Book excerpt: The British School of Osteopathy is the oldest and largest teaching institution of osteopathy in the UK. To mark the one hundred years of its history, the book traces its chequered history and the characters involved from when it was simply providing vocational training and awarding its own diploma to it becoming a mature, higher education institution with Taught Degree Awarding Powers. It is a story of incredible achievement despite sometimes almost insurmountable obstacles to its progress.

Book excerpt: Mind & Membrain is a book that not only reveals the 'missing link' between head impacts, mental health issues and early onset dementia but also offers a new approach to mental health diagnosis and treatment. It will interest patients, carers and practitioners across the whole field of mental health. The book begins with the link between head impacts and mental health issues, and early onset dementia. The statistics are well documented and the link is now headline news for sports such as rugby and football. Yet while knocks to the head of all kinds are commonplace and the consequences for mental health are now recognised, the link remains poorly understood. No one so far appears to have grasped the crucial role of the medically neglected dura membrane that lines the skull, envelops the brain and controls the vital irrigation system of the cranium. “Membrain disorder” gives a name to a common but typically undiagnosed condition where the skull is impacted, the dura responds, and – without preventive treatment – the brain and thus the patient’s mental health are impaired, both short and long term. The book, uniquely, explains how membrain disorder can be diagnosed and then successfully treated by a hands-on approach, without drugs or surgery. The book then addresses the current crisis in mental health diagnosis and treatment. Rather than lament the situation, this book offers a solution: an original model for mental health diagnosis. Drawing on complexity theory and biology, the approach generates a practical ‘road map’ guiding a practitioner to discover the dimension of origin of a mental health issue (rather than seek the closest match to the symptoms in the quasi-official doctors’ diagnostical manual, DSM-5). Similar symptoms can have completely different origins, ranging from microscopic molecular imbalances to society-level pressures. With the dimension of origin identified, an effective treatment can be implemented. The book will interest doctors, therapists, manual practitioners and others and give hope to mental health patients, their loved ones and their carers, especially those struggling to find a solution for problems that respond neither to drugs nor talking therapies. Mind & Membrain is written for the lay person and includes personal case histories that bring the topic alive.
Book Synopsis Textbook Osteopathic Medicine by : Johannes Mayer
Download or read book Textbook Osteopathic Medicine written by Johannes Mayer and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, a 60-person team of internationally renowned editors and authors presents a textbook of osteopathic medicine that is oriented towards clinical symptoms. Introductory chapters on history, philosophy and the spread of osteopathy are followed by a presentation of its scientific basis that clearly demonstrates how firmly osteopathy is rooted in science. Further chapters cover osteopathic research, diagnosis and principles of treatment. Two parts on therapeutic strategies in osteopathic practice form the core of this book. The first is divided into regions of the body, the second into clinical specialties that offer opportunities for osteopathic treatment. In both clinical parts, osteopathic therapy is presented in the entirety in which it is actually practiced - without the common but artificial separation of parietal, visceral and craniosacral treatment. First, the clinical symptom is explained from a medical perspective, then the osteopathic perspective and and treatment is presented. Thus, the title is not only suitable for conveying a profound understanding of osteopaths in training, be they doctors or non-medical practitioners, but also as a clinical reference of osteopathic medicine for everyday treatment.

Book Synopsis Osteopathic Medicine by : W. Llewellyn McKone
Download or read book Osteopathic Medicine written by W. Llewellyn McKone and published by Blackwell Publishing. This book was released on 2001-03-05 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first textbook on osteopathic medicine to complement the dominant 'medical' model of education. Drawing from the achievements and ideas of the past as well as present-day practice, it provides an organic yet scientific approach that is uniquely osteopathic. Using the work of its founder, Dr Andrew Taylor Still, and the philosophy of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, McKone shows how true osteopathy is a philosophy, leading to principles and ultimately to a unique form of treatment. This style of thinking brings the philosophy, principles and clinical practice to life for the student and qualified practitioner. Anatomy, physiology, signs and symptoms all merge at the point of treatment. Students and practitioners will find this book invaluable as it will allow them to bring together all their osteopathic training into a coherent osteopathic system of practice. Walter Llewellyn McKone is an author, lecturer and practitioner in osteopathic medicine. This includes the osteopathic areas of health care, sports medicine, manipulative medicine and child care at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (US), American Academy of Psychology, Scientific and Medical Network (UK), Geologists' Association (UK) and is a researcher in Goethian centred medicine.
