Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches: The Olean Rock City; Historic Glimpses of Olean, New York; The Bradford Oil District; Historic Glimpses of Bradford, Pennsylvania In the dim past when the morning stars sang together, the Great Conglomerate was long ages in being created, and was re markable as the floor upon which were laid those deposits of incalculable value to man kind - the Coal Measures of the world. By the geologist's hammer and by borings for coal and petroleum, the conglomerate can be traced as it inclines from the surface of the ground at Rock City to a depth at Pitts burgh of three hundred feet, and at Wheel ing, West Virginia, of seven hundred feet, with nine seams of coal resting upon it. It was necessary that there should be an eleva tion and a subsidence for every seam of coal. This rock is the best guide for the coal and oil prospector and he always keeps a record of its depth and thickness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Petroleum and Natural Gas in New York State, Vol. 16: A Paper Read Before the American Institute of Mining Engineers, Duluth Meeting, July, 1887; Revised to June, 1888 The occurrence of oil and gas-springs in the State of New York has been a fact of historical record since 1627, when the existence of the Cuba oil-spring was first recorded. The utilization of natural gas at Fredonia in 1821 attracted the attention of the public to the possibility of obtaining an illuminating gas by digging and drilling into the rocks. No active search was made, however, for oil or gas by the drilling of wells until after the discovery of commercial oil in Pennsylvania in 1859. In 1862 a well was drilled at Bradford, mckean County, Penn sylvania, but a few miles south of the New York state line, to the depth of 200 feet, in search of the oil-sand which had been found at Titusville, Oil City, and at other points in Western Pennsylvania. Immediately subsequent to this, other wells were drilled in search. Of petroleum at a number of points in New York, particularly in the western part of the State. Some explorations have been made, in an unsystematic way, for oil ever since, explorers being much encouraged in their search by the development of the Allegany oil-district in 1879 and 1880. Immediately subsequent to the gen eral utilization of natural gas in Pennsylvania in 1882 and 1883, a new interest was taken in the drilling of exploration wells, more particularly in search of gas. The principal object of this paper is to publish a record of the explorations which have been made up to date for oil and gas in the State. [have not mentioned every well which has been drilled, but only the more important ones with which I am familiar. The record of these wells have a two-fold value, first, to the practical geologist and well-driller, to enable him to deduce conclusions as to the possibility of getting natural gas in special localities, and to aid in further explorations; and second, to the technical geologist. The city of Bradford is situ ated within a few miles of the northern line of Mc Kean county. And about midway between Warren and Potter counties. It stands at the confluence of the East and \vest Branches of the Tuna, a tributary of the Allegheny river. In 1837 Col. Little purchased acres in and around Bradford. And tuilta log house. In 1838 the village was surveyed and named Littleton. In 1851 Daniel Kingsbury purchased a large tract of land from the l'nited States Land com pany. And became most active and untiring in his de termination to develop the resources of the village. And found a city. In 1858 he had the name Littleton changed to Bradford. And with J. K. Haffey and others estab lished the Bradford Miner. To assist in building up the new city. In 1873 the people asked for borough govern ment and the demand was granted. From this time forward the valley was a scene of the wildest activity. Busy men from all parts of the world crowded into the town in search of fortunes, in the form of petroleum. Thousands of derricks grew up. And all kinds of build ings sprung up like reeds. In 1880 there were eight large brick buildings erected. Among them the Riddell House. Over five hundred new dwellings were built and a number of new streets laid out. Since that time the wonderful growth of the city has ceased to become a matter of local history. To-day Bradford is a city of which its citizens are proud. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unwritten History of Braddock's Field (Pennsylvania) Early in January, 1917, a meeting of the business men of Braddock was called to discuss the project of celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the incorporation of the borough, which event occurred June 8, 1867. It soon developed that this year was also the twenty-fifth anniversary of the incorporation of Rankin borough. It was then suggested that as the first white settlement west of the Alleghanies was made on ground now within the borough limits of North Braddock on or about 1742, the celebration should include the one-hundred-seventy-fifth anniversary of this settlement. Accordingly it was resolved to hold a celebration in commemoration of "The Golden Jubilee of Braddock, the Silver Jubilee of Rankin, and the one-hundred-seventy-fifth anniversary of the First White Settlement West of the Alleghanies." The celebration was at once placed in the hands of an Executive Committee, consisting of Chas. E. Dinkey, Chairman; A. P. Roderus, H. B. Miller, Dr. F. K. Whitfield, J. Knox Milligan, H. R. Hunter, L. F. Holtzman, Esq., Wm. J. Dixon, Leo. A. Katz, E. D. Nugent, F. G. Bishoff, W. H. Sullivan, W. J. McBeth. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
