Book excerpt: Moonworts, or ferns belonging to the genus Botrychium, are the largest group of rare ferns in Alberta. This report synthesizes the data collected in a project to identify potential threats to these species and their habitats in Alberta. The objectives of the project were to revisit known populations of rare Botrychium species, search for new populations, document the characteristics of their habitats, and evaluate potential threats to their security. The report begins with a review of the research methods used, a summary of moonwort habitat characteristics & conservation strategies, and presents management recommendations for eight general regions that were visited during the 2001 field season. Species of concern in each region are identified.

Book Synopsis Spores of the Pteridophyta by : Alice F. Tryon
Download or read book Spores of the Pteridophyta written by Alice F. Tryon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes a unique, encyclopedic reference work that systematizes and categorizes for the first time in such comprehensive fashion all known fern spores. The dominant feature of the work are the over 350 plates of electron micrographs showing the morphological characteristics of typical representatives of each spore type. The purpose of the book is to provide a complete survey of the available data on the fine structure and composition, development, and evolu- tionary significance of different types of spore walls, which have proven resistant to fossilization throughout geological ages. The classification system developed by the authors as the result of many years of research will be a point of reference, if not "the" systematic basis, for all future publication on the subject. The book will be of great interest to all botanists and evolutionary biologists working with spores and/or ferns, but it will also be of major importance to paleobotanists, palynologists, stratigraphers, and exploration geologists, since the focus of this treatise is on spores as highly adapted and longlived reproductive forms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition more than thirty years ago, The Flora of Alberta has become the standard guide for naturalists, botanists, and all those interested in the wildlife of the province. It provides an inventory of 1775 known vascular plant species- ferns, conifers, and flowering plants - that are native to Alberta, or if non-native, that have become established and grow wild int he province. All are grouped according to genus and family, with descriptions of species, genera, and families. Keys are provided to allow for the identification of all the known species, along with information on habitats in which species generally occur. The text for each species includes the chromosome number and indicates the geographical distribution in North America. Also included are 1158 provincial distribution maps, showing the locations of native species, and two specially prepared maps of the province - one indicating the distribution of major soil groups, the other distribution of major vegetation types. In the years since its initial publication The Flora of Alberta has been revised, updated, and considerably expanded while retaining the original format and purpose that have made it indispensable to a wide range of readers.
Book Synopsis The Ecoregions of Saskatchewan by : G. A. Padbury
Download or read book The Ecoregions of Saskatchewan written by G. A. Padbury and published by University of Regina Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the ecoregions of Saskatchewan, following a hierarchical framework for terrestrial ecosystems in Canada. The introduction reviews ecological land classification and the various interrelated factors that are involved in the development of ecosystems: geology, water, climate, vegetation, soils, wildlife, and human impacts. The main section describes the province within the context of the four ecozones and 11 ecoregions that were identified in the framework. For each ecoregion, the book provides a description of the physical setting, such as geology & climate, as well as the biological features that have developed in response to this physical environment. The impact of human activities on the ecology of the area concludes each of these descriptions. Appendices include lists of animal & plant species found in Saskatchewan and a glossary.
