Book excerpt: The British general election of 1931 marked the culmination of a period of political and economic crisis, and has long been regarded as a watershed in twentieth-century British history. In the summer of 1931, a struggling Labour government collapsed: its leader, Ramsay MacDonald, stayed on to form a National government supported mainly by Conservatives and Liberals. Within six weeks, the decision to call an election was taken, and in the ensuing contest the Nationals won an overwhelming victory. Thorpe argues that while 1931 changed much, the general trends towards conservative hegemony and two-party politics were little disturbed by the crisis. He traces the background to the events of 1931, and examines their implications in detail.

Book Synopsis The Second Labour Government by : Johnathan Shepherd
Download or read book The Second Labour Government written by Johnathan Shepherd and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain's second Labour government 1929-31: a reappraisal is a timely collection of essays on Labour’s second period in office beset by the international financial crisis of 1929-1931. Contributions from leading historians and younger academics provide fresh insights into a range of topics: the 1929 general election, Labour’s economic policy, consumerism, agricultural questions, the Parliamentary Labour Party’s role and Tory reaction to the 1929-1931 Labor government. Particular attention is also given to relations with the Soviet Union, socialism after 1931, the disaffiliation of the Independent Labour Party, and myths surrounding "1931" in Labor history. This important reassessment offers new and, at times, more positive views of Ramsay MacDonald’s hapless administration during a major turning point in twentieth-century British history. The Second Labour Government:A Reappraisal makes available new scholarship that will appeal to students and teachers of British political and social history. It is essential reading for sixth forms and university courses.

Book Synopsis The Labour Party in Britain and Norway by : David Redvaldsen
Download or read book The Labour Party in Britain and Norway written by David Redvaldsen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of World War I and the Russian Revolution of 1917, the nature, aims and trajectories of the Labour parties of Europe were fundamentally altered and transformed. In this compelling and thoughtful analysis of the Labour parties of Britain and Norway, David Redvaldsen offers an insight into the successes and failures of these two parties as they faced the challenges of the economic and political situation of the interwar era and their relentless pursuit of power. Redvaldsen asks what made each party successful, and by proposing that the Labour Party of Norway was the more successful of the two, draws important conclusions that have resonance for the study of political parties in general. It will thus be of utmost relevance not only to students and researchers of left-wing politics, but also to those interested in the nature of the pursuit of power itself in the crucial interwar period.
Book Synopsis Age of Promises by : David Thackeray
Download or read book Age of Promises written by David Thackeray and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Age of Promises explores the issue of electoral promises in twentieth century Britain - how they were made, how they were understood, and how they evolved across time - through a study of general election manifestos and election addresses. The authors argue that a history of the act of making promises - which is central to the political process, but which has not been sufficiently analysed - illuminates the development of political communication and democratic representation. The twentieth century saw a broad shift away from politics viewed as a discursive process whereby, at elections, it was enough to set out broad principles, with detailed policymaking to follow once in office following reflection and discussion. Over the first part of the century parties increasingly felt required to compile lists of specific policies to offer to voters, which they were then considered to have an obligation to carry out come what may. From 1945 onwards, moreover, there was even more focus on detailed, costed, pledges. We live in an age of growing uncertainty over the authority and status of political promises. In the wake of the 2016 EU referendum controversy erupted over parliamentary sovereignty. Should 'the will of the people' as manifested in the referendum result be supreme, or did MPs owe a primary responsibility to their constituents and/or to the party manifestos on which they had been elected? Age of Promises demonstrates that these debates build on a long history of differing understandings about what status of manifestos and addresses should have in shaping the actions of government.
