Book excerpt: The future is broken. Garth ‘Nickels’ N’Chalez doesn’t know how he knows the future is broken, but after being invited to enjoy a ten-year stint in Trinity’s officially-unofficial crew of roughnecks and madmen known Universe-wide as Special Services in lieu of paying for … accidental damages to a Tynedale/Fujihara mining facility, there’s no one better to make that assessment. And from his point of view, it couldn’t be more broken. But he’s gonna find out, even if it kills him, because it’s not just the future of the Universe that doesn’t make sense, it’s his whole damn life; being woken up from deep cryosleep –in a spaceship that technically shouldn’t exist- and being told that you and the other fourteen people you were found with napped away the last thirty thousand years of Human expansion across the Universe and then being interred for an entire year so you can be grilled non-stop by an increasingly angry Historical Adjutant who fell just shy of actual torture and then being politely told that since you were the only one to not be killed in a rather fantastic and wildly violent, destructive bid for freedom, you get to pay for the umpty-gazillion dollar facility can kind of make a guy feel like something’s wrong, dreadfully wrong, with everything, everywhere. The fact that he has highly specific amnesia about who he is, what he and the other fourteen were doing in the ship, why they were there, how the ship was constructed, well, that only hammers home the whole ‘everything is broken’ feeling. But Garth Nickels can sure as hell tell you anything you might ever want to know about the A-Team. Or Bugs Bunny. Or Rob Zombie. But nothing historically significant. Well, Garth did his bid in Special Services and made quite a name for himself. Granted, it’s a name he’d prefer stay lost to the darkness across The Cordon where he did horrible, awful things in the Trinity AI’s name, but it’s a name nonetheless. During that time, the thirty-thousand year old Specter discovered that he not only has the same kind of powers and abilities as those who got killed during their escape, his seem to grow in direct correlation to the threat. He has become a man of strength and speed, of violence and mayhem, and he does not like it. But he’s free now, from the haunting Specter he became, free to hunt for something that he suspects might only be a dream: somewhere out there, in the depths of Trinityspace, there is a ship the equal of the one he and his fourteen cryosleep buddies were discovered in. The dreams tell him there are answers within, and he’ll do anything at all to find the answers to who he is, and how the future is broken. Garth’s quest takes him to Latelyspace, the last of the Sovereign Systems, thinking the task ahead would be easy. How wrong can one man be? As it turns out, very. Garth's exploits on the Latelian home world of Hospitalis set in motion a chain of events that will have him labeled Foreign Devil before he's done. It'll take every ounce of self-control, patience and luck one Universe-weary ex-Specter can muster, but will it be enough?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it our brain that produces consciousness? Many people, including most scientists, hold such a belief, founded on a conception of the world that is purely materialistic. This worldview sees the brain as some kind of biological computer. However, modern research shows that our experiences -- especially in childhood and youth -- shape the circuits of our brain, and even stimulate the brain to grow. So to an extent, we shape our own brain just through being alive. And it is by means of our brain that we develop as a person and form our 'self', with all its associated significance and values. In this revealing study of brain, body and consciousness, Arie Bos examines the limitations of the materialist view to explain our human experience. He points to examples where consciousness is not supported by the physical brain, or where consciousness appears to survive beyond death. Exploring the ideas of free will and responsibility, he rejects the view that only physical matter determines our thoughts and actions. In doing so, he opens a door to a wider spiritual reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CYBERNETICS: STATE OF THE ART is the first volume of the book series CON-VERSATIONS. Driven by cybernetic thinking, it engages with pressing questions for architecture, urban planning, design and automated infrastructure; in an age of increasing connectivity, AI and robotization and an evolutionary state of the Anthropocene - perpetuating angst-ridden anxiety as well as excitement and joy of a future, that we will be able to predict with less and less certainty. The book, with a foreword by Omar Khan, discusses cybernetic principles and devices developed in the late 20th century – mainly developed by Ross Ashby and Gordon Pask (second-order cybernetics), to learn from for a future of mutual relationship and conversation between man and machine. The anthology reviews and previews cybernetics as design strategy in computational architecture, urban design and socio-ecological habitats - natural and artificial. It weaves together cybernetic-architectural theories with applications and case studies ranging from regional planning to the smart home. Nine chapters written by an international group of authors from four academic generations are structured into two complimenting parts. While ‘A Concept and a Shape’ focuses on the history and theory of cybernetics, its temporary disappearance and future impact (Raúl Espejo, Michael Hohl, Paul Pangaro, Liss C. Werner), ‘System 5’ – relating to Stafford Beer’s project ‘Cybersyn’ - discusses applications, the role of the individual and human feedback; also with a strong theoretical underpinning (Raoul Bunschoten, Delfina Fantini van Ditmar, Timothy Jachna, Arun Jain, Kristian Kloeckl). CYBERNETICS: STATE OF THE ART invites the reader to enjoy a glimpse into the past to enjoy and discuss a cybernetic future.

Book excerpt: From a beguiling new voice in YA literary sci-fi/contemporary fantasy comes an astonishing novel about a group of mysterious teenagers with the power to change lives... Ever since young adult Milly Bythaway can remember, she’s had to hide who she really is – dumbing down an extraordinary genius in order to blend into the background. 14-year-old Tai Jones has been abandoned by his mother and forced to live as a homeless wanderer on the streets of London, but the appearance of a stray cat helps him realise he has a special gift: he can see thoughts and emotions of others in stunningly beautiful colours. A gift that is both wonderful and awful. When the teenagers are brought together by a mysterious old scientist for their own safety, they are told of a common and forgotten past. One of secret experiments, and a missing family that they yearn to find. But they soon hear of the disappearance of another child, and are faced with an impossible dilemma - to save themselves, they must risk their very sanity. In the end, the children must work together, unleashing the full force of their abilities and powers in an epic battle of the world's greatest minds. The Ingenious and the Colour of Life is J.Y. Sam’s beautiful and heart-rending debut – a story that explores the fragility of human nature, with a dash of science, culture, and the animal/natural world. Listed in 40 book lists in Goodreads (including Best YA Sci-Fi for Both Genders, and YA Book Club) A CAPTIVATING AND INSPIRATIONAL BOOK FOR TEENS, YOUNG ADULTS, AND ADULTS "Exciting, intriguing and gripping, this beautifully written book captures the reader and their imagination from the outset. The descriptions of characters, events and settings enables you to fully visualise and identify with them. A book that will appeal to adults and teenagers which will be remembered long after the reader turns the last page." LoveReading.co.uk "What an absolutely beautiful story and all-around amazing read! This is definitely going to be one of my Top 15 2021 favorites. Yes, it's THAT good. I loved everything about this book! Sci-Fi Fantasy mix with writing so good you are LIVING the words. I love how the author incorporates nature throughout this story." Angel @booknallnight blog "I REALLY liked this book! I LOVED the writing and the backstory of each character, as well as the way the author built the world. (It sort of gave me "Mysterious Benedict Society" vibes, but for an older audience.) I loved the use of different languages and cultures, and the way every animal in this book was a well-written supporting character." Goodreads.com Reviews: "An impressive debut full of a rich tapestry of description and well-rounded, relatable characters. The thematic elements around nature, themes of good and bad and how love prevails make Ingenious stand out from the usual crop and really touch you in a deeper way. After three chapters I was hooked and in tears by the final page. Thank you so much for writing this book, I think everyone should read it. Now I just want to read the next one!!" Romane A, Goodreads Reviewer "I love this book. It is beautifully written but with surprising and sometimes shocking twists and turns. JY Sam has described her characters roundly and sensitively, even those not-so-nice ones." Beth M, Goodreads Reviewer "Never before have I read a debut novel with such poise, elan and finesse! Ms. Sam nails it!! ...the plot line drew me in, and hooked me with its ingenuity (pun intended)." Aniruddha M, Book Blogger aniblogshere "The characters are developed beautifully and I found myself really caring about them; I even shed the odd tear or two." Kirsty R, Amazon Reviewer "There was so much beautiful and lyrical prose... that painted such vivid imagery, and that helped to balance the scientific and medical jargon. One excerpt that I really loved and stood out to me was: 'The melody rolled and rumbled, like storm clouds brewing and gathering at speed - hurtling towards the inevitable.' ...This book really did have everything; joy, action, heartbreak and wit (there were so many humorous moments from Calista too!) and left on such a cliffhanger with still so many questions unanswered; I'm already itching for the sequel!" Kira, Book Blogger kirareadsandwrites "The book is not only intriguing but it's written extremely well with fresh and creative ideas. One more thing I loved was how Ms. Sam made sure the book was inclusive, including characters from multiple ethnicities as well as characters with special needs. The book also contains so many different elements like music and science beautifully tied together in the midst of the story." Radwa A, Goodreads Reviewer "This is a debut??!! What an absolutely beautiful story and all-around amazing read! This is definitely going to be one of my Top 15 2021 favorites. Yes, it's THAT good. I loved everything about this book... with writing so good you are LIVING the words. I love how the author incorporates nature throughout this story." Angela W, Amazon.com reviewer "The author takes her time to introduce the MC's at the beginning of the book, all in separate stories. At the same time, I felt they must come together somehow, and they did. Once it was clear why, the story unfolded rapidly. I think the author has put a great deal of energy into research, as the medical and technical information (no infodump) read solid and believable." Ursula V, Goodreads Reviewer "Full of more twists and turns than I expected and beautifully rendered characters, this was such a fun read despite the subject matter not being exactly light. Sam drew me into the world she created and I can’t wait to see what happens in the rest of the trilogy!" Beth M, Goodreads Reviewer "This is a lovely story, written with empathy." Karen "Intricately and thoughtfully written, this story unfolds with detailed precision, keeping readers guessing from the very first pages... Cinematically written, this captivating mystery blends science fiction and reality to investigate the staggering possibilities that come from genetic alteration." Mary L "This is a brilliant book! The plot thickens with every page turned!" Mary S

Book excerpt: The brain is a fearsomely complex information-processing environment--one that often eludes our ability to understand it. At any given time, the brain is collecting, filtering, and analyzing information and, in response, performing countless intricate processes, some of which are automatic, some voluntary, some conscious, and some unconscious.Cognitive neuroscience is one of the ways we have to understand the workings of our minds. It's the study of the brain biology behind our mental functions: a collection of methods--like brain scanning and computational modeling--combined with a way of looking at psychological phenomena and discovering where, why, and how the brain makes them happen.Want to know more? Mind Hacks is a collection of probes into the moment-by-moment works of the brain. Using cognitive neuroscience, these experiments, tricks, and tips related to vision, motor skills, attention, cognition, subliminal perception, and more throw light on how the human brain works. Each hack examines specific operations of the brain. By seeing how the brain responds, we pick up clues about the architecture and design of the brain, learning a little bit more about how the brain is put together.Mind Hacks begins your exploration of the mind with a look inside the brain itself, using hacks such as "Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Turn On and Off Bits of the Brain" and "Tour the Cortex and the Four Lobes." Also among the 100 hacks in this book, you'll find: Release Eye Fixations for Faster Reactions See Movement When All is Still Feel the Presence and Loss of Attention Detect Sounds on the Margins of Certainty Mold Your Body Schema Test Your Handedness See a Person in Moving Lights Make Events Understandable as Cause-and-Effect Boost Memory by Using Context Understand Detail and the Limits of Attention Steven Johnson, author of "Mind Wide Open" writes in his foreword to the book, "These hacks amaze because they reveal the brain's hidden logic; they shed light on the cheats and shortcuts and latent assumptions our brains make about the world." If you want to know more about what's going on in your head, then Mind Hacks is the key--let yourself play with the interface between you and the world.

Book excerpt: An anthology of feminist cyberfiction and theoretical and critical writings on gender and technoculture. Most writing on cyberculture is dominated by two almost mutually exclusive visions: the heroic image of the male outlaw hacker and the utopian myth of a gender-free cyberworld. Reload offers an alternative picture of cyberspace as a complex and contradictory place where there is oppression as well as liberation. It shows how cyberpunk's revolutionary claims conceal its ultimate conservatism on matters of class, gender, and race. The cyberfeminists writing here view cyberculture as a social experiment with an as-yet-unfulfilled potential to create new identities, relationships, and cultures. The book brings together women's cyberfiction—fiction that explores the relationship between people and virtual technologies—and feminist theoretical and critical investigations of gender and technoculture. From a variety of viewpoints, the writers consider the effects of rapid and profound technological change on culture, in particular both the revolutionary and reactionary effects of cyberculture on women's lives. They also explore the feminist implications of the cyborg, a human-machine hybrid. The writers challenge the conceptual and institutional rifts between high and low culture, which are embedded in the texts and artifacts of cyberculture.
