Book excerpt: The Boykin Spaniel is a medium-sized breed of dog that is a member of the Spaniel grouping. The breed is also commonly known as the 'Swamp Poodle, ' the 'LBD' (Little Brown Dog) and simply as the 'Boykin.' The Boykin Spaniel originates from the United States of America. The breed was originally developed for the purpose of hunting turkeys and ducks in the Wateree River Swamp located in South Carolina. However due to their stamina in hot weather and eagerness to hunt, the Boykin Spaniel was quickly used for dove hunts and to hunt pheasants and other larger game. The Boykin Spaniel is actually the state dog of South Carolina. The Boykin Spaniel is slightly larger than the English Cocker Spaniel but has a much heavier body. The breed has no standard coat type or coloration due to the breed recent background. It is not uncommon for the Boykin Spaniel's coat to be curly in a similar style to the American Water Spaniel's coat, fine and straight like a Field Spaniel's coat and shorter and straighter like a Labrador Retriever's coat. As a whole, the Boykin Spaniel is known to be a friendly, sociable and loyal breed that makes it a perfect family pet. It is important to note that the Boykin Spaniel is a highly energetic breed. If it is not exercised properly it is highly likely that a Boykin Spaniel will develop destructive behaviors, due to boredom and having an abundance of excess energy. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Boykin Spaniel's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Boykin Spaniel, raising your Boykin Spaniel from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Boykin Spaniel: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Boykin Spaniel," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Boykin Spaniel owner. This guide includes sections on caring for a puppy, breeding, health care, training, the basic cost of owning an Boykin Spaniel and much more. This book is the second edition - the first edition was published by 'Dog Care Professionals.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Anne Rivers Siddons comes a bittersweet and finely wrought story of friendship, family, and Charleston society. At twelve, Emily Parmenter knows alone all too well. Left mostly to herself after her beautiful young mother disappeared and her beloved older brother died, Emily is keenly aware of yearning and loss. Rather than be consumed by sadness, she has built a life around the faded plantation where her remote father and hunting-obsessed brothers raise the legendary Lowcountry Boykin hunting spaniels. It is a meager, narrow, masculine world, but to Emily it has magic: the storied deep-sea dolphins who come regularly to play in Sweetwater Creek; her extraordinary bond with the beautiful dogs she trains; her almost mystic communion with her own spaniel, Elvis; the dreaming old Lowcountry itself. Emily hides from the dreaded world here. It is enough. And then comes Lulu Foxworth, troubled daughter of a truly grand plantation, who has run away from her hectic Charleston debutante season to spend a healing summer with the quiet marshes and river, and the life-giving dogs. Where Emily's father sees their guest as an entrée to a society he thought forever out of reach, Emily is at once threatened and mystified. Lulu has a powerful enchantment of her own, and this, along with the dark, crippling secret she brings with her, will inevitably blow Emily's magical water world apart and let the real one in—but at a terrible price. Poignant and emotionally compelling, Sweetwater Creek draws you into the luminous landscape of the Lowcountry, with characters that will linger long after you've turned the last page.

Book excerpt: More than just a hunting dog, the Boykin Spaniel, a breed that harkens back to a sire named Dumpy in the 1920s, has become the official South Carolina state dog. How this little brown dog squirmed its way not only into the hearts of over 12,000 owners, but into political debate, is what intrigued authors Creel and Kelley. Together they have created a comprehensive history that documents the first appearance of the breed, as well as the formation of the Boykin Spaniel Society that established a set of standards for breeding and judging. Also included in this book are chapters depicting the dog in art and literature, as well as advice on naming practices, providing care, field training, and a list of breeders, competitions and champions.

They are always happy to see us. They comfort us in our times of need. They also eat our shoes, stain our carpets, and embarrass us in front of our guests. Dog owners everywhere have found their outlet in Dog Shaming, where they can confess their dogs' biggest (and often grossest!) sins, which turn out to be recognizably universal—complete with snapshots of ridiculously cute but shamed pups who don't seem capable of humping humans, pooping on pillows, or snagging steak straight from a grill. So share in the shaming and laugh through your frustration as Dog Shaming reminds us that unconditional love goes both ways.

Book excerpt: The Boykin Spaniel, once relegated solely to South Carolina (and in fact, the official dog of the state!), is growing in popularity nationwide as a breed that's as loyal and lovable as it is intelligent and trainable. These affable dogs are easily identifiable by their luscious brown locks and honey-gold eyes, with webbed toes that make them excellent swimming partners. Originally bred in South Carolina to hunt and retrieve among the states many swamps and lakes, Boykin Spaniels have recently found themselves out of the swamp and in suburban backyards, edging ever closer to the ubiquity of their Cocker Spaniel and Springer Spaniel peers.

Book excerpt: An accessible and richly illustrated introduction to the natural history of dogs—from evolution, anatomy, cognition, and behavior to the relationship between dogs and humans As one of the oldest domesticated species, selectively bred over millennia to possess specific behaviors and physical characteristics, the dog enjoys a unique relationship with humans. More than any other animal, dogs are attuned to human behavior and emotions, and accordingly play a range of roles in society, from police and military work to sensory and emotional support. Selective breeding has led to the development of more than three hundred breeds that, despite vast differences, still belong to a single species, Canis familiaris. The Dog is an accessible, richly illustrated, and comprehensive introduction to the fascinating natural history and scientific understanding of this beloved species. Ádám Miklósi, a leading authority on dogs, provides an appealing overview of dogs' evolution and ecology; anatomy and biology; behavior and society; sensing, thinking, and personality; and connections to humans. Illustrated with some 250 color photographs, The Dog begins with an introductory overview followed by an exploration of the dog's prehistoric origins, including current research about where and when canine domestication first began. The book proceeds to examine dogs' biology and behavior, paying particular attention to the physiological and psychological aspects of the ways dogs see, hear, and smell, and how they communicate with other dogs and with humans. The book also describes how dogs learn about their physical and social environments and the ways they form attachments to humans. The book ends with a section showcasing a select number of dog breeds to illustrate their amazing physical variety. Beautifully designed and filled with surprising facts and insights, this book will delight anyone who loves dogs and wants to understand them better.
