Book Synopsis The Bookmaker by : Michael J. Agovino
Download or read book The Bookmaker written by Michael J. Agovino and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-06 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marking the debut of a gifted new writer, The Bookmaker teems with humanity, empathy, humor, and insight. At the heart of Michael J. Agovino's powerful, layered memoir is his family's struggle for success in 1970s, '80s, and '90s New York City—and his father's gambling, which brought them to exhilarating highs and crushing lows. He vividly brings to life the Bronx, a place of texture and nuance, of resignation but also of triumph. The son of a buttoned-up union man who moonlighted as a gentleman bookmaker and gambler, Agovino grew up in the Bronx's Co-op City, the largest and most ambitious state-sponsored housing development in U.S. history. When it opened, it landed on the front page of The New York Times and in Time magazine, which described it as "relentlessly ugly." Agovino's Italian American father was determined not to let his modest income and lack of a college education define him, and was dogged in his pursuit of the finer things in life. When the point spreads were on his side, he brought his family to places he only dreamed about in his favorite books and films: the Uffizi, the Tate, the Rijksmuseum; St. Peter's, Chartres, Teotihuacán. With bad luck came shouting matches, unpaid bills, and eviction notices. The Bookmaker is both a bold, loving portrait of a family and their metropolis and an intimate look into some of the most turbulent decades of New York City. In elegant and soaring prose, it transcends the personal to illuminate the ways in which class distinctions shaped America in the last half of the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis The Ten Equations That Rule the World by : David Sumpter
Download or read book The Ten Equations That Rule the World written by David Sumpter and published by Flatiron Books. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a secret formula for getting rich? For going viral? For deciding how long to stick with your current job, Netflix series, or even relationship? This book is all about the equations that make our world go round. Ten of them, in fact. They are integral to everything from investment banking to betting companies and social media giants. And they can help you to increase your chance of success, guard against financial loss, live more healthfully, and see through scaremongering. They are known by only the privileged few - until now. With wit and clarity, mathematician David Sumpter shows that it isn't the technical details that make these formulas so successful. It is the way they allow mathematicians to view problems from a different angle - a way of seeing the world that anyone can learn. Empowering and illuminating, The Ten Equations shows how math really can change your life.

Book Synopsis On-course horserace betting by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Culture, Media and Sport Committee
Download or read book On-course horserace betting written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Culture, Media and Sport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-01-23 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-course horserace bookmaking has undergone substantial regulatory reform, since the enactment of the Gambling Act 2005 (PGA 2005, Chp.19, ISBN 9780105419051). In particular the reform of allocating on-course horserace bookmakers' pitches (the physical position each bookmaker occupies on the racecourse). This issue has been the subject of a dispute, particularly since a certain number of bookmakers have bought what they believe is an existing "tenure" in perpetuity on a bookmakers' list. The Gambling Act also removed the requirement of horse racecourses to obtain a certificate of approval in order to operate. This also removed the "five times rule", which capped the charge to a bookmaker for admission to an enclosure at five times the amount of the highest charge to members of the public for admission to that enclosure, a development the Committee approves. With the removal of certificates of approval by the Act, this also removed the mechanism which ensured that racecourses observed bookmakers' lists (where bookmakers that attend the racecourse are entitled to pick their pitch position in accordance with their respective list position). The Gambling Act has enabled racecourses and bookmakers to enter into commercial arrangements for the pricing and allocation of pitch positions. The Committee though does welcome the efforts of bookmakers and racecourses to agree new arrangements for the administration and regulation of on-course betting and the establishment of the new working party to consider the issue of pitch positions. The Committee believes that if racecourses wish to move to a fully commercial relationship for the allocation and pricing of pitch positions, compensation should be made available for those who purchased a list position under the system of certificate of approval. If the racecourses and bookmakers cannot reach a commercial arrangement over pitches, the Committee believes the system of bookmakers' lists under the certificate of approval should be reimposed.
