equitable and practical Tax System and I proposed further to submit a scheme harmonising with those principles, to answer the objections raised against proposals of the kind, and to suggest means for gradually introducing the system with as little disturbance as possible to existing fiscal arrangements. But examination of the more recent literature on the subject showed that new principles were affecting the social and political problems of the day; communistic doctrines are being advanced with little or no disguise, especially by German and Austrian economic writers, and legislation in some countries, our own amongst others, is responding in increasing degree to their influence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern parliamentary democracy first developed in Great Britain and Britons played a major role in spreading democracy around the world ¿ for example, through the Commonwealth. However, at the start of the 21st century, Britain itself was no longer a fully independent democratic country. As part of the European Union bloc, unelected and immovable foreign authorities determined a large part of its laws, policies, and taxes. Domestically meanwhile, such things as extra-parliamentary bureaucratic lawmaking, curbs on local political autonomy, moves from direct to indirect representation, and restrictions on the private funding and advertizing of political parties had diminished democracy. This study provides a detailed review of the main political independence and constitutional reform requirements for restoring and extending democracy in present-day Britain. CONTENTS: 1. THE RESTORATION & EXTENSION OF BRITISH DEMOCRACY: AN OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN REQUIREMENTS 2. NATIONAL POLITICAL INDEPENDENCE & DEMOCRACY: WITHDRAWAL FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION 3. Book excerpt: "We all know the government taxes our income. Federal, state, and local taxes are withheld by employers, as are Social Security payments. But what about the many other ways the government covertly drains money from our wallets? Have you studied your cell phone bill? Customers in New York State pay an average of 24.36% in combined taxes on their wireless bills. They’re also charged for obscure services they didn’t ask for and don’t understand, like a universal service fund fee, an FCC compliance fee, a line service fee, and an emergency services fee. These aren’t taxes, strictly speaking. The government imposes these administrative and regulatory costs, and your wireless provider passes them along to you. What about your cable bill? Your power bill? Your trash bill? The cost of groceries, a gallon of gas, a cab ride, a hotel stay, and a movie ticket are all inflated by hidden fees. How much of what you pay at the grocery store, pump, airport, or the box office is really an indirect tax? In a series of short, pointed, fact-laden, humorous chapters, Kristin Tate exposes how up to half of your income is siphoned straight into federal, state, and city government coffers--and also where these hidden taxes and fees come from."--Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: As the world falls apart, a deadly conspiracy comes together . . . THE BRAND NEW 2023 THRILLER FROM BRITAIN'S TOP POLITICAL JOURNALIST - NOW AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER IN HARDBACK, EBOOK & AUDIOBOOK. ______________________ London, 2007. It's summer in the City: the economy is booming, profits are up and the stock market sits near record highs. But journalist Gil Peck is a lone voice worrying it can't last. Deep in the plumbing of the financial system, he has noticed strange things happening which could threaten the whole economy. But nobody wants to hear it: not the politicians taking credit for an end to boom and bust, not the bankers pocketing vast bonuses, not even Gil's bosses at the BBC, who think it's irrelevant. When Gil gets a tip-off that a small northern bank has run out of money, everything changes. His report sparks the first run on a UK bank in 140 years. The next day, Marilyn Krol, a director of the Bank of England dies in an apparent suicide. For Gil, it's personal. Marilyn was his lover: was his scoop connected to her suicide? Or is there something more sinister in her death? Gil is determined to find out. The more he investigates, the more he is drawn into the rotten heart of the financial system, where old school ties and secret Oxbridge societies lubricate vast and illegal conflicts of interest. The whole economy has been built on a house of cards, and Gil is threatening to bring it down. When simply reporting the facts can make or break fortunes, Gil has to ask himself: is he crossing the line between journalist and participant? Are his own conflicts of interest making him reckless? And in a world ruled by greed where nothing and no-one is too big to fail, what price will he pay for uncovering the truth? Book excerpt: Administrative Law provides a sophisticated but highly accessible account of a complex area of law of great contemporary relevance and increasing importance. Written in a clear and flowing style, the text has been radically reorganized and extensively rewritten to present administrative law as a framework for public administration. After an exploration of the nature, province, and sources of administrative law as well as the concept of administrative justice, the book briefly discusses the institutional framework of public administration. The second part of the book deals with the normative framework of public administration, starting with a general discussion of administrative tasks and functions and then examining in some detail norms relating to administrative procedure and openness, decision-makers' reasoning processes and the substance of administrative decisions. The next topic is the private law framework provided by the law of tort, contract, and restitution. The third part of the book provides an account of institutions and mechanisms of accountability by which the framework of public administration is policed and enforced: judicial review and appeals by courts and tribunals, bureaucratic and parliamentary oversight, and investigations by ombudsmen. This part ends by considering how these various mechanisms fit into the administrative justice system. The final part of the book explores the functions of administrative law and its impact on administration.
