Book excerpt: Only recently have space stations become a reality, but Edward Everett Hale was the first person to put that dream into print, with his tales of "The Brick Moon." Written in 1869, the book describes many of the functions modern satellites would fill: communications, navigation, weather observation, and so on. Full of humor and gentle satire, the story is as readable today as it was nearly 140 years ago. Newly designed and typeset in a modern 6-by-9-inch format by Waking Lion Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Brick Moon: And Other Stories The story of The Brick Moon was begun in my dear brother Nathan's working-room in Union College, Schenectady, in the year 1870, when he was professor of the English language there. The account of the first plan of the moon is a sketch, as accurate as was needed, of the old chat and dreams, plans and jokes, of our college days, before he left Cambridge in 1838. As I learned almost everything I know through his care and love and help, directly or indirectly, it is a pleas ure to say this here. The story was published in the Atlantic Monthly, in 1870 and 1871. It was the last story I wrote for that magazine, before assuming the charge of Old and New. Book excerpt: The radical history of space exploration from the Russian Cosmists to Elon Musk Many societies have imagined going to live in space. What they want to do once they get up there - whether conquering the unknown, establishing space "colonies," privatising the moon's resources - reveals more than expected. In this fascinating radical history of space exploration, Fred Scharmen shows that often science and fiction have combined in the imagined dreams of life in outer space, but these visions have real implications for life back on earth. For the Russian Cosmists of the 1890s space was a place to pursue human perfection away from the Earth. For others, such as Wernher Von Braun, it was an engineering task that combined, in the Space Race, the Cold War, and during World War II, with destructive geopolitics. Arthur C. Clark in his speculative books offered an alternative vision of wonder that is indifferent to human interaction. Meanwhile NASA planned and managed the space station like an earthbound corporation. Today, the market has arrived into outer space and exploration is the plaything of superrich technology billionaires, who plan to privatise the mineral wealth for themselves. Are other worlds really possible? Bringing these figures and ideas together reveals a completely different story of our relationship with outer space, as well as the dangers of our current direction of extractive capitalism and colonisation.
